Don't think Matheson is any better than Petry was here but this will be a win trade solely due to age and caphit.

It sounds like Petry is starting to decline due to age. It sounds like he's not as good with Pit as he was last year after Ducharme got fired and Eddie was back with him.

But even looking at their current comparative levels of play, it’s not too farfetched to say that Matheson is now the equal of or may have even have surpassed Petry’s level of play and on-ice production. I thought Matheson was clearly our best player on the ice against a very mediocre Flyers team and gave a Petry-like performance, similar to those games a few years ago when Petry was often our best defenceman (player) . Great trade for many reasons.
Pittsburgh paid the Righty premium. Look at our roster, if one of Harris, Xhekaj or Hutson was righty, we would be set for years.

anyone who saw him in mtl last year could have said that.... but hey reputation still had enough value for a top negotiator.

I prefer Matheson and I prefer the 4th..
Mike Matheson was a first round draft pick (23-OA) and is pacing for 51 points and a +27.

There are only 8 defencemen in the entire league who are better at both metrics, per game, than Matheson right now. That is easily first-pairing territory, but yes it is a small sample size.

I think it's safe to call Matheson at least a #3D, and at 28 years old and at a $4.875 cap hit until 2026, it is a fantastic acquisition in exchange for a 4th liner and an aging expensive d-man with defensive issues. The 4th round pick is just a tiny extra.

Games I watched this week Matheson was flying. Philly looked like they had Bantam speed the way he was moving. I would keep him and Savard around for sure. Rookies can earn their spots.
