The best advice I'd give Tony is bite the bullet and sign the contract and have a great season and come back next year with arbitration rights.
Exactly right. Sign the deal and force your long term, lucrative deal. Enough histrionics as they will hurt the career. No Roger. No Rerun. No rent.

It would be one thing if the team had the cap space. But by holding out, what does he think the team is going to do? Their options are limited. They're not going to trade a Strome or Namestnikov because if they could, they would have already so they wouldn't have had to buy out Shattenkirk. Any raise he gets is going to be very small. Sign the 1 year deal, get into camp, and have a big year.

The only thing I could see here, in terms of a strategy, is waiting to see if another team loses a forward to injury and makes the Rangers a good offer for someone like Namestnikov.

I have the answer. Hank has big bucks, right? Ask Hank to re-work his contract if he want Tony to be a part of this team.

Oh wait, why couldn't they have already figured out how much they would have to give Tony, maybe given Trouba a little less?

Okay, expecting my ideas to be shot to hell.
Disclaimer.....I am half joking.

Tony is probably asking a whole lot more, 2 or 3 hundred K maybe? Otherwise they would have given him what they gave Lemmy, maybe a dollar more.

There’s no mechanism to rework contracts in the NHL sadly. And they didn’t tailor Trouba’s offer around Tony because Trouba is a better and more important player. I think they definitely thought they could unload Namestnikov, and had the cap increased as expected they probably could have.

Now though, it is what it is. They should offer 1.25 or something workable and tell him this is all they can do, he’s fairly unproven still, take it or sit

If I was DeAngelo and seen the Rangers drop tons of money on Panarin and Trouba... I’d be upset at management for not taking care of there own

Spend all that cash but can’t afford to give me a slight raise above the QO

I don't know if I am wrong, but I have never seen an athlete be such a vocal supporter of out of market teams as ADA. He's constantly banging his Philly drum. I respect it, because he is a fan, but usually, guys chill when they are playing in a market and generally don't openly root for rivals. It may be nothing but it tells me he definitely has not bought all in to the NY thing and because of that, I don't think he's a long term guy here.

I personally think Pionk's contract is the problem Tony evaluates himself as a better player than Pionk and wants his money Ada is a very emotional person and I believe if he doesn't get the money he believes he's worth and Brisson
can't convince him to calm down and take what nyr can offer its going to get ugly

Panarin and Trouba are all world talent and DeAngelo is a guy who was scratched for a lot of last year and has to prove himself before he gets a bigger contract. Just the fact that he believes he is owed something more from this team after not being someone who can be trusted by the coach is pretty weird. He has to take the 1 year low money deal, work his butt off and actually earn a his payday like everyone else. The team spent that money on the free agents knowing they didnt need it for anyone else because they werent giving ada a deal with term. He isnt in their long term plans

He’s been openly rooting for the Flyers?

You mean someone that is on their 3rd team in 4 years and has never sniffed 35 points would be upset that the two premier free agents were signed to premier free agent contracts?

DeAngelo thinks he deserves a raise

Is DeAngelo a 30 point defenseman or a defenseman who has hit 30 points? He can be a perennial talent but I can also see him in the KHL in three years.

DeAngelo thinks he deserves a raise
DeAngelo can think what he wants. The issue is that he has about as much leverage as I do. This is not a top pairing defenseman on a team with Stanley Cup aspirations. He is a 2nd pair d-man, in danger of becoming third piar, on a team that is still in the developmental stage. The Rangers have no "need" to give in to him at all.

So far, this looks like the definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face. If DeAngelo thinks that he can miss a year and still get the contract that he wants, he is sadly mistaken.

Normally I'm indifferent to these negotiations since you never really know what the situation is between the team and the player. However, I think Tony is going to hurt his position if he holds out of camp. Fox is talented enough that he could earn a spot out of the gate and if he does that then Tony will be fighting an uphill battle.

Still, I remain pretty confident that he's a pump-and-dump asset for the Rangers. Trouba/Fox/Lundkvist are probably the future down the right side.

I don't think sitting out the season is the endgame. But who knows, I was convinced he would sign before training camp opened. Sitting out is just so dumb, particularly when it's for, presumably, not a huge amount. Can anyone be that dumb? Maybe there are other factors at play. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Spot on. I think this is the real issue also. Pretty annoying to ADA that a crummy Pionk who obviously is far less valuable than ADA got 3.55 mil from the cap strapped Jets. Probably has to suck it up and have a good year to get his $ but anyone would be upset to be underpaid by so much. Especially since the young players are getting paid now more than ever.

He should be getting paid more, but he has basically no leverage. He'll have to bite the bullet on this one, but anyone counting on prospects developing and taking his spot for the future are being overly optimistic. I'm sure both Tampa and Arizona fans were penciling in DeAngelo for years to come and he never made it in either location.

It could take prospects, especially on defense, years before they are ready. DeAngelo is much more a known than Fox and Lundkvist and we shouldn't be ready to move on from him because we have these two higher end prospects and Trouba. Hopefully in two years we can say that, but I find it hard to count that DeAngelo won't be here for a while.

I'm still having a hard time understanding how a guy who couldnt stay in the lineup deserves something better from us. He was in the final year of his contract last year and what did he do? He wasnt able to gain the coaches trust and ended up watching the game, a guy in the final year of his deal. He needs to prove to the Rangers he can be a team player and be in the lineup for the whole year before this team commits to him longterm. He had that opportunity last year and for the first half or more of the year for whatever reason he failed. He needs to show us he has changed and is committed to the team before they commit to him.

If he wants to be paid a stupid deal like that, he should demand a trade and get it over with. He has no position to be asking for that type of money and WPG was absolutely insane to give it to Pionk
