I wonder if he signs right around the opener, I'm sure he knows the money isn't getting better, but maybe he just waits to report to work when he actually starts getting paid, which is the first day of the regular season for hockey players, right?
This would be a terrible way to endear himself to the organization

So I hope for his sake that’s not what he’s doing

I hope that isn't his ask, because we can't give him what we don't have.

If we assume that Kravtsov makes the team and Nieves and McKegg are both sent down, that leaves us with $1,685,201 in cap space for 13 forwards, 7 dmen and 2 goalies. We need at least 500k to work with during the season, and every penny we save matters because we are likely to have performance bonuses to pay out. Whatever we can't pay off this year rolls over to next year's cap.

Yes, there is some flexibility regarding the team composition. We could send Smith down and keep Rykov, for example, and save 150k, but that isn't a great option IMO. I don't want Rykov as the 7th dman. He needs to play. Smith is a great option for the 7th dman spot because we don't care if he ever plays, and he can play LD, RD or 4th line if needed.

The math isn't changing. Tony needs to sign the contract he has been offered.
According to Cap Friendly, we don't even have that much to work with....they have a figure of $1,162,000 with the current roster.

how'd that work for willy nylander ?

bad idea.

i get it. 925 is chump money for ADA. really, that's rook min $$. that adam fox money.

hes potentially a top 3 defender on this team who's shown he can be both productive and reliable. his personality notwithstanding, hes shown hes worth more that 925.

if we think about this from tony and his agents point of view, it becomes clearer. he does deserve more $$. i see things the way they do. they arent wrong but sadly they arent in a great bargaining spot.

however, he needs to sign NOW and play with an even bigger chip, if thats possible. hes playing for his next contract this season whether here or elsewhere.

That current roster includes McKegg (750k), Nieves (700k) and doesn't include Kravtsov (925k). My assumption was that Kravtsov would be on the team and the other two not, which would open up another 525k. However it shakes out, we aren't going to carry 14 forwards.

the solution is to move one of the extra forwards.

dont see a need for both names and strome when we have guys like quickie and boo. andersson and lemme too. there are simply too many forwards to play bottom 6.

move one for a 3rd rounder and create the cap space to bridge tony.

2 yr 2.2 mil prob gets it done or 1 yr 1.4 prob also.

remember, skjei, trouba, staal and smith are the ONLY nhl forwards on the roster. no one is a proven nhl dman- and thats debatable with smith. other than ADA, there is only rooks.

JD needs to soften and JG needs to move a forward for a pick to create some room. simple.

that may well be what the plan is already. create space to give ADA the $$ he deserves.

get ADA signed

1) he does not need to soften at all.
2) There are NO deals out there. If he could have moved the players you named, he would have. NO ONE is trading for them at their contract levels.

Nah. We needed to make a trade to avoid a Shatty buyout. We couldn't.

We don't need to pay ADA more. He can sign or sit. No trade of him, or anyone else.

Yes, it's really that simple :help:

Names has been on the trade block all summer. Teams are tight against the cap or internal budgets, and some still have important RFAs to sign. Which team is taking him?

Love ADA's talent but definitely wouldn't move anyone to give him a raise. I'm not even certain ADA will be a Ranger in a couple years. Headache after headache with this kid, everywhere he's been.

I'm not certain he'll be a Ranger next year.

Oh gawd, Smith to the AHL, Names to A N Y W H E R E.

TDA is way more valuable to the current structure of this team, as well as the future.

Dubi and Step did us MUCH worse if people are acting like this over TDA. Those two were considered locker room and coaches sweetheart wet dream boys .

Come on, he's got to sign.

Dubi and Step had proven a lot more than Tony, and without the maturity issues. The thing that bothers me about Tony holding out isn't really that he's holding out for more money, it's that he's holding out for more money when there is no more money. What exactly is he hoping to accomplish?

Brendan smith gone at the least would make it open up for a 300k bump. How is that a problem ?

What are people acting over? And why should the Rangers bend for DeAngelo?

They seem to like Smith as a 12th forward/7th defenseman. And if Names could be traded anywhere, he would have.

The narrative that Gorton is simply not attempting to make moves is ridiculous. You can't give away Names right now for free. Nor Strome. Unless Gorton brings Luca Brassi with him, there are no deals to be had. Not for quite a while.

Sending Smith down will also bring along the need for another 7th defenseman. Want it to be Keane? Rykov?

Gross.

People just seem to think it's out of control and he should go over a probable 250k hold out.

He would kill it out there with this current group, this whole situation just blows.

lets hope you are wrong. that attitude, sign or sit is just wrong. the art of the deal is give and take. meet in the middle. give 925. ask 1.7 agree at 1.4 and move on.

that defense without ADA is gonna be lacking the best playmaker from the back end.look at ADA's numbers last 35 games or so, he was a machine both 5v5 and on the PP.

soften means find some money to give him his 1.4 and lets move forward. its doable.

If we send Smith down, which of the kids do you want sitting as the 7th dman? We have very little cap flexibility as it is. I'm not inclined to make things even tighter to accommodate ADA. We are going to have to pay performance bonuses too, so every dollar we save now is one that won't be charged against next year's cap.

If Tony plays his cards right, he could get a much better contract next summer when he is eligible for arbitration. But instead, it seems he wants to go all in on a pair of jacks.

It's also the cheapest option since they'd still be on the hook for over $3m of his hit if he's in Hartford, plus they'd have to pay for a replacement D/F. Just keeping him here helps save that extra few hundred thousand, which isn't insignificant considering the semi-bind we're in currently.

No one thinks anything is out of control. People are pointing out that he is not doing his career any favors.

And again, when you send Smith down to create $300k, which of Rykov or Keane are you preventing from developing as you are keeping one as a 7th defenseman?

It's going to be a shame if we lose this kid. Fox looks good but should be super sheltered for the greater benefit of the team. Fox on the third pair would be great 1st year development for him.

Hopefully he signs soon, we're a deeper and better team with him. That's what I'm into.

I take ADA over Joey Keane all day. Keane can go run HFD D.
