also another day that he could show he's not ready yet and we need ada even more than we think :P
Seeing as we're still "rebuilding", I seriously doubt anyone in management is thinking he is irreplaceable. The defense is a work in progress with or without him.

Leverage is in the eye of the beholder. Carolina had no leverage vs. the Rangers but extracted 2 no. 2's for Fox because the Rangers didn't want to wait them out. Somewhat similarily ADA could be the Rangers 2nd best dman this year. Do they really want to screw him out of a few 100K's because he has no place to go. What if he stands on principle and doesn't sign. Lemiuex was in the same (really worse) predicament and the Rangers sweetened the pot by 50K. I suspect the Rangers will give ADA an extra 200K or so to sign.

Do you really think this is over a few 100ks? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's not. It may have been Brooks or some other writer but someone made the comment this weekend that both sides were very far apart in terms of ask.

They can't be THAT far apart!!! Rangers offered $925,000...they only have $1,162,000 in space -- a difference of $262,000.

I personally think Pionk's contract is the problem Tony evaluates himself as a better player than Pionk and wants his money Ada is a very emotional person and I believe if he doesn't get the money he believes he's worth and Brisson
can't convince him to calm down and take what nyr can offer its going to get ugly
Yea I agree. I’m not saying ADA is completely blameless for this situation, but it’s a number of things working together to create the perfect storm. Pionk, an obviously worse player that was compared with ADA for most of his Rangers career, got a big raise (yea I know Pionk had arbitration rights, but ADA’s leverage comes from his great season), the Rangers don’t have the cap, he had a career year, RFA’s in general are getting huge raises, and ADA probably wants some kind of financial security in case it doesn’t work out. And he’s an emotional kid. Believes in himself and all that. I really hope the Rangers see him as part of the solution. We don’t know how the other prospects will turn out, so it’s good to keep a (mostly) sure thing in DeAngelo, who is still young.

I absolutely think the sides are within range; and a few 100K's will get it done. No leaks indicating it is contentious, as typically happens if it is. I think the Rangers are sympathetic to ADA's plight and don't want to screw him because they hold all the perceived cards. Doesn't seem to me that this management group operates that way. That was Sather's MO. Also the landscape has changed and everyone knows it.

This was on Saturday. I think the Ranger's sympathy is running out and maybe they aren't as high on him as others. Guy had 30 points last year. He should sign the contract.

That's some pretty convoluted logic going on there.

A.) You don't know what the Rangers offered. Brooks is ASSuming that they've offered as much as Lemieux. We know the QO is on the table
B.) You don't know what Tony wants. He probably doesn't give a flying llama about the Rangers cap space.
C.) You don't know what term the Rangers have offered or what term ADA wants.

They can be, and apparently are, THAT far apart. Tony is overestimating his position and it's going to hurt him (and the Rangers).

Brendan Smith, though, is probably somewhat hopeful with what is going on here.

FYI 30 points given what happened last year and his usage was huge. This guy had one of the highest zone exit stats of any dman in the league. He is a huge talent if he can keep from going off the rails or whatever his makeup issue is. And Quinn seemed to be able to manage him far better than AV.

ps - Brooks is right about as much as a broken clock.

What reason do the Rangers have to even think about what he is demanding? He has less than no leverage. In fact, it's tough to recall a situation where a player had less.

If he's seriously trying to make an argument that his 30 point season on a terrible team (in between a few healthy scratches for attitude issues) warrants more money or term, the Rangers look right at Trouba and Fox and tell DeAngelo to take a hike.

Seems to me that if management was as high on him as you are, they would have gotten the deal done. Or, maybe Deangelo and his agent are asking for something stupid. I’m only sharing information I’ve seen pertaining to the rift between the two sides. At this point, it’s pretty obvious this holdout isn’t about an extra 100k. I certainly wouldn’t be comfortable giving this guy long term security until I was absolutely certain he’s matured and proved he could handle the responsibility.

If DeAngelo sits out he will be making the worst mistake of his career, in which he has made a quite a few. Joey Keane looked good in prospects camp, I wouldn't want to open the door for someone to impress if I was tony.

Is two years long term? No it's not. He should be getting a bridge deal that takes two years with a nice cap number attached.

Pionk did have arb rights, so of course he got more. Don't mind players sitting out like this, even one a enigmatic as DeAngelo. Should fight to get paid while he can be good as opposed to the way the league operates now where older players get more money when they are declining.

Pionk also was able to toe the line, be a good teammate and play all season. I'll quote a paragraph that I feel sums up his season with us from the hockey writers

"Speaking of, while Quinn is a fan of DeAngelo’s aggression and passing ability, he also has shown a needed intolerance when his immaturity rises. Quinn scratched the 2014 draft pick about 20 times, most notably in the early portion of the season, as well as two games after the All-Star break due to a “maturity issue.”
This is the difference between him getting a contract he thinks he has earned and getting one he actually deserves.

That being how much cap space we have without moving anyone doesn’t mean he’s willing to play for that. Hard to believe he’s hold out for pennies more, I think it’s more likely that he’s banking on cap space being cleared when final cuts are made. Not saying that’s good advice...
