Just saw a tweet from august 2020 where dubas
Specifically says “how do you get a Seth Jones? They aren’t available. You have to pick top 5 or do a johansen type trade”

So it looks like dubas might have a target. Too bad we gave up all our assets to CBJ already
They owe us for the folignio trade :sarcasm:

That’s fair. Spezza Atleast had something to give, Simmonds and Joe are done. Go get guys like Coleman, Goodrow of the world that can play.

Goodrow would be a great signing. Wouldn't be cheap for what he brings, but he brings what we need. We should really shift our draft focus into drafting prospects like Goodrow so we don't have to overpay for them.

If we don't do anything drastic, I think we could see something like this next season;

Again, this is meant to be a tame off-season. Not meant to be what I personally want.

- Hyman brought back on a fair deal.
- Guys like Simmonds, Thornton, Foligno, replaced with young, energetic guys like Robertson, and Anderson.
- Leivo brought back on a 1 year deal. He's a dude that I think most people like. He fits the "underappreciated" players thing CJ was talking about. I feel there's some respect there between he and Dubas, since Dubas was the one who freed him from Bab's benchings. He isn't afraid to make some hits, and can shoot the puck. Good value for the fourth line.
- Bogosian brought back on the blueline. Sandin in full-time. Liljegren can play every so often in place of Holl or Bogosian, depending on matchup.
- Leafs bring in Raanta as 1B goalie. Again, Raanta is a fairly underappreciated goalie. He's not a guy you want to be your starter, or 1A goalie, but as a 1B or backup guy, he's extremely valuable.

So is it the core's fault for the past 5 years of failure of the last 17 years? Something needs to change, but I didnt realize if the Leafs had Jones over Marner they would have had a better season, beat the Habs and be a better team?

It’s not this core’s fault for the failures of the past 17 years but it certainly compounds things.

The post-lockout roster was poor but a regression was to be expected after the Leafs competed in the playoffs for several years prior with an aging roster.

Problem was, the organization neglected the draft for several years then brought in a blowhard to try and turn things around quick by gambling the picks of a lottery team to build around a soft winger. This was an era during which Toronto was utterly dominated by the Bruins and an embarassment to the fanbase. Burke set us back another 5+ years but the organization in a position to draft this current core.

Now we have an arguably top-5 core in the league and can’t get out of the 1st round for 5 years straight? That’s not luck or a couple bounces in tight games—that’s structural and boils down to the fact that this core simply isn’t good enough to compete when the going gets tough.

The last 17 years can be characterized by inept management and, now, being dominated by the Bruins and Habs with the current core. I’m embarassed having supported this team for the last 25 years.

So yea, change is in order. If the current management wants to continue coddling this group and giving them yet another chance to stick together, on the same lines with their buddies, then I’m willing to give up on this organization and shift my allegiance. At least if I order Gamecenter I could watch any other team without being blacked out and cancel my cable subscription—would feel doubly great to hit ownership financially, albeit minimally.

That third line is utterly pointless.

It's weird - because there isn't many players on this team I hate..... in the past, I'd scream get ____ outa here!!!!
This team has a culture issue (AGAIN) - and if it comes at the cost of the core, so be it.

I'd trade Marner (I have his jersey on my wall), Rielly (I was vouching for him for captain) and Engvall + Mikhayev (Because why not)

If we do nothing - I'm not sure I can stomach another full year with anticipation of another collapse in the playoffs with the same guys driving the bus.
1 (preferably 2) core pieces need to be moved in order to change the dynamic.

Marner + Rielly (extended)
for
Jones (extended) + Laine

(I realize Laine isn't some playoff beast that'll hit everything - but no one considered Nylander to up his game either)

Nylander - Matthews - Robertson
Hyman - Tavares - Laine
(Revamped bottom 6 - built for a grind)

Muzzin-Jones
Sandin-Brodie
Holl - Liljgren

I sincerely hope the plan isn't to bring back the exact same core for year 7 and just tinker around the edges. If it is Kyle Dubas needs to go.

Chris Johnson on Fan 590 right now says Marner is not being moved. Kind of thought he was kissing MM and KD's asses defending Marner. Rielly and Nylander could be moved. Hyman worth 5x5 but likely leaves for 6x6. The hosts are pissed because they think they should explore moving a player who has not scored in 18 playoff games since signing his deal and has more puck flip penalties than ES points. Bitching because other stars are scoring but Marner has not. They are as passionate as the fan base.

Prepare to be disappointed. Kyle better not get more than 1 more kick at the can. Seriously it won't be easy to fix this mess in a year so I expect the same or worse next year.

Two years in a row where our powerful offence could not get it done. Blamed Andy last year but not Soupy this year. And one spin master on this board claimed that Matty and Mitch could not be shut down. A $3m dollar Danaut shutdown our $25m top line. I hope those spin masters hide in their basements and do not come out until the dust settles.

I'm hoping we can get Cizikas on a lower cap hit than his 3.5M now. Hometown boy that plays exactly what we need in the bottom6 and would be agood fit with our team me thinks.

I think a decision needs to be made on Rielly because of his contract situation but it is pretty jarring when we are talking about trading 2 of about 5 guys who actually showed up during the playoffs

I defended Marner and think trading him now would be a mistake but keeping him and trading Nylander is pretty bloody questionable

I like Hyman but no way in hell I'd give him either of those contracts, you'd regret that within a couple of years imo

Agree with your take. Nylander's value has never been higher but I doubt they move him. Signing Hamilton and moving Rielly for a Boeser is a way to keep the team competitive while waiting for the Robertsons and Amirovs.

Paying a FA price for a 4th liner is almost never a good idea, and I like Cizikas, went to school with him actually.

His value is higher because his contract looks pretty good and he's shown he may have worked out this playoff thing

Those a extremely valuable traits this team needs more of to if we're being honest

I think Hamilton is going to be expensive on the open market, probably to expensive for us imo

I doubt you get a forward that good for 1 year of Rielly, I'm thinking somebody useful but not great plus a pick type of return

Interesting.

Wasn't Raanta making $4.25 m on his last contract though? I don't know (haven't researched) the market for goaltenders this off season though.

If they're keeping Marner, they need to get him off Matthews' line. I don't care how much both want it, the last two years have underlined that Babcock was right about that.

Not to keep piling on marner but dougie was on spittin chiclets saying that marners dad wanted him out of Toronto when babs put him on the fourth line.

honestly there is probably just too much at this point. He makes too much money. There is too much baggage. He is more than likely gone. Way more so than Matty. That’s a change I would probably make at this point.

Yeah, irreparable damage has been done by Marner and his camp. If you're gonna' hold out, have your agent talk about your teammate's contract and your father talk a barrel of shit about everyone you better back it up on the ice. Marner is basically all the negative Russian stereotypes rolled into one.

If William Nylander and his 6.9 million dollar contract is dealt but Mitch Marner and his 11 million dollar salary stick around to handicap our team for another season that very well could push me off the deep end of being a Leafs fan.

At the very least, I will not be watching this team again until management gets a complete face lift. What a f***ing joke

Does it make sense to resign Nash to replace Kerfoot as our #3C.
4C. 3C should be high priority.

Depth down the middle is so important. Just got beat by Danualt, Staal, Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Evans, Byron etc.

Tampa has like 7-8 forwards that can play centre. They won the cup last year without their captain Steven Stamkos. Leafs lost Tavares and it was really hard to ice two good lines, never mind 4.

The hosts go off on Johnson and rightfully so.

It's bonkers to me that piece of info - which I'm 99% sure wasn't ever reported? - hasn't blown up more.
