The cap is going to be flat for quite some time, so I'm not nearly as worried about raises so long as we lose our brutal contracts and the guy(s) who penned them.

This would be my lineup for next year

Hyman Matthews Nylander
Galchenyuk Tavares Palmieri
Robertson Cizikas Mik
Gabriel Brooks Spezza

Muzzin Jones
Hjalmarsson Brodie
Sandin Bogosian
Lilly

Campbell
Driedger

Marner traded for a signed Seth Jones
Rielly traded for first round pick plus grade A Prospect
Any idea what the cap hit would be?

Where did it all go wrong for the Maple Leafs? - TSN.ca

The Maple Leafs clearly had their sights set on the Stanley Cup this season, but it all came crashing down with a first round collapse to the Canadiens. Where did it all go wrong for Toronto? What's next for Kyle Dubas and their pending free agents? The TSN Hockey panel examines.

Not sure he did anything out of the ordinary if you look at the season. He swung and missed on Simmonds, Thornton and Foligno who were basically our depth.

Also, I think the coaching needs to definitely come in question. This team rode on its talent for a 1st place finish in the North but our special teams were underwhelming the entire year and that's partially on the coaching staff as well.
The PP started out extremely well, but we all saw how that went to Hell in a handbasket. And now we find out Marner refused to switch roles on the PP. What a spoiled brat!

In all seriousness, when was the last time a number one centre and a number one defender was available for trade because they both want out of a organization, at the same time

The leafs have a significant opportunity here honestly

Keep the core 4 and actually build a bottom 6 like Tampa did. No more of these “name” over the hill signings. They don’t need mentors, we need guys that can actually play. The bottom 6 needs to be addressed the most this offseason.

On the ice Kopitar is a leader but the Kings teams had a lot of leadership to help him along.

Richards
Mitchell
Williams
Regehr
Scuderi
Carter
I’m trying to think of a team (there are probably a few at least) where the best players, especially if they’ve been in the league for 5 years, aren’t your leaders. Shouldn’t Matthews (for sure) and Marner want to be leaders? I must be missing something.

But honestly, you have to think about Spezza here also, he’s also a”name” Old signing, and he was spectacular for you guys, all year Including the playoffs, considering his age

3 way trade with columbus and calgary with the main pieces being:
columbus - jones, laine.
calgary - tkachuk, gaudreau.
toronto - marner, rielly.

add bit pieces to make it work.

calgary gets marner, laine
toronto gets jones, tkachuk
columbus gets gaudreau, rielly

tkachuk and Jones would be a massive haul. We would need to add more but these are the type of players we need to add to the team. I think Tkachuk would light a fire under Matthews

ye, columbus gets the least in this deal since its clear laine hasnt worked for them and jones wants out...with a flat cap they are going to have issues moving them, and calgary and toronto might want a bit of a culture change.

to me each team gets a better player and a worse player than they currently have. with a bit of tinkering it could technically work.

Agreed about Tkachuk. He is buddies with Matthews. He would not be intimidated to tell him off when necessary.

If someone from the core not named Matthews isn’t moved this off-season, I’ll gladly renounce my support of this organization. Giving this core yet another shot after 5 disappointing 1st round exits is the definition on insanity. We haven’t made it out of the first round for 17 years.

So is it the core's fault for the past 5 years of failure of the last 17 years? Something needs to change, but I didnt realize if the Leafs had Jones over Marner they would have had a better season, beat the Habs and be a better team?

Domi lacks shooting ability and disappears with physical play as well. He is Marner-lite with more of a temper, which usually just gets him in trouble.

Bjorkstrand doesn't run people through the boards, but he does forecheck well, he will drive the net, and he can snipe. We need that more than just raw physicality. I think we can get a 25-30 goals and 60 points out him if he plays with Tavares... He'd also be a major weapon on the PP.
If BJork does that then all good for sure.

I didn’t like the foligno trade. I was good with the rest.

edit. Foligno owes us a cheap 1 year deal. He was terrible.
Foligno doesn't owe anyone anything. He's a free agent.

He owes it to himself and his family to do what's best for them.

Probably the Captain goes back to Columbus, where they have their home. He didn't trade himself to Toronto, after all.

I'm not sure the Leafs would want him back, anyway.

Pierre Lebrun on That’s Hockey
- Believes the heat is going to be on Shanahan a little bit. Lebrun says it’s clear that the Leafs are a better run organization from before he got here, however it’s a results orientated business and it’s going to be an uncomfortable off-season for Shanahan.
- Believes Leafs will work hard to find a 1B type goalie to play with Campbell, but obviously will want to use some of Andersen’s 5M elsewhere as well.

Can someone fill me in on this Dermott love? This is the guy who couldn't get into the lineup and when he did he coughed up the game in OT because he heard footsteps...again

Personally, I value defensemen who move the puck really well and I think Dermott is that. Additionally, he's our best rush defender and IMO shouldn't have been scratched during the series at all. Protecting the 25 year old versus the 30 year old seems like better asset management to me.

I know he had the one major turnover, but I just don't think Holl does much well lol. Kinda seems his numbers are propped up by Muzzin.

Only thing I'd really question is how good of a puck mover Dermott is. I think he has the skillset to be, but I don't think he thinks the game well and gets confused with heavy pressure.

Holl has his limitations, but he skates well for his size and usually plays within his limits. Muzzin is good physically downlow and has a great shot, but doesn't handle the puck overly well and his skating leaves a lot to be desired. Holl's also looked good beside basically everyone he has played with, so I Don't see it as him being propped up personally.

Made a whole bunch of changes to the roster. Not sure if it's that good or not. The D looks suspect now I think but I don't know, I'm not a GM haha. I did forget to bring back Spezza too. I guess Rielly could still stick around depending on the price of other UFAs. That left side is the only area that looks a little suspect.

Let's assume they keep Marner.

What type of upgrades can they make to this lineup?

I just don't see them having the guts to make a trade like that unfortunately.
