This is a scenario that I think would be interesting.
1. Trade JT.
2. Revamp the defence with 3 solid pairs.
3. Challenge the stars to carry their own lines.
4. Have enough cap space to carry a 23 man roster. Imagine rotating Cowan and Minten into this lineup every couple of games.

Vancouver traded Horvat and improved. It can be done. We're paying Brad millions to find the right trade.

Vancouver chose between Horvat and Miller. I'll choose Marner over JT.

When Flames and Panthers made the trade.
Flames looked like they won the trade with a 100pts LW in Hubie, 1st pairing Puck moving RHD in Weegar and a 1st rounder for Tkachuk-100pts LW.

you can’t possibly say, you felt Panthers won the trade when it happened.

That was a fair trade. That's all I'm asking for. Either get the best player in the trade or get some really good assets in return. I have not a seen a lot of trade packages on here even close to this kind of return.

Actually Vancouver chose Kuz and depth Dman over Horvat.

I do think any MM trade, MM will be the best player and I would rather have players than picks and prospects as they are unknown.

I generally like the makeup of this hypothetical team to some degree but as a keystone of it you're suggesting that:
1) NJ is interested in Tavares;
2) They're actually willing to trade a 1st round pick+ for him; and
3) JT is willing to waive his NMC to go to NJ

I can't even begin to tell you how extraordinarily unlikely it is that all 3 of those points manifest.

Mantha was a healthy scratch for Vegas. His work ethic is very poor. I’d stay far away, especially if we want to “change the culture”.

If I am Tre and Marner is the move. I am not looking at goalie or D. I am looking for a young 2c who can take over that role after next season when Tavares contract is up.

If JT wants to stay it's at a smaller cap it to play 3C.

Get a legit #2C in a Marner trade is more important that G or D where you can find some pieces via FA or trade.

The supporting cast definitely needs to be better there’s no doubt about that BUT it always goes back to how can you properly address the issue when the core four are taking up half the teams salary cap? You mention Panarin, Zibanejad and Kreider, they take up a total of 26.6 million while our top three forwards total of 33.5 million. That’s almost a 7 million dollar difference…
I'd argue 3 of our players are better then those 3 you mentioned, but paying your anchoring 2nd line C 11m is crippling Toronto.

Paying JT that money right now is pretty much taking a top 6F or a top 4D from us right now (assuming ur paying ur 2nd line C, 5m to 5.5m)

1. Doesn't have to be NJ. But I think he's an interesting fit for NJ. Could be Colorado, Tampa etc.
2. I looked at the return Giroux got for Philadelphia and went off that a template. So this is actually a bit low.
3. If he wants the security of another contract, there is ample reason for JT to waive and negotiate with another team. Do the leafs management have the balls to ask? That is something I am actually worried about.

Most of that is Mitch is currently being undervalued by some of our fanbase and opposing fans always like to dunk on the Leafs, so giving our players no value in trade proposals is quite common.

Trading Mitch could turn out to be the best move but I also think we'll be surprised how much value we'll get.

I've seen others mention this. Maybe I'm not understanding by why would anyone think they would be afraid?

I keep thinking JT would be a great fit for the Jets
Not sure where they sit on Niederreiter but if they are looking at getting out of that term I was thinking JT and Lil for Pionk, Niederreiter and Barron

I've wanted Pionk for a while and think Barron has a lot of potential
Niderreiter isn't a great contract but

I'm all for it if they can get a fair return.

I think it's been pretty well established that this team is reluctant to make any difficult decisions.

I think the team is reluctant to trade good players for players that aren't as good due to outside noise.

I'm pretty sure I heard Chris Johnston say that the leafs have never even considered a discussion about trading one of the 4. So they don't even know the returns.

I wonder if there is any way we could get Jiricek out of Columbus. He’s already shown frustration being there. They want/need centers, I’d be willing to include Minten in this type of deal along with our 1st round draft pick and more.

David Kampf and Jarnkrok have limited no trade clauses

That SBs are what really make me chuckle. Teams are reluctant to give their superstars SBs and this team is giving them up to bottom 6 guys. Oh, and they're not getting some good discounts over it either.

I can see Jarnkrok getting traded to Nashville for Winnipeg’s 2nd rounder or something like that.

We had Jarnkrok for almost a decade, that's seven years of being useless in the post-season including a finals run and I can't imagine he'll be much better now that he's entering his mid 30s. We won't trade a high pick in the middle of a rebuild for him.
