That's what I think will happen as well. I just don't see the Leafs going after an expensive defenseman.

I think Horvat fits exactly what we need. From London, knows Marner very well, a capable scorer that plays very good 2-way. Plenty of intangibles. Can flip to the LW when in need.

EDIT: Also with Timmins acquired, I think the Leafs have plenty of defensive depth going forward. It seems unlikely they need to acquire another one.
I'm thinking more of a veteran defenseman who we know can play in the NHL, I like the Timmins addition but not sure if he's NHL quality or not.

I'm also someone who like Monahan as a third line center, but it's a good year with Horvat/Toews/O'Rielly all as potential higher end centers on the trade market as probably 3 of these teams probably doesn't make the playoffs.

Weaponize Muzzin's LTIR cap space by retaining on Kerfoot 50% in an attempt to upgrade him.

Kerfoot double retained, once flipped again @50% RET by a rebuilding team, is a pretty nice TDL play.

For now, anyway. I think the obvious upgrade is at LW, not 3C. The combination of Holmberg and Kampf is working well with the occasional appearance from Kerfoot. I'd look to package Neimela, one of Anderson, Steves, or SDA, and one of Kerfoot or Engvall for an impact 2LW on a short term contract. Jarnkrok looks good in the top-6, and I think you can slot Bunting down to either 2LW or 3LW, so depending on the quality of asset you have a lot of flexibility as to where they play.
I'd let Holmberg take 3C for the next while. If he can continue to do well there and provide some depth scoring we have our solution and can focus on 2LW

Either way I think we move Kerfoot. He just doesn't have a role here at this point

Agreed .. The Leafs are playing well and aren't chasing in the standings. A great opportunity to see what the kid's got before making any decisions before the deadline.

Alright, a little slower at work today. I tried to do something to help the team along. 3 seems like a lot of trades...the Engvall one feels like it would need to be sooner rather than later in order to reduce the necessity of making so many deals close to/on the TDL day.

I welcome all feed back guys, just ask it's constructive;

Note: You could sub out AA for Domi, same salary.

I don't see how we lose on any of those. Sign me up. Don't like Domi but I'd rather him than Engvall or even this year Kerfoot.

Saw some Habs fans complaining about him the other day and saying he's available.

They do have Suzuki, Dach, Evans and probably Beck next year.

I think they messed up trading a 1st for him. Not sure if they'd take Kerfoot, 3rd and a 4th (essentially a 3rd, 3rd and 4th, maybe more if they can milk Kerfoot for more than a 3rd at TDL)

I guess it's different every year in terms of value.

Someone would definitely overpay them for Kerfoot. With retention, pennies owed, Swiss army knife type, penalty killing....easily a 2nd+

The 3rd line needs a big jolt. Engval and Jarnkrok are 4th liners. Horvat is the dream but a more realistic target is Sean Monahan. And call up Joey Anderson.

Robertson-Matthews-Nylander
Bunting-Tavares-Marner
Kerfoot-Monahan-Anderson
Engvall-Kampf-Jarnkrok

I wouldn’t mind Domi for a playoff run, but don’t forget, the Marners and the Domis are feuding. I can’t see it happening.

Jarnkrok is on pace for 28 pts and 17 goals (would be a career high) - his numbers are fairly in line with where he's been in his career as a 3rd liner.

Maybe a Knies-Holmberg-Jarnkrok has more offense than what Kerfoot or Engvall provide?

Lafreniere could be an interesting buy-low candidate at LW. If he can’t figure it out playing in our top-six he never will.
I was actually thinking about that the other day, but I still think the Rangers would want something crazy in return given his draft status.

Given the minutes etc that Lafrenierre gets etc...the production isn't that much better than Robertson. Robertson has good one time ability and may work better at RW for the Rangers...

I don't know if I go much further than Robertson and a 3rd or 4th for Lafrenierre.

I suspect those fans will tell you they want more/will hold onto him or another fan base may ask for more but no point in reality.

I think the Leafs have a ton of experience on the back end... it doesn't seem necessary. Benn and Mete is a lot of experience for depth. Timmins is a TBD for sure. When healthy, I'm not sure there is much room unless there is a big acquisition to push everyone down.

Monahan is having a good bounce back year and he's a good story, but his injury history makes it very risky. Horvat or Toews at 50% to me feels so much better and safer for a lot of reasons.

Monahan wouldn’t be bad, local guy as well and would probably be interested in re-signing.

It just screams Foligno level of acquisition. A player we trade for only to get injured in his first game. It could happen to any player, but Monahan has a very risky injury history that I would stay far away from, especially considering he will take up the majority of the LTIR even at 50%.

There are a lot of options that would fit, so I think taking a much lower risk player would be far better.

If Florida needs to move salary, kick tires on Sam Bennett............?

Brings a lot more than Kerfoot, and moving on from Engval as well.

:)

They’ll most likely just dump Hornqvist somewhere.

And if they looked at trading someone else, say if there’s no takers for Hornqvist, I assume they would consider trading Verhaeghe or Reinhart before Sam Bennett.

Florida has a good thing with Barkov, Lundell and Bennett down the middle

Six of Domi’s 14 points come on the PP. He wouldn’t get that ice time here. He’s got 8 Even Strength points, playing almost all of his time with Kane. I’m not saying he’s a bad player, just that his stats this year are inflated. Even strength, he’s not really an upgrade on Kerfoot. He’s not physical.. I’m not sure he’s what we want.

How about something like:

Rielly
for
Andersson, Rasmus

Brodie-Andersson
Giordano-Holl
Sandin-Liljegren
Benn-Oneofseveral

Rielly-Weeger
Hanifin-Tanev
Zadorov-Stone
Calgary can’t afford to take on more Cap on D.

for me with the center's it probably just comes down to price all 4(Toews/Horvat/Monahan/O'Rielly) fill the need so I would probably just go with the cheapest option that works cap wise of course.

Backlund probably be a good 3rd. line center.
He most certainly would be. High cap hit for a 3C, and Calgary would need to fall completely out of contention. Despite some horrible play, they are only one point out of the playoffs.

Thing is, the cost to acquire Monahan wouldn’t be a 1st what costed us to get Foligno. If the cost was pretty cheap, I wouldn’t mind Monahan.
