I'm thinking the final roster spots are going to come down to:

Liljegren vs. Sandin
Engvall vs. Brooks vs. Ho-Sang vs. a waiver-exempt player (Semyonov/Liljegren/Sandin)

If Matthews wrist is okay, my guess is that both Sandin & Liljegren take the final spots; then they'll just rotate guys in & out regularly, getting guys 'reps' or looks in the lineup while also keeping internal competition high. Giving the last spot to someone who isn't waiver-exempt, planning to keep them, would handcuff them from doing this. There's nothing clear-cut, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

It'd help them accrue some cap savings too (by carrying a 20-man roster on certain days).

how is Foligno equal to Bunting? Foligno was not good, and he only played 7 games. If Bunting doesn't have a much bigger impact it would be a shock

I hope he does, and expect he will have a bigger impact, but fact remains he's a 26 year old with exactly 26 games of NHL experience. I'd like to truly see what we have first.

Robertson has some NHL ability and shot but he can't fall down in every single board or corner battle. deservedly sent down. he does have big league skill but it will take some adjustment of his pro game to compensate for his weaknesses. at 20 there is still upside there obviously.

I will say though that for a franchise that produces little above average talent outside of the 1st round, it's definitely a bit disappointing that the ostensible best forward prospect can't even get in the lineup ahead of a revolving door of reclamation projects.

Ouch for Robertson. Not even close. Lots of people were talking about him being a lock during the offseason. Hopefully he can turn things around with the Marlies.

I don't think Sandin vs Liljegren is really a competition. I'm normally hesitant to boost prospects in terms of NHL play, but Sandin has looked very good to me and I wouldn't be surprised if he's already the Leafs 4th best d-man. No way Liljegren beats him out

Engvall vs Brooks is interesting, because Dubas seems to really like Engvall historically and Keefe doesn't seem to be a fan based on how much he's criticized him. Brooks has more scoring upside imo but Engvall is more proven and is reliable defensively and as a PK guy. Both were very good last night as well.

Ho-Sang I think is definitely destined for the Marlies and I don't think he really minds that much which works in the Leafs favour. There will always be chances to call him up during the year.

It's also possible they could waive both of them if they happen to want to accrue cap space. Hope that at least one doesn't get claimed and there's the choice made for them. Worst case scenario they lose both and just use Semyonov, Ho-Sang or Liljegren instead.

Could *maybe* say it's early to cut Robertson. Nothing surprising there IMO.

Ya he was never going to make it purely for roster spot purposes. No sense keeping him over someone who has to go through waivers especially when he hasn't shown he's ready to be an impact player yet.

That was always extremely optimistic. Based on his AHL play last season, he was simply not NHL-ready. I never had him pencilled into the lineup and it's clear he needs more development on the defensive side of the puck, skating (and staying on his feet), and getting stronger.

He needs to work on his skating. Looks like Stajan out there.

Bunting Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Kampf Kase
Ritchie Spezza Simmonds

Engvall HoSang Brooks Gabriel fighting for their life!

And that is precisely why that guy is not getting paid for his opinions. Trash.

Why is it a trash opinion? I don't think Ritchie is a particularly good player and don't think he brings much of a complementary element to either of the top-six lines.

He's not fast, so he doesn't really help on the defensive side of the puck or on the forecheck. That also impedes his transition ability. He's really more of a puck-protection guy who scores from distance. That's not exactly what you want when you have Matthews on your line and he's too slow to put next to Tavares.

I didn't like the signing to begin with and haven't really seen much to be convinced otherwise.
