Versatility and speed isn’t nothing.

We have cheaper options who do the same thing. We don't need 40% of our forward core to be made up of guys who's main claim to a roster spot it versatility. We need guys who can make an impact.

Everyone here would love him if he made 900k. That’s the only difference.

Yeah, if he was making 900k, he'd make an excellent 4th liner. The problem isn't just that he makes 3.5, but that contract gets him slotted in the top 6 when he doesn't belong.

Who are you suggesting is cheaper and just as effective that is currently available?

What are you using that 3.5 on?

Signing some UFA?
For 3.5 we can get. 7million dollar player at 50% retained
You know someone to add to the success of the team
Our time is running out. Not because our stars will fall off but other teams are getting better and are catching us

Look at the years we have wasted with matthews and marner

Time for dubas to get rid of the dead weight like engval and kerfoot and try to win a cup

I’m onboard with moving Kerfoot, but man a lot of people seriously underrate him. He actually is surprisingly pretty aggressive. He’s a very good penalty killer and trusted by the coaching staff in every game situation. He does have a tendency to take some stupid penalties at times which hurt him.

I wonder if a team like Calgary doesn’t improve if someone like Hanifin becomes available. Sandin and Kerfoot potentially going the other way. I can see Kerfoot being interested in re-signing in Calgary being from the West coast.

Has the highest GF% on the team at 5-on-5 despite struggling to score some goals himself and only having a 40% OZS%. Excellent in his own end, but could do a little bit more offensively.

However, at the same time, he has a 4.4 ixG so far this year but has only scored once. He is not the best shooter in the world but he is better than a 3% shooter. If he had 3 or 4 goals on the year (which would match his career average shooting percentage), then 3.5 mill is an absolute steal for what he has brought to the table... And he is not the only one on this team who needs to fix a broken shooting percentage... Matthews being the most notable by far.

Kerfoot is an easy target, based upon having the higher cap hit, outside of the top 4. He's not the poorest of our 5v5 performers though, that goes to Jarnkrok. Engvall has had a disappointing season as well... and as mentioned Matthews 5v5 shooting isn't very good so far either.

It's easy to identify three needs for this team.... A top flight, physical RD, 3C, and 2LW. An argument could easily be made, to prioritize any of those spots. That being said, I don't think we've solidly established which is the main need. I also don't think we can take away forwards, to bring in D either... and we really don't need the cap space, assuming Muzzin is done.

It's kind of shocking how well we've done, despite the key injuries we've had on D, and in G, when our offense isn't really working very well. The hope is our offense starts clicking, while we stay defensively strong... then we can establish what it is we really need, maybe get some Marlies some games to see what we have there as well, and then figure out who has what we might need, that is available.

Patience folks.

That was the question, what do you need that 3.5 Cap hit for?

If you are making a trade, you move out the Cap hit of the player being traded.

If you aren't making a trade Cap space is irrelevant.

However, it would be nice if every trade wasn't dependent on charity where the other team retains 3.5 million so the player can fit under the Cap.

How do you all see the future of this blueline? I am pretty high on Topi Niemela, I think he can be a great puck mover for us and probably play in the NHL next year or the year after. Long term it does feel a bit weird to me to have Liljegren Niemela Rielly and Sandin. Too many smaller puck movers for my liking. Out of all of them Sandin is probably the slowest and also a left shot, I would consider moving Sandin out as I'm not sure he fits in with the long term plans. Liljegren has outplayed him and Rielly isn't going anywhere. While Rielly is out Sandin will get a chance to breakout offensively, if he fails to prove his worth I think we should ship him while he still has value and give Niemela a shot sooner than later.

They're on our roster already. Jarnkrok is the same. Malgin is the same. Engvall is often the same.

So, no one? Those guys just do the same things incrementally worse than Kerfoot does. I'm not a fan of Kerfoot at all, but unless we can trade him for something that will help us now, I don't see a point in giving him away for free/nothing.

I think you are correct is assessing that we don't need all of these puck movers. I don't know if Niemela will be a NHL guy yet, so it's hard to decide which you'd go with. The game has changed some though, but I do think we need at least one legitimate top 4 physical D man.

I didn’t suggest giving him away for nothing. I did say we would be better off with a different player, and I did say he wouldn’t return much… but that was to explain the predicament he’s put us in more than a proposal.

So who are you bringing in to improve the squad?

We’d have to make two trades, since he won’t return much value. The cap space he would open up does give us several options.

With Calgary on and off, I’d be keeping an eye on Hanifin. One year remaining after this one and they have Andersson, Weegar, Tanev and Zadorov already. Maybe something involving Sandin and Kerfoot going the other way. Salaries are basically identical.

Even without moving him, we have Muzzin's cap space, so you'd keep that in mind.

We don't necessarily need to move cap.... Muzzin's LTIR...

I don't think Calgary misses the playoffs, or at the very least, is right there until the end. I think you'll need to go shopping elsewhere.

Well we definitley need 4 PKers. I like Lilly there but not so much Rielly Sandin or Niemela.

I don’t think it’ll take them to miss the playoffs. Even just squeaking into the playoffs is probably a disappointment for them.

I don't disagree with the notion that it would make sense to trade Kerfoot to open up that cap space and use that cap space on a player that will better compliment this roster.

I don't think Kerfoot is a bad player but he is just a much lighter version of what we already have in elite top 6 players. A player that will bring a different dynamic to the top 6 is much needed.

Dont move the goalposts

He is 100 per cent not worth his cap of 3.5

We need a third line that can contribute more than janrok engvall and kerfoot.
He is out of his element on the second line.
Kerfoot and engvall have to go in order for us to have a third line that can contribute
