And if Avs draft MacKinnon, they will still need to get a very good defenseman i return for Stastny(+). There need to be a fit on the market, a team willing to trade a top defenseman to the Avs (might also need to agree to waive too). I find this to be a very tough task to do.

I think its easier to trade for a highend forward than defenseman. So IMO this is the Avs chance to draft a #1 defenseman.

False last time when true elite Centre was aquired off FA or by a trade was Joe Thornthon to Sharks. After than there have been fringe 1st line centers like Brad Richards. Elite high-end centers are most valuable asset for sure.

Or if they get a fantastic offer on Paul Stastny, allowing them to get rid of the potential log-jam they would have at C if they drafted MacKinnon.

Even if they can't trade Stastny for now, what are the chances they re-sign him long-term? IMO the center issue would sort itself out pretty quick.

But you dont see high end Dmen traded either. And Stats isnt exactly an elite center, so I dont see them getting a Dman for him that will be better than Jones.

Ryan Suter through FA, Chris Pronger after he was one of the biggest reasons they won the cup. There have been far less high-end #1 C traded than high-end #1 D's. It's very very hard to aquire true #1 C through the FA aswell.

My post isn't saying the Avs will trade Stastny, nor do I think they should. I think he'll turn around his offensive numbers under Patrick Roy, who will use him more to his strengths rather than in a more defensive role.

I dont disagree that top line centers are the toughest to acquire, Im just saying that true #1 Dmen are nearly quite as difficult, and showing Pronger and Suter as examples proves my point. #1 Dmen and top line, elite centers are the toughest to acquire, and for a lot of teams, acquiring them in the draft is the only option. For a team like the Panthers, they have never had an elite #1 centerman, which is why most of us desperately want MacKinnon.

Yeah, but do you see what the problem is here? You guys are Panthers fans who want MacKinnon, which automatically gives your arguments for why Colorado should draft Jones less credibility.

Plus, the crux of your argument is that Colorado should draft for positional need, which is something Colorado does not have a tendency to do anyway.

Me being a Panther fan, and wanting MacKinnon, is irrelevant to me, and to my "credibility." Would I be disappointing if the Avs draft Mac, sure, but Jones as a consolation prize works for me. There arent many teams that can have a future defense better than Jones, Kulikov, Gudbranson, Petrovic, and Matheson, in front of a young stud goaltender in Markstrom.

And as a Panther fan, I still think the Avs go for Jones, not because I want MacKinnon, but because I believe that Jones fits their needs the best. On top of that, who is to say that Jones isnt the on the top of their list, or other GMs for that matter. A lot of people still have Jones as the BPA, and I think MacKinnon's run in the MC only added his name along side Jones, not above it.

Hey Renegade, now that the dust has settled a little bit on the draft I was wondering if you could give us some of your thoughts of Seth Jones' future ? Will he make the Preds this year ? How will he fit in there ? Another year with Portland...then the 'A' ? (not sure if he's old enough for the 'A' after next season). Is the Predator team going to be a good fit for him ? Were you shocked to see him go 4th ? Thanks !!

Pretty good article on Jones.

Though Wings aren't in Central anymore.

The oversight or realignment was a small mistake but this Phrase is downright laughable
Finally, at No. 4, Nashville, a burgeoning franchise built on defense with a more skilled offensive core than the previous three teams
one of the three teams he was talking about is Tampa:shakehead There are 29 teams with a more skilled offensive core than the Predators.

His style reminds me of Alex Pietrangelo with Rob Blake's offensive command on the point offensively.

Bouwmeester is more smooth, cerebral with less offensive instincts or intensity.

Erik Johnson is clumsier and nowhere near as polished and talented offensively.

Pronger is meaner and not as elusive or quick. Pronger's ability to run a PP from the top is like Jones.

I think Jones is a special talent and could be a top defenseman in the NHL within 3 seasons..... emerging the way Karlsson and Subban have.

Subban. If he switched to forward then someone like Evander Kane.

Rob Blake comparison is the best from what I've seen.

What do the more experienced fans say about Larry Robinson as a comparison?

I think I'd like to take back my comparison of Rob Blake. Jones relies more on his skating and doesn't use his size the same way Blake did. He reminds me of Jay-bo but way more aggressive offensively.

Still wonder about the Larry Robinson comparo, I was pretty young when Robinson was still playing so I can't recall exactly but he seemed similar in style.
