Confirmed with Link: [PIT/MTL] Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson and 4th PIT 2023

Life can be tough and sometimes families make hard decisions in life that put temporary stress on them. Time to grow up and realize in the real world not everything is sunshine and rainbows and people have rough years, not that a wife is some crazy person, uncaring of her husband's mental anguish.
Staying in Montreal wouldn’t have been all sunshine and rainbows I’m not sure where you’re going here. It’s an opinion that it’s the lesser of two shitty options. I’m just going by his quotes and how he played on the ice showed so yeah I feel for the guy. There’s likely more to it anyway

It is better than the MaxPac trade, or the Murray trade, we got younger, so I am good with it. We need a warm body to play, and Matheson is a local boy.

I'd compare the Petry trade more along the lines of McDonagh and Burns, since they're all D that were traded mainly to create cap space. And they all still have term on their deals.

McDonagh (4 years @ 6.75M) for Philippe Myers + Grant Mismash
Burns (3 years @ 8M - 33% retained) + Lane Pederson for Steven Lorenz + Etu Makiniemi + 2023 3rd Round Pick
Petry (3 years @ 6.25M) + Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson + 2023 4th Round Pick

Saw Petry on TSN. He said he thinks he was moved due to a combination of on and off ice issues.

He said , as I recall, he had on ice lues though things picked up for him at the end of the season. He thought management was casting him in a role for which he was not suited.

He didn't discuss his off ice issues.

If him being miscast was by DD, then okay as I know players couldn't follow his system. But sorry, he sounds a bit of a jerk. He took 0 responsibility.

And why was he traded ? Because he requested a f€£¥ing trade. Not impressed with that guy.

He did - said their home in Michigan is a 4-hr drive and it’s much easier for his wife’s family to fly in & out of Pit than it was for them to come to Mtl during the pandemic.

Petry also said Covid changed everything, there were no issues beforehand

Agreed that 100 things will happen between now and then.....so don't assume his cap hit will be peanuts in 25-26 cause it might not be.

And as mentioned, it's not the reliefs I expected......cause the reliefs is actually peanuts now.
It’s still CAP relief
Its still A younger player
Its still shipping out a disgruntled player
Its still more goals
Its still more assist
Its still more points
Its still an easier contract to move in 2yrs

It’s one extra year and that cap hit in 25-26 will be peanuts….and that’s IF he stays till the end.

1000 things will happen between now and then.

The important thing was getting relief for the next 3yrs on an aging player, and Hughes made it happen.
But Petry will be the better player for the next 3 years.. plus Poehling for free.. Why do you think Pittsburgh made this deal? We got fleeced hard.

I think (hope) Matheson is a more complete player. Probably better positive attitude.
Otherwise, I'm looking at the Marino trade (Ty Smith) and I'm thinking we should have dumped Petry elsewhere for notmuch and got Marino for Poehling? I'm not super good at talent analysis though.

Pens future is right now, they don’t have luxury of time to wait out Matheson develop from a Petry circa 2015 - they need the Petry of 2021 playoffs

Last season:

Pitlick was better then Poehling
Matheson was better then Petry

Those are facts

Fleeced is Drouin for Sergachev

Basically , Matheson "replaces" Romanov on the left, since losing him was clearly such a big piece, so I can see Kent's mindset there fixing the hole he had to create there for a C
Plus people forget, Edmundson has 1 (if traded) or 2 years left, and most likely wont be re-signed, so I can see them still needing a 30 yr old back there when it's time , so eventually it's a mix of MM, Guhle, Xhekaj and or Harris

The REAL questions are that right side lol... because if they go Savard, Wideman and let's just say Barron to get him exp.
Well, that's a fast track to top 5 pick... which is possibly what we're really after to complete the rebuild

All I know is, a 34 year old who is a MINUS in 9 out of 11 NHL seasons making 6.25M til 37?
Thanks but no thanks, thats Pittsburghs problem now, of course I "wanted more" but this is the reality of things, and I'm just glad hes gone
Now for the next couple problem contracts, you got this Kent

How do you know Petry will be better? Especially over 3 years? He's approaching his mid 30's and he's 6 years older than Matheson. Regardless, this team is rebuilding and that will take another couple years, so who cares if Petry is better over that time? And who cares about Poehling? He's barely an nhler and would've struggled to stay in Montreals lineup. Let's see what kind of ice time he gets in Pittsburgh .
People are looking at this deal for today and ignoring the future. Today, we tank. In 2 years we start to compete.

Don't forget the conditional 2nd. We almost paid another pick to get Drouin lollllllllllllllllllllllll
Bergevin and the pro scouts diarrhea the bed big time on that trade….what a mess

“BuT wAiT tIL DrOuIn PlAyS a FuLl SeAsOn UnDeR MSL.”
Safe to say he’s all skill with zero IQ….impossible to be that bad with that speed and and those hands.

He skates to easy areas of the ice. Rarely challenges defenders for space. Sometimes you need to fight for room to make plays, push defenders back on their toes.

He had it easy in junior and never learned to adjust his game at the pro-level.

The Pens wanna win a cup and chose Petry, that says a lot about Matheson.

Doesn’t mean we should have gave Poehling away for free.

Please bro, Matheson will never be at Petry’s level. I’dd like to see Matheson on a team coached buy Dum Dum Ducharme.

Petry will be better than Matheson and will thrive with the Pens, book it. Petry would have had 50+ points last season playing with the Pens instead of our dumpster fire. Peohling was given for free which is horrible asset management.

The proper thing to do would have been to trade Petry at 50% retention for some good futures. And to keep Poehling and to give him a shot on Suzuki’s left wing.

We must be doing a rebuild. This d just got worse. Petry didn't want to play here, so I'm surprised we even got a serviceable d man. Maybe Matheson will find his game and become an okay #3. For those comparing Matheson to Petry when Petry was traded here, I don't see it. This team feels like we're going top heavy but really, we don't have a # 1 or 2 d man and a goalie if price doesn't play this year. We're a ways away.

Do we know how Poehling became included in the deal? Was he thrown in so Hughes could clear cap space or did the Pens ask for him?

I’m trying to make sense of it, my gut tells me they asked for him. I feel like we got fleeced. I like all of HuGo’s other moves I just can’t stomach this one.
