I am sure during the course of the interviews with Boston Chiarelli told Bruins officials whom he would target in free agency, and his other plans for how he would rebuild, continue to build the team. I'm sure this contributed to Boston hiring him. But Boston was told by the league that Chiarelli still had to finish his contract with Ottawa until July 15th. That he could not work for Boston until then.
Boston hired Chiarelli knowing what his suggestions and targets would be, but someone else actually had to execute the plan until Chiarelli would be able to take over. Which is why I said he had given insight and approval to certain things.
Do you really think that the Jacobs would risk penalties - fines, possible loss of draft picks by violating league rules? Do you think Chiarelli would want to risk his first GM gig by getting caught? If they did violate league rules and got away with it, well, that sounds like cheating and conspiracy theory. Did they ever say they did? Because I don't recall.
As far as the players he brought in later, I mentioned those players in a later post. Chiarelli's time in Boston was not without his own mistakes, i.e. Dave Lewis, to name one early on. Thank God, for Claude Julien.
Sweeney made mistakes early on too, but has since done a very good job with what he's had to work with. People want to jump all over him for those early mistake but seldom give him credit for the good things he has done. I guess winning a cup covers a multitude of sins. He has put together two, possibly three, cup worthy teams since he took over. Lack of a cup hurts, but doesn't mean he hasn't been successful otherwise at what he does.
