Pretty wilde how many posters around here “didn’t see the potential” in Bode before this season. Anyone who watched him could and did tell you that his upside was through the roof.

I had him high in my ranking, but why did he drop so damn much? Everyone passed on him. And like matching that with McKenzies ranking, it seems quite clear that basically nobody wanted anything to do with him in the top 30...

And he was passed over by the US U20 team too. For camp right?

NHL teams are often very dumb. Look at the list of players who haven't been drafted or the list that made it to the second round that had no business being second rounders.

Wilde had a terrible WJC18, which is the biggest evaluation tournament for most draft-eligible players. It is also right before the draft, so its the last viewing teams have of these players. He had a good season, but had one terrible tournament in the last tournament of the season right before the draft. There were also a few questions about where he'd play hockey this season, which I think contributed to him dropping.

He was passed over for the USA WJC team and the camp, but they often leave off players who play in the OHL for worse college hockey players. There have also been rumors going back about a year that they weren't such big fans of him, despite having him on the NTDP roster and putting him in a big role for two seasons.

There were some legitimate questions about his hockey IQ and ability to play defense. And as others have said, he was pretty bad at the U18 and unfortunately that comprises a disproportionately large chunk of how NDTPers are ranked. But Wilde has always had #1D upside and no matter how remote the chance that they’ll hit it, those players should always be taken in the mid-late 1st over guys like Jared Bernard-Docker or Jay O’Brien.

Yeah I remember, but — hehe — I do think it was pretty much nonsense. IQ? I haven’t seen much IQ issues with him on the ice. He isn’t Nik Lidstrom II, but like neither is Dougie Hamilton. Nor many other Ds doing fairly well in this league.

He didn’t have a good U18? I especially don’t buy that. Like sure he didn’t put up pts and then was involved in some goals against, but he played in that tournament like he had all year. All teams had seen him for so many games at that point. A good scout knows what he have, and also knows that it’s a small sample size, everyone can end up in tricky situations etc. I don’t for a second think that pro scouts will share those knee jerk reactions we often se started by fans and then spread.

The couple times I've seen him live I could definitely see why people may question his hockey IQ. He needs to pick when he's joining the rush and being aggressive better. He also turns over the puck trying to make home run passes instead of making a simple outlet pass or carrying it out. I think he's fully aware of the kind of skill he has. He just needs to reign it in a bit.

That little scouting report sounds exactly like how i explained Madison Boweys game in junior... And its not surprising me what so ever that Bowey struggles at the NHL level

By no means am i suggesting they are similar players, i am just saying thats how i described Boweys game. I have never watched Wilde play

I think the puck-rushing tendencies of Wilde are a valid criticism, but the kid also has tremendous offensive skill. He has excellent puck control, playmaking and an elite wrist shot.

He’s a lot more offensively talented than these tremendous puck rushers who can’t do anything else.

Purely offensive dman are much more of a liability even though they can score. Look around the league, most of them are minus players.

I hated how Bowey played in junior (watched the Rockets because of Draisaitl) along with guys like Bittner and D.Strome. With prospects you have to imagine their pro projections and how their hockey sense translates. I thought Josh Morrissey was way underrated in his days in junior.

Ya i hated how Bowey played too. He constantly made head scratching decisions with the puck in his own end and his IQ was just awful. But he was able to make up for his mistakes at the junior level and was still able to put up impressive numbers. But i always despised his NHL potential

Who knows whether or not Bode will pan out. With his size and great skating ability definitely worth the risk in the second round. Not to many players at his size can skate so well.

Btw just an FYI Pulock really struggled with defense gap control you name it his first couple of years with the islanders. His offense was always really good but his defense was so shaky the islanders were afraid to play him. Now Pulock is not only our best offensive defenseman he’s become rock solid defensively.

Pulock's problems were never about decision making.

He struggled in the back end so much coaches were afraid to play him. He developed his defenseive game a lot under Trots to the point Trots plays him more then anyone else. This never would have been the case under Weight. Pulock main problem probably was always skating which is ok now but he was a train wreck at times defensively. The improvement is night and day.

The biggest asstet any islanders defensive prospect has right now is Barry Trotz. The guy turns out defenseman on a assembly line.
It is crazy how I went from thinking "this kid better develop properly before Capuano/Weight gets ahold of him"

to

"Meh, Trotz will improve his defensive game"

I love that man

No, you misunderstand. Pulock's decision making and defense at the junior level were not an issue. Meanwhile, Wilde's is a problem at the junior level already, now, today.

As Pulock moved up to the pro ranks, he had to adjust to the speed of the decision making required at the AHL and NHL levels. He needed to learn better positional defensive structure, and gap control to minimize speedier players from taking advantage of his lack of mobility. It wasn't a problem for him in the WHL, but it became one as a pro. Thompson and Trotz have helped with this, but experience overall has helped as well. His issues were always correctable.

As Wilde moves up, his issues will only be exacerbated. If he struggles with decision making now, as the pace speeds up at higher levels, he will really struggle. You can't fix that necessarily, you can only hope to shelter it.

As an example, Jack Johnson always got by on his physical tools alone, and always struggled with decision making. At the NTDP, U-18s, WJCs, and at Michigan. Look at his NHL career now.

That's your comparable for Wilde and the types of issues he has now as a junior player with top notch physical tools and poor decision making.

They can always make him a winger?

Thats what we said about Sean Day:sarcasm:. But in all honesty Wilde is a guy that scares me a bit as a Rangers fan, if he pans out he could be dangerous. Not sure i love the move to the OHL though. Almost a step down in competition playing vs NCAA teams last year to OHL this year

I wanted him to go to Michigan so bad. Would have been tough but definitely worth it. Still, it’s hard to argue he made the wrong choice. He’s playing a lot of games in a pro atmospher and is having a tremendous season.
