Wearing your team's jersey to a game not involving your team

Going to see your team play live is really the only acceptable time to wear a jersey for an adult. So this is a faux pas to me.
While I personally stopped wearing jerseys I am not going to pretend that I'm offended or feel the need to ridicule any adult who wears a jerseys outside or to a hockey game. There is a whole subculture geared towards jersey heads. It's not my style but to each their own. I'd be busy 24/7 if I worried about what other people wear when they leave their house, and we aren't even talking jerseys (flat brimmed hats, camo shirts with cut of sleeves, etc.) . Everyone is different and everyone enjoys different things. So "acceptability" doesn't even apply here.

That being said, wear whatever you please to whatever you and wherever you want. I've seen people in football and soccer jerseys at hockey games. More power to them

For real. Every other situation makes me think you play fantasy football and go to Buffalo Wild Wings every Sunday

I really don't get the big issue.

Especially if it's an obscure team, like seeing an Arizona jersey in Canada. Or an old Hartford Whalers jersey, etc.

I've done it before, worn an Avalanche and a Philly jersey to games where neither team were playing.

personally i would never do it because i don't think it's cool, that said i do not care one bit if someone else is going to do it.

i am a metal fan and have never heard that it was 'faux pas' to wear the tshirt of the band playing, very odd. i always wear a black tshirt to every concert but i always wear one from a different band then the one playing.

SWEATER not jersey.

I've seen this thread at least five times on this board over the years and I'll never understand why so many people care about what people wear.

So I was talking with my best friend and we got into this debate of whether or not it is acceptable to wear your NHL team's jersey to a game that doesn't involve your team.

Argument 1: Yes, it is acceptable, you are going to a hockey game, it's cool to see different jerseys especially unique ones that you don't just see people on the street wearing regularly.

Argument 2: No, under no circumstances should you wear your jersey to a game that doesn't involve your team, it's just weird.

So I throw this out to the HF community, is it acceptable to wear your team's jersey to a game not involving your team?

As a Hurricanes fan, at a home game all I see are random NHL jerseys that are not from either team, so in my mind it must be acceptable to wear ours on the unlikely chance I go to see two other teams play...

Anytime I see someone do this, I think very little of them. Is there any way to try and get anymore attention. Like come on.

Can someone explain why it's dumb? Because the team isn't playing? So...unless you are in line of sight of your team's players, it's dumb? Why get a personalized jersey then? Do you take off your jersey to go get a beer during intermission? Everyone wearing a jersey is looking for attention, that's the whole point of sports apparel.

I mean really, wearing a jersey of a team you don't play for is inherently "dumb", regardless of where you are. When did the NHL become so popular that people who support their team out of town are looked down upon?

I think there are a few exceptions.
Wearing a jr jersey. IE: Oil Kings jersey to an Oilers game. Wearing an AHL affiliate jersey of the home team.
Wearing a team canada or other national team jersey, especially if it is of a player on your team.

There are some exceptions that do not bother me:
Foreigners come with their local teams jersey
Fans wearing a country jersey.
Fans rocking a vintage jersey.

Otherwise, if it's not for the home or away team, it comes off as "LOOK AT ME, I'M A FAN OF _____".

*edit*
Wait, people have a problem with fans wearing their team's sweaters?
I don't think I've ever heard that criticism.

I wore my Blues Tarasenko third jersey to a Grand Rpaids Griffins vs Chicago Wolves playoff game last year. Got a lot of nice compliments and even questions about certain prospects in the concession lines.

As far as I'm concerned, wearing any hockey jersey at any hockey game is perfectly fine with the caveat that going to another team's barn and wearing a jersey of a rival of that team that's not playing might not be a good idea (i.e. - wearing a Hawks jersey in St. Louis, a Kings jersey in Anaheim, a Habs jersey in Toronto, etc.). Beyond that, it's fine, and I don't understand why anyone would care one way or the other. I personally enjoy seeing a variety of jerseys as well, especially older ones or minor league/junior jerseys as well.

I mean, do you really put that much thought into what people are wearing?

If you wear a rival jersey while the rival isn't playing, you are asking for it.

If you wear a random jersey, you may be doing it as a joke or just as an oblivious casual fan.

If you wear an NBA/MLB/NFL jersey that is not one of the hometown teams, you're a dope and I hate you. (this goes vice versa for all sports)
