Not sure I would play Horvat at #3C and how close he gets us to a Cup but I'd be all over him. If he does not help us out of round #1, one of the big 4 would have to go to be able to resign Horvat.
The reason I am putting Horvat as 3C is due to the watered down portion of my post.

In the current league state, there is no defending a team that has our core + Horvat acting as General for the bottom 6.

I am in the extreme group of "wasting core years" here. We are setup to win a cup with ease but our management is too cute and too vanilla (and when they do get adventurous and spend assets its a total fail of a move)

Horvat as our 3C, would make a formidable lineup down the middle. My opinion is that I'd like to obtain someone we could keep long-term for that role. If you are going to give up good assets, let's not make it a rental, and there is zero chance we could keep Horvat.

I’d rather give up futures on players with term. There’s no chance we’d be able to afford Horvat beyond this season if we acquired him.

Since Dubas likes dealing with Arizona, I’m opening up to the idea of Chychrun and Hayton.

Acquiring both of those guys would really help fix two holes we have. Include Rasmus Sandin, Pierre Engvall, a 1st and whatever else it would take to make it happen.

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson - Tavares - Marner
Kerfoot - Hayton - Jarnkrok
Aston Reese - Kampf - Malgin

Chychrun - Liljegren
Rielly - Brodie
Giordano - Timmins

Murray - Samsonov

LW not SC worthy and too many small skilled players who will not succeed when the real season starts.

Perhaps we can expand the deal to include Crouse and Robertson??

Kerfoot + Sandin (+ Pick?)

For

Gavrikov + Nyquist @ 50%

We might have to throw in our conditional 2nd/3rd that we gave Arizona in the Nick Ritchie trade. Columbus gets whatever pick is leftover.

thats garbage .... nyquist is terrible

I'm just curious, why Hayton. Is this a Soo Meme theme?

I mean, he's a clubhouse leader for the best golf score in the league... currently -12.. and three points... that's who we want to for a 3C? I get he's young, but Arizona is devoid of C's, and he's playing being freaking Travis Boyd and Bjugstad!!!!

We want to upgrade, and improve our offense, so we trade for a guy pacing for 14 points?

Honestly, I think we'd need to aim a little higher, unless there is a legit case for him suddenly breaking out. He really should have seen extended time in AHL to grow his game...

Caps are competing...do you think they'd be willing to do something like Kerfoot for Eller? Change of scenery/shake up trade for both clubs.

I don’t get Eller either. I’m not seeing him as an improvement.
He's a true centre, 2-way guy.

Kerfoot isn't a centre, I like having insurance at the positon.

Maybe a change of scenery wakes Eller up a bit more offensively? If we could do a hockey trade by Christmas, maybe we can investigate more of a traditional "buying" trade for D

I get that he’s a true C, but wonder if we should be looking for offensive upgrades as well.

Horvat is probably overqualified and more costly than most traditional "3C" types.

Other options are Toews, ROR and Monahan from clubs that could either miss or maybe miss.

Eller cap hit/acquisition cost may enable us to tackle other roster concerns but probably not offensively threatening like the other names.

After that, I would need to familiarize myself with the guys that are under term + available.

Roslovic? Disappointing this year.

Henrique?

High cap hit and the extra year of term, plus being used as LW.

eller would be an improvement over the current 3C situation but probably wouldnt be worth the pricetag. Hes not the same player he was 3/4 years ago.

Don’t even see how Vatrano is really an upgrade on Kerfoot. They’d definitely need to retain on either him or Henrique.

Almost anyone would be an upgrade for our 3C right now.

Is Willy likely to stay beyond this season?

I know people are 'all in' on wanting to win this year, but i'd look into the trade option and then see if there's a deal to be done for Bo Horvat whereby he also signs a LT deal here. I think this summer is a great opportunity to maybe spread the money we'd be expecting Nylander to receive across two players long-term to make the foundations of this team stronger.

If we're moving Kerfoot for a similar -cap change of scenery type player I wouldn't mind seeing the return of Kapanen. He's got an extra year (which can be seen as both a + and a -, but provides a different element to the bottom 6. A little heavier game, and his speed/shot should boost the output of the 3rd line regardless of who is on it.

If Pittsburgh would retain a little on his contract, that wouldn’t be bad. Thing is, I can see/want Connor Brown returning for the third line this off-season. Local kid who loved being here, he’s coming off a major surgery that is keeping him out of the lineup for Washington all year… He’ll probably be pretty cheap this off-season.
