If Mikko rejects it, he will be the most sought after UFA at the deadline.

Kypreos said it's possible Rantanen goes back to Colorado this summer.

I think Rantanen is going to feel too emotional/disturbed by the Colorado negotiations/trade to be rushed into signing with Carolina.

Feels like Hurricanes need to approach this with a soft touch to get it done—and instead there has already been too much brinkmanship through the media.

In the last couple days we’ve now seen leaked what they are offering or heard that they may yet flip him if he doesn’t sign.

Feels like they are trying to nudge him with a sledgehammer.

Jets should be in on him as a pure rental if he doesn't sign that. Would be hilarious to have him on our roster if we get Colorado in the playoffs

Only as a rental? He's a franchise player. I'd sign him long term and trade Ehlers for him at the deadline as the main piece coming back to Carolina.

Whats the max you can get next year ?
It's 20% right?

So 20% of $95.5M = $19.1M

I don't think Rantanen can take that kind of number. But he can set a new precedent for the next tier if he wants to. Like in the $14-15M tier? Which will still temporarily put him #1 in the league.

McDavid is going to blast past all that if he wants to with the first $20M AAV next year.

They would be insane to offer him anything close to that contract. They should take a chance and ride him into the playoffs while he is chasing a contract. Cup windows do not stay open for long and this year its definitely up for grabs this year. Gotta take your shots even if its risky.

I think Rantanen misses his buddies in Colorado. He never wanted to leave.

As a hab fans that hasn't seen top end talent for the Habs really I'd be fine with them offering him 15, 15.5 a year for 7

...while I don't think he's gonna be worth his MASSIVE contract, he's 28, not 38... :biglaugh:

Im aware. The prime years of a hockey player are roughly 23-28.

Its not uniform. Rantanen may well be a dominant player until he’s 35.

Its still a rather massive risk.

Now, the nice thing is this is Carolina we’re talking about, and their entire philosophy up to this point has been establishing a player’s value and refusing to pay more than a dollar over that number.

So, of any team, Carolina can surely find a way to fit Rantanen and maintain a potent roster, even if/when Rantanen’s on-ice value dips below his cap value.
