This was on Mapleleafshotstove:

This all stems from Marner’s unwillingness to play the goal-line at 5v4, which you can fact-check by asking the right people. Toronto’s best version of their power play all season was Nylander and Marner rotating along the left wall, with one of them playing the goal-line as a passer. It gave the top unit more flexibility, opened up passing lanes, created more motion and unpredictability.
But their $11 million winger wasn’t willing to do it.

That’s such an easy fix for any coach with a sack. You don’t like your role on the PP, you don’t have to play on the PP....

I know, but the nature of this conflict just never logically made any sense. It'd be one thing if the team wanted to remove Mitch from the PP entirely and he threw a tantrum, maybe I could buy that...but to refuse a coach's request to move to a slightly different spot on the 1st PP? That seems more far fetched.

It's easier to buy that Malhotra, who was a defensive specialist his whole career and I don't think ever played on the PP, simply didn't know how to adjust a PP. Our PK worked well and our faceoffs I think improved, which is where Malhotra's strengths always were.
I agree about Malhotra. To me, that hiring made absolutely no sense. But, that’s where Keefe should have intervened. I think I heard this on Overdrive, that Keefe would have the final say, so he must have been okay with that.
And speaking of Keefe, I’m not so sure about him now. I would love to hear the reason behind Thornton playing as much as he did, especially on the 1st PP unit. Makes you wonder who makes the decisions, the coach or the players.

So looking at our salary structure...we're actually not in that terrible of shape. If we deal Kerfoot (I know he stepped up but lets not be prisoners of the moment) and Engvall, we free up $11m:

Freddy - $5m
Kerfoot - $3.5m
Simmonds - $1.5m
Engvall - $1.2m

For $11m we can bring in a good backup, give Hyman his raise, resign Foligno for say 1 year @ $3m, resign Nash for 700k for 4th line C, and still have enough left over to sign or trade for another physical bottom-6 player who can ideally play C for around $2m.
Leafs cap situation doesnt get interesting until they have to re-sign Rielly, Campbell and Sandin next year.

Could move Muzzin to clear cap and cover those raises, I guess.

I guarantee you Joe had nothing to do anything. Joe is a vet and knows his role well. He doesn't have a rep of being needy. This definitely came from Manny

There is this culture with the Leafs of letting ppl run their show and doesn't want to come off as micromanagers

Dubas doesn't interfere with Keefe and Keefe doesn't intervene with Manny decision. Which he should have

Malhotra just sucked at his job

Then everyone, from upper management down, were showing us Einstein’s definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It’s hard to believe, even scary, that that was allowed to continue. Especially where this was considered to be the year with the easiest path to the semi finals. One would think management would be very concerned about our practically non-existent PP.

Tampa plays their Hymans on the 2nd and 3rd line. And their Hymans are actually better.

If he's willing to take $3M and play with Kerfoot, great. If not, let Edmonton pay him $5+M and regret it in 2 years.

Why would they regrett in 2 years ? In 2 years Hyman will be 31 or 32. Players don't lose their game at age. Especially players with minimal injuries history

How many lower body injuries is this for Hyman now? If he loses his skating (speed or power in the corners) his game is done.

Pie-in-the-sky:

Trades:
Marner + Reilly for Jones + Jenner
Mikheyev, Engvall, Kerfoot, Holl out for picks and Seattle draft

Sign:
Goodrow at about 3M
Coleman at about 4M
Danault at about 4M
Spezza at 750k
Oleksiak at 2.5M
Bogosian at 900k
Dermott at 900k
1B/2A goalie @ 2M

Jenner - Matthews - Nylander
Goodrow - Tavares - Coleman
X - Danault - X
Robertson - Brooks - Spezza
Anderson

Muzzin - Brodie
Oleksiak - Jones
Dermott - Bogosian
Sandin - Liljegren

Campbell
Backup

Two remaining X's depend on cap space (~6M if my math is correct) and will have to take into account a raise for Jones next year.

There are obviously too many moves being made here but I think we need a gue roster shake up. I'm hoping we make moves like this. I understand though extremely unlikely we deal marner let alone him and rielly (who I traded due to not thinking he will sign back otherwise would love him back)

Roster we have after the moves is

Schwartz - Matthews - Nylander
Cody Glass - JT - Copp
Tatar - Coleman - Robertson
Eric Robinson - Spezza -Getzlaf

Extra forwards
Brooks
Vinny Hinistroza

Muzzin - Seth Jones
Sandin - Brodie
Holl - Bogosian

Extra defenseman
Lilijgren
Nick Holden

Goalies
Campbell
Dreidger

All of our talk about Marner trades, Seth Jones, Eichel, new coaches.....it's all delusion. It's the same line-up next year with a few new Thorntons and Veseys. That's it. Finished.

There IS though potential for more than that.

Rielly, Hyman, Andersen, Dermott, Holl, Kerfoot all have the potential to leave the team either via trade, expansion selection or free agency.

So while I can understand frustration about one of the larger players not moving, there is the potential for bigger than superficial changes to happen

One omission I noticed today is when Dubas was asked about the status of Freddie, Galchenyuk, Bogosian and another player whose name I forget, he was fairly open in discussing all of the player, except Bogosian. Basically hinting he'd like to have Galchenyuk back, and that he'd talk to Freddie (in a different context, i.e backup).

Now, it could have been an oversight I am looking too deeply into, but Dubas is too calculating for that. I imagine one or both Parties might not be seeing eye to eye for a return for one reason or another.

Anything more then like 3-3.25M is stupid money for Hyman at his age and the punishment he's taken. You totally go for Coleman at that point

I wouldn't even sign Hyman for the 3-3.25M - been around for too many of the losses.

He also hasn't been 100% healthy two playoffs jn a row. Lot of wear and tear on the body.

I hope he comes back at a fair rate but I've got zero interest paying a 30 year old Hyman at 1st line money

If I am Bogo, I would not return. Almost all real contenders would love someone like Bogo in their lineup. I hate to say it but I think he will be a Bruins.

He would make a perfect Bruin. If I am the Leafs, I look at resigning him if possible and adding another who is similar.

You need big, mean D Men, especially in the playoffs.

Really warming up to the team making a run at Dougie Hamilton. He probably signs in the 7.5-8ish mil range given the flat cap. Would definitely mean the end of Rielly with the team though

We'd be losing leadership and $3 mil in cap room that we don't have for very little, if any, improvement on that swap.

Love that rover game. The leafs would feast.

I think he would solve a lot of problem for the leafs offensively, who have become kind of a slower paced and more conservative team.

Does anyone know if rodion amirov will be coming over for next season?
I think he and robertson will be ready to push for a full time job.

If Hyman asks for more then 4.5 do you let him walk? I’m thinking yes
