Seems like Calgary are little babies when I comes to trading with the leafs but now that they seem to be in full rebuild. How about Naz back with some retention.

There is your rockstar 3C. Would rather even take what’s left of his full contract than give Lindholm 7 x 7+.

As much as 34 year old in October Kadri seems like a decent option, how does it look at age 35, 36, 37 and 38?

Don't know.

That's nice. Holmberg also averaged about 10 ES min a game to do that forcing Kampf into a higher role eventually landing Domi at the 3C where he needed sheltering

and i don't know where it's should be an issu to use one of best defensive C in a lot of defensive situation?

And if it's doesn't, you can still fix it with exemple a Gourde, Dvorak, granlund, geekie at TDL...

That's a great plan, but who? Who's going to be significantly better than Kampf offensively AND also be good enough defensively to lead a PK?

Elias Lindholm is the only UFA that fits.
Personally I'd make a few changes upfront on the PK both personnel wise and systems to focus on speed to reduce time and space. Right now Marner and Kampf are both positional, passive defenders.

Easiest 1for1 swap is Monahan. You upgrade talent substantially and he PKs

We know it's an issue, it was this season. Kampfs being overplayed for his abilities and you can't create a shutdown 4c line with Reaves, they just don't play safe minutes. So you're sprinkling him around the lineup for some defensive presence. Your third line is also looking for sheltering with the youth. Forcing Matthews and Tavares to challenging matchups like we saw this year. Sure they can and did handle it, but it's not the leverage you want.

I like Gourde as an option, but I wouldn't wait until the TDL to fill that hole

You realize our pk was terrible last year with Kampf being a significant part of it right? Holmberg can PK. Dewar can PK if he’s back. Sign some guys. Kampf comes nowhere close to justifying his cost for what he brings.

Our PK suffered from bad goalies and bad defensemen.

You underestimate the value of a guy who can successfully absorb all of the team's toughest minutes and defensive responsibilities. Guys like Holmberg and Dewar will get eaten up.

1-Upgrade your D and get d involve, that will create space for your foward you will have better scoring chance and making life easier for everybody.

2- We know how Keefe was using their player, we don't have any kind of idea of how Berube will use them.

3- Option at 3C are pretty thin this off-season and i don't see real better option than holmberg who will not cost at least 4 to 5M for a 3C... and better a 3C or top 4 dman, i would use the money for top 4 d.

Okay, let’s have some fun. You’re the AGM and Tre hands you a note book with the following skeleton and tell you to build a balanced lineup capable of contending. What is your plan?

X - Matthews - X
X - X - Nylander
X - Tavares - X
X - X - X

Rielly - X
X - X
McCabe - Benoit

X
Woll

With this he leaves you $40,633,333 for 13 players. An average of $3,125,641 per position.

Potential youth:
Bobby McMann -> 1.35M ( I know he’s 28 lol)
Pontus Holmberg -> 800,000
Easton Cowan -> 904,667
Fraser Minten -> 816,667
Nikita Grebyonkin -> 875,000

Keep or remove/trade? (If trade, factor in return)
Jarnkrok -> 2.1M
Kampf -> 2.4M
Reaves -> 1.35M
Marner -> 10.9M

UFA/RFA Potential re-signings?
Dewar
Gregor
Bertuzzi
Domi
Liljegren
Brodie
Giordano
Edmundson
Lyubushkin
Jones
Samsonov
Robertson

** FYI if Cowan, Minten, Holmberg & McMann are all on your team, then you have $4.084M per player based on 9 remaining spots. If you still fill in a couple more players at 4th line appropriate salaries from there it would go up even more.
GOALIE
Saros at all costs, try for Ullmark. If forced, settle for one of these tandem goalies with Woll and pucker up one more year.

DEFENSE
Ideal end state is Benny and McCabe on L3, with three new players to round out the top 4 with Rielly. Probably won't get there just yet, but the money should go to trying to get as close as possible - might end up with McCabe on L2 and Lily or a cheap Eddy on L3.

FORWARD
Line 1 - Matty
Line 2 - Willy
Line 3 - JT
Line 4 - Kampf
Build out lines for each of these players with whatever is left. Most of the pieces are in house - McMann, Holm, Cowan, Reavo, Domi, Dewar, Bert if cheap, Jarn if we have to.

