We need at least 500k to work with during the season, and every penny we save matters because we are likely to have performance bonuses to pay out. Whatever we can't pay off this year rolls over to next year's cap.
Yes, there is some flexibility regarding the team composition. We could send Smith down and keep Rykov, for example, and save 150k, but that isn't a great option IMO. I don't want Rykov as the 7th dman. He needs to play. Smith is a great option for the 7th dman spot because we don't care if he ever plays, and he can play LD, RD or 4th line if needed.
