Trades & Free Agency Thread: 2024-2025 - Trade Deadline Approaches

Need to jettison Robertson, Holmberg, and Domi off this team. They’re all useless slugs. Would’ve rather we overpaid Bertuzzi instead of getting Domi on a “deal.” Better yet should’ve brought back neither.

Finding a team to retain on Brayden Schenn @ $6.5 m for 4 years is going to prove to be impossible imo. You see teams retain for 1-2 years. Maybe 3 but even that is rare. Retaining for 4 years is significant. It would cost more than a 1st just for the retention. The Brayden Schenn rumor was never logical. I’ll never say never but it seems very unlikely.

I know it's not likely but what would it take to get Robert Thomas from the Blues? He's signed for 8.5M until 2030, so it would be almost impossible to fit under the cap. But he's the perfect 2nd line center fur us going forward. He's still young, a strong two-way player who has become an excellent faceoff guy. He's also a right shot, which gives us balance in the circle, and Berube is very familiar with him. I'd move both Cowan and Minten and a pick to get him at least.

Kampf + Jarnkrok + Cowan + Minten + 2026 1st to St. Louis
 
Too many anchors right now, Domi / Holmberg / Robertson don’t bring anything to the team right now.. If they aren’t scoring they are useless. I’m actually fine with Holmberg being the 4C over Kampf, but he’s in over his head trying to be the 3C.

Time for Treliving to earn his paycheck and get a 3rd line center & winger if Jarnkrok can’t play.

I’m not expecting a scoring updrive with Jarnkrok, but he’s much more of a NHL player then Robertson / Reaves.

We can add him without retention if somebody goes the other way - Kampf possibly.

Adding him actually makes a big difference for our roster construction. With Matthews-Tavares-Schenn down the middle you can mix and match with your 3 skilled RWs (Marner, Nylander, Domi) and your big bodied LWs (Knies, McMann, Pacioretty)

Pacioretty-Tavares-Marner
McMann-Schenn-Nylander

On the blueline, I would probably prefer someone like Brian Dumoulin. He’d be relatively cheap, even with retention, and I think he’s the perfect partner for Rielly.

I ran the numbers a few weeks ago for a 6 million dollar player and it worked by trading (or using LTIR) for Kampf, Reaves, jarnkrok, Dewar and Hakanpaa. They would have to run with a 20 man roster. Not sure if they would do that though.

That's true. Knee jerk reactions aren't a smart thing to do. Berube actually needs to stick with shit though

#3C and RHD or just let it roll and hope our goalies can win it for you. Lose and I'd say blow it up but we all know it will not happen while 34 is here.

Tre's been here for almost two years and his only trade acquisitions have been Edmundson, Boosh and Dewar and all we have left is Dewar. Underwhelming to say the least for a guy who supposedly is always inquiring (I did not count Tanev for a 6th before July 1 because Tanev was coming here July 1)..

I tend to think that you'll end up being right. It would be a long retention period.
 
If the Leafs re-sign JT, which all indications point to… Hopefully they can bring the AAV even lower with some deferred money.

They might all unofficially pause to give the spotlight to the tournament but I don't think it's officially a thing. They'll probably also take time off for those not participating or involved as well.
