Girardi could have gotten more as a free agent. The Rangers gave him a lot. At least,Girardi is durable. Not like Callahan.

definitely took a discount. There's gotta be a team this summer looking for a top-liner that wouldve paid way more.

Only makes you like the guy more, it that's even possible

Anyone who doesn't think he is worth it ... think twice ... he would have banked a lot more in the open market (especially with the FA crop out there) ... makes me think he actually cares about WINNING more than a few extra bucks.

i dont anticipate defenseman like him making less on the open market going forward. i think its good value for girardi and its rare to say that about a free agent to be, especially one that would have been one of the best players available on the open market.

Maybe not, and if the cap keeps rising, this isn't too bad. Personally, I don't think he's worth $5 million. He's a solid defensive defenseman, but he's slow and he's really not very good offensively. His shot is totally inaccurate, he's an average passer. I think he leaves a lot to be desired in terms of the breakout, and he lacks vision and creativity. I'm not trashing the guy; I like him for what he is. He's a very dependable body who blocks shots and clears the front of the net like few others.

I'm glad he'll be with the team, I just don't necessarily agree with the sentiment that this is a value deal. Relative to what he might have gotten in free agency, perhaps, but not relative to his ability.

Good deal.

Glad they are keeping this D together which has looked great. Lack of a full NMC in the last 3 years is nice too.

Very happy about this!

Very good news. It's a good deal for a solid guy. The modified movement terms in the final three years also show some foresight.

for comparison,

Phaneuf's numbers:

LENGTH: 7 YEAR(S) VALUE: $49,000,000 TYPE: STANDARD EXPIRY STATUS: UFA SOURCE: CapGeek
SEASON AHL SALARY NHL SALARY P. BONUSES S. BONUS AAV CAP HIT
2014-15 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0 $3,500,000 $7,000,000 $7,000,000
2015-16 $8,000,000 $8,000,000 $0 $2,000,000 $7,000,000 $7,000,000
2016-17 $7,500,000 $7,500,000 $0 $1,000,000 $7,000,000 $7,000,000
2017-18 $7,000,000 $7,000,000 $0 $1,000,000 $7,000,000 $7,000,000
2018-19 $6,500,000 $6,500,000 $0 $1,000,000 $7,000,000 $7,000,000
2019-20 $6,500,000 $6,500,000 $0 $1,000,000 $7,000,000 $7,000,000
2020-21 $5,500,000 $5,500,000 $0 $2,500,000 $7,000,000 $7,000,000

That's a great deal, considering Phaneuf got pretty FA money by the team he ALREADY played for.

The first is a thing.

The second is not.

The only value there is is what it's costing us to have you on the team versus what it would cost to have another player like you. There is only value relative to the market for the player. Is Clarkson overpaid for his ability? Heck yes, but he's also clearly overpaid for what it should cost to have any number 45 point (or better) wingers on your team. This contract is good value. No team was going to get Girardi for less and as the cap rises it will only get better. Our top pair barely costs 10M together.

Guy may well be a career Ranger. Longest tenured save Henrik.

That's one piece of business down, and the terms aren't horrible.

I think in a few years as he probably slows down or hopefully the Rangers upgrade, $5.5 mill per season wont' be bad for a dependable 2nd pairing guy either. Seems like a "flexible" cap hit in terms of how it will be perceived as the cap goes up

Makes me wonder what the plan with Stralman will be though...sign him? Trade him? let him walk and try to get someone with more offense int here?

Good deal and glad it's done. Fair contract on both sides, not an overpayment or a true underpayment, if anything, it probably is more of an underpayment, someone would have probably thrown him 6x6.5 if he made UFA. Made my day to see this for sure.

I do think he left some potential money on the table to stay here. Kudos on that front, I won't forget it. Could be a candidate for Captaincy.

Couldn't find a GIF of this, so the video will have to do.

Little too long, but great deal. Still is going to suck to see Cally leave.
