His defensive struggles and mental lapses were not confined to the IIHF 18s. It was a horrid tournament for him - an outlier that wasn't truly representative of his abilities - but most of the red flags he exhibited in the tournament were present throughout his time with the NTDP.
It's exciting that Wilde is doing so well in the OHL offensively, but it's not really that unexpected as he's got a lot of offensive talent. He's in a similar position as Adam Boqvist in my opinion - another player doing well offensively in the OHL as expected, but the offensive story isn't what folks were concerned about in the first place.
I don't say any of that to temper the excitement of Islander fans as Wilde is a great value to have in your organization with a second round pick. He's got size and skill and if he puts it all together, folks will look back and say how did he slip to #41? But if he doesn't pan out, the reasons won't be all that surprising and 26 games in the OHL don't erase 2 years of red flags.
