Yup. The modified NTC on the back end plus the $5.5MM AAV makes the deal a no-brainer.

IMO Girardi clearly wanted to stay in NYC.

Yep, he has his family living here with his son growing up. You would think he is trying to convince Callahan...and Callahan has been my favorite Ranger and the only authentic jersey I have atm, but I kinda want him traded to open up a RW slot for a prospect and keep everything else the same.

Ecstatic with this deal. Girardi is as solid as they come and with McDonagh and Klein signed longterm this is a very solid defensive corps. If Staal can stay healthy and gets locked up, that's one of the best top four in the league for a good chunk of the future, and balanced. Only issue is scoring there.

Back to Girardi. Great terms that will look better as the cap goes up. For the most part, management has done a very good job with in house contracts. There's a possibility this changes Callys mind but how I feel about that is a different story... Glad they locked up the G-man, congrats to him.

Maybe not, and if the cap keeps rising, this isn't too bad. Personally, I don't think he's worth $5 million. He's a solid defensive defenseman, but he's slow and he's really not very good offensively. His shot is totally inaccurate, he's an average passer. I think he leaves a lot to be desired in terms of the breakout, and he lacks vision and creativity. I'm not trashing the guy; I like him for what he is. He's a very dependable body who blocks shots and clears the front of the net like few others.

I'm glad he'll be with the team, I just don't necessarily agree with the sentiment that this is a value deal. Relative to what he might have gotten in free agency, perhaps, but not relative to his ability.

I'd say you can also look at the impact this may have on the team. When teammates see a veteran leader take less, when they know damn well the guy can hit the market and get more, it sends the right message and creates the right kind of culture and atmosphere.

Girardi logs a lot of tough minutes. He's missed a mere 4 games the last 7 seasons. You look at that and you know the dude is playing through injuries and pain at times. The players see his character in what he goes through and they see it in how he plays. Then they see him take less than they know he can get on the open market and see his character as a guy who buys into the team.

For what this guy brings to the team, for how durable he's been including this season, for the minutes he can log, for the message he sends to his teammates of taking less to play in NY, to how hard he would have realistically been to replace, even down to the message from the organization that we'll give our own veterans a solid long-term deal if it seems fair for both sides, this really is a great deal. Especially with a rising cap.

I don't get this. If he was good at one or two of the things you say he isn't good at, he'd be worth closer to $7m. He's a $5m defenseman specifically because he can't do those things.

Couldn't be happier to have G back at that price. He left at least 500k per on the table.

Great to see that my favorite player is willing to take about a million less than he would have gotten in free agency for the sake of the team. Meanwhile, everyone's else's favorite overrated captain wants 1.5M more per year than Girardi and an extra year, while he probably should be getting less money and years than Girardi.

Make this guy the captain. He's a real leader. He has the same intangibles that Callahan has, and is willing to take less money for the sake of the team.

The Girardi hate will continue in a few days. There will be people whining that he doesn't put up enough points and doesn't skate well enough. Its good though for a day that everyone can agree that the Rangers and Girardi made a deal that was critical to the success of the team for at least the next few years. I couldn't be happier with this deal.

Happy with the term. Girardi could've gotten something like 7/42 on the market so he left almost 10 mill on the table.

This news certainly helped me going to work 5 o'clock this morning in a somewhat good mood. Sweet, lovely deal.

Very pleased about this.

Defensive defensemen are oftened maligned in the NYC market, but you cannot win a championship without them.

It's a fine deal, really trying to replace Girardi would have been difficult, but I Hope he continues to work on his play with the puck in the defensive zone. I think he's gotten better under AV but being able to make plays in his own end with the puck will determine whether he has some more longevity in the NHL or by the end of this contract if he's a bottom pairing guy.

I think he does a great job making little passes to move the puck away from opposing players in the defensive zone, but struggles with longer passes and breakout passes. However, if he can keep making those good short passes then I"m happy. The key for defensemen these days, even defensive defensemen, is being able to regain possession and keep it, so a guy who just throws the puck up the boards all the time or makes poor passes to his teammates is going to hurt you even if he is good without the puck

Congrats to G on the new contract. Excellent signing, and one that helps the Rangers for a long time.

25 minute top pair shutdown RHD are hard to come by. Fair deal for both sides.

G wants to stay, his NMC kicked in yesterday. Rangers also got a fair deal since its an NMC for the first 3 years and a NTC the next 3, so there is some flexibility in case he breaks down (which I don't think he will under this contract).

$5.5M is a great cap hit, G would have gotten post-lockout III money as UFA. For top line forwards 8.5 is the new 7. For top defensemen that bar hasn't been set yet, and Girardi had the opportunity to be the guy that sets that bar.

If second pair defensmen with offensive upside like James Wisnieski and Dennis Wideman broke 5.25 as post lockout II UFAs, Girardi would have easily broken 6 since cap growth is a virtual certainty now.

It's true, but the 400's sections did manage to run the last one we had out of town prematurely.

Great, great, great contract. Top pairing locked in long-term with a very manageable cap hit.

Cally, just take the 6x6. There was no reason to gut the 2010-12 team, it just needed to be tweeked. Now we have a great chance to go forward with the core intact, supplemented by players like Brassard and Klein that only make the team better.

Not unless he stays a 1st pairing defenseman for the rest of his years and wins a couple of cups, and even then numbers being retired as usually reserved for guys who scored a lot

Girardi is a D-man, so they won't be looking at his scoring to determine that. Horwell, Giacomin, Bathgate and Gilbert didn't win a Cup with the Rangers but got their number retired.

I honestly think Girardi and Lundqvist are possibilities to get their numbers retired, with or without a Cup

I'd say Lundqvist is pretty much a lock. Girardi den get there if the Rangers win a Cup or he is the captain for a longer stretch.

It's a definite discount compared to what he would have drawn in fa. But it's still a slight overpayment based on what he actually brings. Id say by a year and 500k. But its ok to do that in order to keep a player who has been synonymous with the organization and also still playing well

Love this news! He should be the next Captain. Just a great great story, this lad Dan Girardi. Looking forward to seeing him get even better, now that finally he's in a system we can call total hockey.

I think Lundqvist is a lock to have his number retired. I doubt anyone else on the current team. Maybe Staal or Mcdonagh if they stay lifelong Rangers and win a cup. But Rangers are known for being notoriously stingy in terms of retiring numbers.

Back on topic - great signing for Girardi. I think he'll be good for first 4-5 years and after that a veteran presence type of defenseman.
