RD Bode Wilde (2018, 41st, NYI)

I hope Wilde is very good on offense. Defense can be taught plus the knocks on Morgan Reilly and Dumba were all on defense and they turned out well.
He has incredible raw tools. If he can put it all together he'll be a beast.

I like the Carlson comparison. The first year I started paying attention the the OHL Carlson absolutely dominated on the knights. I think Carlson might have been a bit better defensively. I do believe Wilde’s defensive criticism is a bit over blown. He had an awful tournament last year and it stuck in people’s minds. I have faith in Trotz ability to coach him up and teach him to be better defensively. His size, skating ability, and offensive skill and instincts make him a rare and exciting talent on the blue line.

I thought if all goes right his ceiling was Brent Burns. I know it’s unlikely that he may reach that but that’s the ceiling imo and who he reminds me of.

It was more than just one tournament.

Don't fall for the PB Kool-Aid.

I watched him play for the USDP and didn’t think he was bad defensively. Offense and carrying the puck were his bread and butter but I never felt he was a defensive liability. He needs work but I’d argue he’s nowhere near as bad as Bouchard in his own end.

Not many are.

I'd also say that Bouchard's offensive hockey IQ is way better though. I'm not a huge fan of either player TBH.

I attended almost every home game Wilde played for the NTDP over two seasons. Yes, he was bad defensively. He constantly made poor decisions and was out of position. He showed a lot of promise offensively, but his defense needed a great deal of work -- he was a liability out there. I have not seen him play at all for Saginaw this season, so cannot say if he's improved in this area.

In Plymouth? Well then I guess I must have been watching mostly road games because I did not see a defensive liability

I have a new theory why Wilde never got any consideration to play for USA, he either banged somebody's wife or daughter high up in Hockey USA.
No similarity in nationality really although U.S. and Canada are brotherly countries. Unlike Carlson
Bode Wilde was actually born in Canada.

Next season you think?

Wilde likely returns to the OHL next year, the Isles can be patient with him and Dobson as well.

Pulock and Mayfield have taken big strides in their games under Trotz and Boychuk is healthy again and has returned to his usual solid self. On top of that, Rathgeb in the AHL has some promise too as depth.

The RD situation for the Isles is probably the biggest strength of the organization.

Will he benefit from returning to the OHL? I think it was Pronman who recently said he talked to some OHL scouts who think Wilde is the best defensemen in the league. Wouldn't that tell the Islanders that he needs a bigger challenge next season?

He could've played in the AHL this season. I think too many people consider his draft position, and think that means its going to take him 4-5 years to reach the NHL. He's one of the best defensemen from his draft. It wouldn't make sense that he should be playing in such a weak league another season. Most of the other best defensemen from his draft will likely be in the NHL next season.

I disagree that Wilde wouldn't benefit from another season in the OHL next year. His offensive skills are obvious, he can always refine his defensive game and decision making. He needs reps and he'll get them at Saginaw, maybe Team USA gets their heads out of their asses and he gets a shot at next year's WJC? There are always new challenges.

If the Isles feel that he's ready for the AHL, so be it. I assume his ELC would slide a 2nd time if he doesn't play the minimum NHL games so no harm there. I think he would also still be expansion draft exempt as well. With the RD situation at the NHL level and Rathgeb (who has some promise) already in the AHL, I don't see the rush to accelerate his development. I think it's irrelevant if his peers will be in the NHL or not next year, they are not Isles prospects so they have no impact on his path to the NHL. Dobson is a factor in this regard, but he likely is back in the Q next year.

Pretty wilde how many posters around here “didn’t see the potential” in Bode before this season. Anyone who watched him could and did tell you that his upside was through the roof.

Questions about his hockey IQ and perceived character issues seemed to really hurt his stock. I thought Brian Lawton's rambling on it during the Draft telecast was pretty classless on his part, but the kid had some red flags during that hyper sensitive time. Seems to have worked out great for the Isles.

Wilde definitely had (and has!) some red flags, but the fact that he clearly had (has!) first pairing defenseman potential should have made someone pick him much earlier than he was picked.

He was still a risk and could have fallen even further than the Isles at #41 considering they already had drafted Dobson at #12. The decision to double dip on high end RD's looks like a great move in hindsight. Considering the value that RD's carry, it was a smart gamble.

I'm Wilde for Bode.

Hopefully USA doesn't make the same mistake again next year.

TAKE BODE