If Marner can't be moved try and grab the best player we can for the future program now and makeshift everything else until next season. With the right tweaks we could go a bit deeper.

Personally I'd make a few changes upfront on the PK both personnel wise and systems to focus on speed to reduce time and space. Right now Marner and Kampf are both positional, passive defenders.

That’s a system change, and something Kampf would excel at.

Monahan needs offensive opportunities to score. He won’t do that in Kampf’s role.

He does PK, but he sure can’t be your go-to option.

I think you're getting it. You're not bringing in a defensive specialist to center your fighter. You're upgrading your 3C, dropping Holmberg to 4C and updating the way we defend

One of the issues we have is that Holmberg and Kampf are both 4Cs, so we need to upgrade that. It's tough to keep both and I'd rather the younger, cheaper player with more upside

Kamps isn't great with pressuring, but he is good with contain D where he can use his anticipation and positioning over speed and pressure

How much do you think Monahan will get on his next contract just for fun?

That's nice you don't, but we've actually tried both Kampf and Holmberg as 3C with very little success.

We also need to expand our thinking beyond signings this summer and move some pieces in/out via trade.

4.25/yr is my guess

Someone still has to take on the responsibilities that Kampf vacates. Holmberg is not able to do that. Tavares cannot do that. Matthews actually could, but that would seriously reduce his offensive opportunities. It’s probably not worth replacing Kampf for an added 15-20 points, when you’re likely just taking them away from Matthews.

You share it. It didn't fall all on Kampf last year, a lot fell to Tavares because of how they were forced to look for a 3C. Holmberg saw time on wing with our 4th line and top lines while Domi was being sheltered as our 3C.

That Domi sheltering forced strain on the other lines for usage in regular season. In playoffs you saw the limitations of Kampf and Holmberg, both were okay, but much of the same.

So you have an opportunity to swap Holm for Kampf, lose a little on D abilities then upgrade 3C

We tries Holmberg/ Kampf with a system where d are not involve at all in the offensive end and the foward need to create everything in the offensive end. Upgrade the D and get D involving in the offensive game and that will help in a lot of thing.

4,25M in short term deal with salary cap goes up and a lot of team with cap space, you're extremely optimist if you hope to get monahan at this salary. At this salary, it would a long term deal like 6-7 years with a player with a lot of injury issues. It's pretty risky

This is the first year our D has been this passive and even then there was a shift post deadline to less movement The prior two with Kampf we saw much more engagement from the backend and it didn't change much

4.25 x 3 is my guess throw an extra 500k for each year less. So about a mill more on a 1 yr deal

The last 5 season under keefe D had been passive and never been really involve in the offensive game except when they was trailing late and need absolutly a goal.., it was not the 1st season at all.

Like i said you're extremely optimist with Monahan and i would be extremely surprise to see him sign as low

No on Keefe and the system but I do agree we need more activation and for away from it last year

If Monogram gets too pricey you look at trade options. It's not him or bust

I disagree on the first part. I think both players know there is more money and term out there with another most likely than if they stay but until it’s explored they can’t quantify by how much. The Leafs offer will not be the best they get, of that I’m confident. To me all going to July 1st says is that they want to know all their options and then they can weigh how much staying is worth to them.

I suspect after some exploration, we'll see both extended in Toronto by July 1st at the latest .

GMs are going to prefer dealing with guys they know then the black box of free agency, and Tre is known for liking to extend his vets and the media smoke is that talks with both have already been underway

Shared or not, it still impacts the offensive contributions of the players who are now doing defensive work. Tavares gets more defensive ice time, that means he gets less offensive ice time.

You think Kampf's replacement is going to score more than him by taking Kampf's ice time, but that isn't going to happen. The ice time needed to score won't come out of Kampf's old allotment, but from Matthews and Tavares.

We're going to downgrade out defensive play without upgrading (and probably downgrading) the offensive play.

That Domi sheltering forced strain on the other lines for usage in regular season. In playoffs you saw the limitations of Kampf and Holmberg, both were okay, but much of the same.

Holmberg is not close to as good as Kampf defensively, and we won't score more in the same role.

I'm all for upgrading, but roles and responsibilities need to be accounted for. The best player isn't necessarily the best player for a specific role.
