I'm still having a hard time understanding how a guy who couldnt stay in the lineup deserves something better from us. He was in the final year of his contract last year and what did he do? He wasnt able to gain the coaches trust and ended up watching the game, a guy in the final year of his deal. He needs to prove to the Rangers he can be a team player and be in the lineup for the whole year before this team commits to him longterm. He had that opportunity last year and for the first half or more of the year for whatever reason he failed. He needs to show us he has changed and is committed to the team before they commit to him.

Is two years long term? No it's not. He should be getting a bridge deal that takes two years with a nice cap number attached.

Pionk did have arb rights, so of course he got more. Don't mind players sitting out like this, even one a enigmatic as DeAngelo. Should fight to get paid while he can be good as opposed to the way the league operates now where older players get more money when they are declining.

If Tony wants to hold out to try to get closer to what he deserves, then that's his prerogative and I don't hold it against him.

I have, however, grown indifferent to the situation. We have so many promising youths in the system, and so much positivity surrounding us. Unfortunately for ADA, his hold out has already been overshadowed by this.

There's no more money to give him. What does he expect the Rangers to do?

Doctors say that some cancers you can see a mile away.....

It would be more out of character if ADA took his QO with a forced smile and showed up to camp on time and motivated to earn his next contract.

Third organization in three years. 90 games with the Rangers. Holding out of camp for more money.

he needs to get into camp

the hold out thing is dumb

at this point he's looking to get moved thinking he wont play for 925 and have to deal with the quinn bin stuff again.

i think hes making a mistake here but can see both sides.

he deserves more $$ no question. fox is making the same. 925 is an insult. its rookie money.

Correction - the way the league used to operate. Big transition going on now with the younger players getting paid now. ADA has his issues but he is far better than Smith and Staal who make far more. And while it remains to be proven he may be as good as Skjei who makes big $ also. I don't blame ADA but the only way he likely can get what he wants is if he gets an offer sheet.

BTW - he had 30 points last year in far less usage than Krug who had 40. And while he definitely has defensive issues his zone exits statistically were league elite. He may be a more talented offensive dman than Trouba.

They absolutely have money left. Right now, they have 1.16M left over. This is with 14 forwards and 6 defensemen. Tony would make 7. They won't carry 14 forwards. Either McKegg or Nieves will get waived. That adds 750K for McKegg. Add in burying Smith and having someone making less fill the void (potentially Joe Morrow) and they could save up to another 500K.

I'm not saying DeAngelo should be asking for 2M per season, but he could get around 1.5 this season and they are safely under the cap. He has much more of a case than Lemieux to get paid more than the QO

So we are going to determine our lineup before they even play a preseason game, just so that Tony can get a few extra bucks? Sorry guys, you don't have a chance to make the team because Tony wants more money. The moose out front should have told you.

Brendan Smith and Greg McKegg have as good of a chance to make the roster as most of the AHL players in camp. They aren't going to be around. Smith isn't good. McKegg has been in the AHL forever. We have an abundance of forward options.

We're talking about players that are barely NHL caliber vs someone that is a top 4 NHL defenseman. This shouldn't even be a question at this point.

Smith is the only viable 4th RHD this season in the entire organization. And even if ADA comes in soon there is no way that ADA and Fox make it thru the season playing all the games. I see Smith having a great opportunity to get some decent minutes this season even if he has to start in Hartford for cap reasons. And DQ seemed to like him in the 13th forward last season as well.

Everyday he’s not in camp is just another day Fox gets to show he can take Tony’s minutes

I'm sorry but thats a stretch

fox is talented but hes a rookie and there is a curve. to assume he can just be plugged in and play top 4 minutes is a little bit of a stretch.

this team needs ADA no matter what the spin is. team is way weaker without 77 on that 2nd pair and certainly on the PP1 or PP2.

i think tony his playing with fire here but again, i can see the issue he may have with the 925 and quinn.

you take the 925 and play well yet quinn returns to form like last season, hes stuck.

you take the 925 and not get any minutes, hes stuck.

you take the 925 and blow out a shoulder, hes stuck.

you get 1.5 for a year and you feel better about alot of things.

Him and his agent are being so short-sighted. If anything, this league overpays players like him (see Pionk) he just needs to be patient and show he's not a dumb ass and can be counted on consistently. There are no poor 25 year old NHL players.

He's a 30 point player with maturity issues. The Rangers shouldn't increase their offer by one cent. If he doesn't like it he can go play in Switzerland.
A 30 point dman (trending upwards) is far more valuable than what he will have to play for this season; even with his issues. He is extremely talented. If he can grow out of his numbskull stage he can be a star in this league. He has far more offensive talent than Trouba whose 50 point season seemed to have propelled him into a new tier, not that ADA will ever have his overall game.

Great, show it for more than a two month stretch and then he'll get his money.

This again? If DeAngelo signs and returns to the form of the first half of last year, he's not playing. If DeAngelo signs and returns to the form of the second half of last year, he's playing.

You hold out for $1.5 (if that is the amount) or whatever the amount he wants, and you do not get it, you miss the entire year, he's stuck. Do that and he will be lucky just to be able to get an offer for the league minimum.

If this is truly what Tony is thinking, putting the blame on Quinn rather than his own failings, then he won't be long for the organization.

I agree there’s a curve, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say Fox can play top 4 minutes after he gets going though. Most hockey pundits are expecting him to do that this year.

Also if he has an issue with Quinn, maybe he needs to really look in the mirror and figure out his issues. Not much Quinn did with Tony last season was uncalled for.

I’ll say it again, the team is better with DeAngelo on it, but I’m not bending over backwards to have him on it. And if he wants out, I’m trading him to the least desirable spot possible and washing my hands of it.

I do not understand how people seem to miss that is exactly that simple. Sign your contract, come in and pick up where you left off, get a long term deal that pays you market value. Don't sign your contract and either put yourself behind the 8 ball by being out of shape or miss the whole season and you may not get a contract that is even close to what the Rangers are offering him this year.

I am not angry at him. He has the right to make whatever choice he wants. But just from my perch, someone is giving him very poor advice.

And if he wants out, I’m trading him to the least desirable spot possible and washing my hands of it.
That is providing anyone even wants the headache of having him on the team. What is the return going to even be?

I do not know Gorton on a personal level to know how his personality works, but if I am him and find myself dealing with this BS, screw it. Enjoy missing an entire NHL season as you are trying to get yourself a long term deal, Tony. See how that works for you.
