On his latest podcast Charlie still thinks Walker gets traded but he does think Ristolainen’s injury could have created a more plausible possibility that he isn’t now.

He thinks the base of a trade return is likely a second rounder or a prospect of similar value. He just doesn’t realistically think he gets back a first rounder unless something crazy was to happen. He talked about lesser heralded defensemen getting moved over time for that time of value in the eyes of the NHL people they were generally guys that player over 20 minutes a night year to year. Like a Savard or even Ristolainen. Walker’s never averaged over 20 minutes a night in his career & even this year where he’s saw an increase he’s still ultimately under that mark now. He didn’t advocate for that logic but was stating that’s generally how NHL front office people still think in these type of things.

I wonder if Briere could be savy and get a 2025 or 2026 1st instead of a 2024 2nd.

Up here they are saying Walker is viewed highly and could get a 1st, but more likely a 2nd+ another add on. Leafs are interested but don't have 2nds available so might have to overpay to get him. But leafs really don't want to trade their 1st this year for anyone.

Can't look at this at its face value, while I am in the "there will be no moves" camp. This seems very much like a leak to get some teams moving on the phones. The other angle on this is if they are serious about trying to resign him in the off-season it would be good to have some idea of what the Walker camp is thinking.

DiMarco reporting through the 32 thoughts pod again.

Elliotte says the thinking has definitely changed and that if Walker will take low to mid 4’s they will sign him. They think if Walker is moved that it forces Drysdale into a spot he’s not ready for.

When you’re rebuilding, it’s ok to not be ready for everything you’re being asked to do! He’s 21, he doesn’t have to be!

Yeah, this seems way to specific. Oh "here is what he would be requesting if you wanted to sign long term after the trade"....

I am praying that's the case, because if we re-sign him, I have no hope for this club.

On one hand, Walker isn't ancient and a 3-year deal might be beneficial, but the odds are high that he regresses to his career mean for a lot more money than he's earning now.

And what's the upside? He's never providing excess value on that deal. If you need a #4 or #5 reliable defenseman when you're competing then just go sign one then. It's not exactly an impossible archetype to find.

This organization has demonstrably shown over decades now they don’t know how to sell at peak value on really any player nonetheless secondary & depth pieces. Briere learned under guys who pretty much had no clue when to walk away when they were ahead. Hell Dean Lombardi is still an advisor. That man wrote the book on not knowing how to walk away when you’re up. To the point he got himself fired because of it not long after winning multiple cups which pretty damn hard to in the NHL’s standards.

So yeah it could be leverage tactics but it every much could be if not more legit line of thinking which this organization doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt imo.

Someone has to go. You can't keep riding with 7 D every night.
