This was likely posted somewhere on this board already but with Poehling now gone that's another 1st round Habs pick out the door.
MB inherited Subban and Markov, then added Petry. They were backed up by Price. All we needed was some damn offense at centre. Christ what a waste.
Emelin was quite OK. The problem was letting him go and then trying to replace him with a series of guys who ranged from decent third pairing players to bad third line players on their best days. There is a big difference between playing second pairing minutes and third pairing minutes, ice time and quality of competition. We had for 2-3 years a very good defense with Subban-Markov-Petry and then Weber-Markov-Petry. Price was the major reason we won but the defense in front of him was actually more than decent. Even if Price is back to his usual self next season people should not expect miracle with the defense we have. Our best dman next season would not make the top 3 we used to have some years ago and while Emelin had its limitations he was at least elite at something so not sure i'd say the best dman we have atm is much better than him.
Cant believe that guy is still employed. What was the point of not moving those damn picks and prospects. Guys like Oshie, Perron, Smith, Kessel, Oreilly, Hamilton and Teravaunen were traded for freaking peanuts. PEANUTS.MB inherited Subban and Markov, then added Petry. They were backed up by Price. I'm not surprised we didn't get a huge return. Petry is 34yo. And Poehling was barely a 4C at 23yo on one of the worse team in history.
We did get a huge return, we got a defenseman putting up similar numbers who is 6 years younger coming off his best year. This is a great f***ing deal. And he’s a local
kid!
It's going to be interesting to see what kind of player Matheson is at this point of his career. Which is almost certainly his prime, or close to it.
Ok he can skate, and word is he can rush the puck up ice. But is a 20 point dman, a 30 points dman? How good is he defensively? Etc...

He’s clearly a 30 point dman and all he needs to be is better than Petry who was f***ing putrid half of the year last year and clearly had no interest in playing here anymore. Plus we get a guy who is 6 years younger.
I’d also add that I see Matheson as more valuable than a late first rounder by a mile. People here want draft picks but how many picks do you want? We need f***ing soldiers in the lineup.
Not sure what people were expecting 34 year old dmen to be worth with the Mcdonagh and Burns trades… we got the best deal of the bunch!
...he's, again, very similar to a young Petry defensively...as in he isn't very good at it and has a penchant for boneheaded plays...
After watching Scandella up close, I'll wait to watch Matheson up close.
We'll see if and by how much he's better than Scandella.

The only assets from the Bergevin regime we still have are Anderson, Dvorak, Hoffman, Byron, Armia, Savard, Edmundson, Barron, Evans, Drouin, Allen, Pezzeta, Primeau, Ylonen, Dach, Harris, 2019, 2020 and 2021 draft picks.
One core player (Caufield.)
He turned Subban, Price, Pacioretty, Gallagher, a 3rd Oa pick, Eller into this lmao.
And like Petry (and Kulak) started to improve in that regard beginning his mid-twenties....he's, again, very similar to a young Petry defensively...as in he isn't very good at it and has a penchant for boneheaded plays...
Petry improved his offensive game, he’s still inconsistent defensively. And like Petry (and Kulak) started to improve in that regard beginning his mid-twenties.
Loved Emelin but it was the expansion draft and he had to exposed.Emelin was quite OK. The problem was letting him go and then trying to replace him with a series of guys who ranged from decent third pairing players to bad third line players on their best days. So the Matheson contract at age 28 is better than both the others right now.Petry improved his offensive game, he’s still inconsistent defensively.
Kulak is a tire fire, but last season was a bit better.
Quite possible but he also had to be replaced by someone who could handle the job. I suppose Chiarot and Edmundson got there eventually.Loved Emelin but it was the expansion draft and he had to exposed.
No he didn't. He was left exposed so we could protect Jordie Benn as our 3D.Loved Emelin but it was the expansion draft and he had to exposed.
It’s still bad tbh. Matheson is lost defensively, and his offense does not really compensate. So the Matheson contract at age 28 is better than both the others right now.
Curious, if you watched Petry at all last year? He sucked hard for 65-70 games, and then had a few decent games. It was embarassing how he quit on the habs. It’s still bad tbh. Matheson is lost defensively, and his offense does not really compensate.
Actually Matheson is no longer so lost defensively, especially on the left side. It’s still bad tbh. Matheson is lost defensively, and his offense does not really compensate.
Savard was not as bad as people remember here. That's going to be an ok 1st pair for a bottom 5 team.I’m kinda interested to see how Matheson-Savard works as a second pairing…
Tire fire or tough to play against? I can’t tell yet.
Such a pity!No he didn't. He was left exposed so we could protect Jordie Benn as our 3D.
