Wearing your team's jersey to a game not involving your team

It is weird. Exception being, as others have stated, when the jersey has name of a player from the game you're attending.

Like wearing a Strome Islanders jersey to an Edmonton game.

When I go to hockey in Cardiff (in the UK) it’s roughly a 50/50 split between wearing Cardiff Devils/their opponents jerseys and wearing various NHL jerseys, but I guess that’s quite different as none of the NHL teams are rivals.

At football (soccer) games over here doing this is a massive no no, you’ll probably get the holy hell beaten out of you at certain matches. But hockey fans seem an altogether more decent bunch.

Unless it's a rival to the home team it doesn't bug me so much, I personally wouldn't do it, but that's me. Wearing a Blackhawks jersey at the Scottrade when it's a Blues/Stars game makes one look like a jerk.

That said, seeing a early 90s (pre-all star game Stars sweaters) Modano jersey? Awesome.

You get bonus points if you're wearing a name and number on the back of a former/current player of one of the teams.

Yes 100% acceptable...... except if you wear the jersey of a rival of the home team when that rival isn't playing. Then you're just looking for negative attention.

My wife and I are trying to see one of our teams play in every NHL arena. She's a Flyers fan. And when we go to each arena, we wear our team's jersey regardless of who is playing that night so we can take a photo of ourselves at the arena and put it on a scrapbook she is making.

And yes, people have said to us "Well why are you wearing a jersey if the Devils/Flyers aren't playing here tonight?" Speaking of getting negative attention like I did above, you can imagine the words she got when she wore a Flyers jersey to Devils vs Penguins in Pittsburgh. But she only did it so that we could get our photos, so it wasn't done to get attention.

No, it's weird.

Unless the player on the team plays on the team you're watching and it's an older jersey of his, that's sort of acceptable because at least that player is at the game, but if it's like a Eichel Jersey at a Penguins vs Devils game, dude, just wear a hoodie or a t-shirt and don't be a weirdo.

It should be actively encouraged, but if you're wearing the home team's rival jersey, you should accept the consequences and must understand that you will get chirped.

I mean, know your audience. I get the whole you want to take pics with your teams jerseys in arenas thing, but you can also take it off, complaining about anyone saying anything is just, well, you're wearing a jersey of a hated rival team in the other team's barn, that's a no no in most forms of anything in that type of situation.

That's like going to your rival company, letting them know you are from a rival company, and just casually hanging out in their lunch room and expecting people to accept you.

People pay good money to watch hockey games... they could wear a shirt that says "I hate hockey" and sure it'd look dumb but it's their own choice.

I wore my sundin jersey to a sense flyers playoff game back in the day. Great conversation starter. Both fan bases hated me and I'd do it all over again.

Great point. It's a huge conversation starter and you meet a lot of nice people who love talking hockey. For my wife and I, people seem to be taken aback when they see a Flyers and Devils fan together, and they tend to ask how we make it work.

One thing I'll also mention is that, when we went down for a Florida Panthers game against Philly, I think we counted 22 different NHL team jerseys being worn. Obviously the Miami area has a lot of transplants so this was understandable. I saw 4 other people in Devils jerseys and it was like we were instantly good friends.

I find this to be the case at games in Nottingham too. Part of it I think is that a lot of people that go are hockey or NHL fans first off and just go down to be able to watch the sport live.

i have to say I'm tempted to wear a Nottingham jersey to the games i'm going to in NY at the start of next month, just because it would be a conversation starter.

Absolute oddball behaviour, up there with people who wear half and half jerseys or people who get names of players on jerseys they didn't wear, such as this:

Wearing it really screams 'casual fan'.

There is no such thing as "casual fan" since those two words contradict each other.
Either you're a fan and you're really following every game of your team or you're casual and be like "they're playing tonight? whatever. maybe i'll watch".

What if I wear a jersey of a team that doesn't exist anymore... Can I rock my Kovalchuk Thrashers jersey while attending an NHL game.

Yes...I frequently go this route (Nords or Whalers) when I go to games without a rooting interest.

Under no circumstance would I wear any of my Pens jerseys to a neutral game.

You see scores of people wearing tshirts of the band who'se concert they are attending while they are at that bands concert.

Source: My wife and I have been to hundreds of metal shows

The rules at metal shows have always been slightly more lax about this sort of thing (and I think there's less of this self-consciousness among metal fans anyway) but it's pretty established.

Source: I have seen hundreds of shows ranging all genres, and also used to work in a very prominent Pittsburgh venue.

My girlfriend got free tickets to the Devils home opener against the Avalanche and I was completely torn between my Nordiques shirt and my Rockies one.
