It's a definite discount compared to what he would have drawn in fa. But it's still a slight overpayment based on what he actually brings. Id say by a year and 500k. But its ok to do that in order to keep a player who has been synonymous with the organization and also still playing well

Agree, same with Cally even at 6x5 years. Blood is still worth something but it has it's limits.

Not sure I see Girardi as captain. Not opposed to it, just not sure I see him wearing the C.

Girardi is absolutely a leader in the locker room so he could be the captain.

The problem here is people sour on players who give boring interviews apparently. G can be pretty sardonic sometimes so maybe he'll get a pass? Who knows. Whoever gets the C will be largely ridiculed whenever the team loses a couple of games in a row no matter who it is.

Girardi can and should be the next captain. He's the longest tenured skater and is almost always on the ice, which is important in a team leader.

Staal isn't signed after next year and is frequently injured, and he's pretty much the only other option.

I don't like it. Too much money, too long of a contract. Girardi is too one dimensional for that kind of money. $5.5 for a defensive defenseman who can't move the puck just looks iffy. But that's what cap inflation does I guess.

So in another couple of years this league will be on another lockdown, because their owners are dumber than cotton and greedier than... well, they don't have to be greedier than they already are, actually. Why exactly has this league been closed down twice in short succession, only to see the cap reach previous levels - every time? So they can overpay eachother until they can't and the house starts crumbling - again? And somehow everybody else but them should pay for the consequences of their erratic decisions?

Beautiful. He's an asset even if he declines. I was hoping they'd frontload this. He's definitely movable at the back end, even if you need to retain some salary (which will be insignificant as the cap goes up). Cap hit isn't severe, either. Great deal all around for the Rangers.

The Rangers did the same thing with Rozsival in 2008. 4 years/$20M. $13M paid out in the first 2 years. $4M in year 3 and $3M in year 4. Rozsival was traded in year 3.

The contract breakdown makes the deal even better.

Definitely. They got this one right. I also appreciate this deal more now that the aftershock of Callahan actually departing has sunk in. G, seemingly, was a lot more content to simply be playing with the Rangers and didn't try to rake us over the coals for a contract he couldn't live up to. You could argue he took a decent discount off his July price and you could also argue that his role here is more important than Cally's, despite the C. It makes it really easy to respect G a ton.

Agreed.

G wanted to stay.

Callahan wanted to get paid.

Honest question: Where does Capgeek get these numbers? Do they have connections to the league?

Sather did a nice job with that contract. And I thank Girardi for taking such a team-friendly deal.
