When have lineups ever stayed static? The opening night lines will look totally different by game 20.
I don't think anyone is suggesting that we'll have the same lineup all season, but it's unlikely they paid Ritchie that much to start him on the 4th line.

That was always extremely optimistic. Based on his AHL play last season, he was simply not NHL-ready. I never had him pencilled into the lineup and it's clear he needs more development on the defensive side of the puck, skating (and staying on his feet), and getting stronger.

I think most qualified observers felt that way too. But a lot of people on here had him penciled is as a can't miss top six. Now it seems like there's a bit of shine off the kid. Which by no means is me saying he's a bust, just calling out that I think a lot of people in here were expecting more.

Honestly this was the best I've seen Robertson play at a higher than AHL level TBH. He was in on the forecheck, strong on his feet (for a change), and he made a lot of nice plays in tight quarters to keep the plays alive. Ya sure it would have been nice to see him pot 1 or 2 in the games he played, but he's a young buck. He was never making this roster IMO.

AHL is where he belongs now. I never question Nick's skill level, but I did have some doubts on his ability to play hard on the puck and overall his ability to protect the puck. That was easily the best I've seen him do in his pro career IMO.

He still needs to work on being a bit more patient. He was skilled enough to do it all in Junior and to a degree the AHL. But he really needs to utilize his linemates better at the next level. I thought he got progressively better in that aspect as his camp went on.

He'll be back. Not a worry

Why is it a trash opinion? I don't think Ritchie is a particularly good player and don't think he brings much of a complementary element to either of the top-six lines.

He's not fast, so he doesn't really help on the defensive side of the puck or on the forecheck. That also impedes his transition ability. He's really more of a puck-protection guy who scores from distance. That's not exactly what you want when you have Matthews on your line and he's too slow to put next to Tavares.

I didn't like the signing to begin with and haven't really seen much to be convinced otherwise.

Thornton was fine with Marner/Matthews, it isn't like they are rush players, they do their best work when the play gets slowed down a little.

I really think Ritchie's job is to crash the net, and although I was hesitant of the signing, just from the super limited viewing and giving it more of a thought, if he can do that it may be a really good fit. Offensively they don't need someone to distribute the puck to, they need someone to cause chaos.

It may crash and burn, but it gives Marner and Matthews a good second option, a big body in front to give a backdoor pass to or someone to stand in front for the screen.

It kind of feels like Groundhog Day the amount of times we’ve “improved on paper” in the off season.

All we've done is plug holes on the roster. With little or no cap space left I'm not getting my hopes up we will some how become a Stanley Cup contender.

Robertson is barley 20 right call to send him down to focus on meaningful playing time and focus on rounding out his development.

I can see him potentially threatening to challenge for a spot nearer the TDL if all goes well.

Curious to see what happens with the remaining cuts

Pretty disappointing news about Robertson today.

The decision to send him down was easy for Keefe/Dubas.

See you next year kid.

Otto

Ps- smarten up!

Robertson is 20. If not for the weird COVID rules, this would be the first season he would be eligible for the AHL.

Just to put into context how young he is.

No real surprises there. SDA looked great - Gusev wasn't bad, but there is just a massive logjam of forwards in this organization right now.
