That only means something to some fans. Players understand this is their livelihood and they don't begrudge a guy because he took more money. Do you think anybody on the Rangers holds any ill will to Lundqvist because he didn't take less money? No because that's not how the vast majority of players think.

Depends on what your goals are .... not every player only cares about the bottom dollar ... happiness, comfort and success play a factor.

i love everything about this. i hope Cally has last minute thoughts and takes the same road Girardi did. I mean I just can't see it being easy for him to leave this team. He won't be playing under the bright lights of MSG in NYC. He'll be on some basement dweller team that will never be recognized. When he knows something special can happen here, and he would be a God in his hometown.

But I'm glad Girardi decided to stick around for the next few seasons at a low cost. If Cally leaves I hope they give him the C. He's earned it. This news made my day

he left money on the table...we all know it.

That's proving that "he wants to be here"

do you see Cally leaving this kinda money on the table?

unlikely
.

the only reason that its unlikely because most likely this could be Callahan's last real deal to cash in and you think he does not know that.. imagine if a team offers 6 or 7 years and him being hurt at least once a season, maybe Callahan's thinking is that he knows that and his body might not last long so maybe that is why he has asking for a lot in demands.

Girardi has 4 season where he played all 82 games.. and missed 2 games in the 10-11 season. where Callahan 81 games in 08-09 season, 77 games 09-10 and 76 games in 11-12 season...

G is an ironman and someone who is a leader on the team.

Good contract. Happy you are still a Ranger Dan. :handclap:

A 2nd pairing versatile forward who has never hit 30 goals should not be asking for that much more than a top pairing shutdown defenseman.

Maybe Girardi Rozsival's over the length of this contract, but that still makes him a useful 2nd-3rd pairing guy. Callahan's injury history means you don't know if he'll hit 20 goals ever again.

Girardi plays a minimalistic game, and is one of the most durable players I've ever seen. I love this deal. He should be the next Captain, no doubt.

Fair contract with the expectation that the cap will keep rising but I wish he brought just a little bit more offense.

He still puts in 25 +/- points a year, which gets him into the top-60 defenders lists every year. So even his offensive production still makes him a 1st pair. His D puts him into the top-30.

Great contract.

The headline for this thread is a bit sensationalist for my liking but ill bite.

Use Dustin Brown's recent contract as a comparable for Callahan. I think 5.5 for some number of years is a fair number for Cally and NYR as Cally is good player but a notch below Dustin Brown in terms of skill IMO.

Girardi is an anchor to our blueline and a great player, but he is a very prototypical stay at home defenseman. He does not have great outlet vision and his shot is very inaccurate. Somewhere in the 5-5.5 mill range seems appropriate.

Hand Hank a blank check and hope he doesn't bend us over a barrel. He earns every dollar of what he gets and then some.

Just for a comparable, to show how much of a pay increase these 3 would get if we were to resign all 3 to my proposed deals.

Callahan: 4.3 --> 5.5 = $1.2 mil
Girardi: 3.3 --> 5.3 = $2 mil
Lundqvist: 6.875 --> 8.5 = $1.625 mil
Total $14.475 mill --> 19.3 mill = $4.825 raise

Considering the cap is expected to go up to around 70 million, and we are more than likely going to buyout Richards next summer, i think this is pretty reasonable.

I guess 2 for 3 isn't so bad

Very good deal. G always struck me as the kind of player that wasn't greedy. Took a discount as far as cap hit, in exchange for long-term security. He could easily have gotten over 6 per on the open market.

Now, to figure out what to do with Cally.

Good deal. Certainly not a steal, but a really good value contract for a very important Ranger.

Would love to see Staal signed to a similar deal (better player, more injury concerns) and have the 'big 3' on D locked up long term along with Hank

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun 30s

Further to @DarrenDreger, Girardi deal includes full NMC in first 3 yrs and modified NTC in final 3

This is the key, hopefully it's max front loaded too. The deal will take him to 35, I wouldn't have minded a longer deal with lower AAV.

Happy Friday.

Awesome contract, great player took a discount.

Girardi is a more valuable player than Callahan (don't even need to think twice). Just goes to show you how pathetic Callahans demands are.

good terms. we had to give one extra year to get them. not hot about full NMC/NTC but will have to wait to see the details. If the last 3 years are like limited 8-teams list partial NTC then that's perfectly cool. I hate how NTCs screw teams in trades (see Nash, Rick) unless of course you are the one benefiting from the hamstrung GM (see Nash, Rick)

Good for Girardi and good for Sather for caving in. Gladly take this guy for 6 more years. Should be wearing at least an A the rest of the way.

Bad luck Girardi. Signed as an undrafted rookie, earns notoriety and respect among peers and hockey world through shot blocking, toughness, and shut down defense, and finally earns career contract.

Over shadowed by Ryan Miller's impending trade within 2 hours.
