Confirmed with Link: [PIT/MTL] Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson and 4th PIT 2023

Petry was put in a situation where he couldn't win, being used as #1 D and under a bad coach, he was exhausted. Still shocked at the deal but the cap is really proving to be a challenge. No pain losing Poehling. Glad to see Rem Pitlick signed, he was a nice surprise.
No need to worry about winning too many games with the defence this year and it makes the development of the young defencemen even more critical, at least for one year when Drouin and Byron are gone.

He went to the first team who didn't talk retention. Obviously Poehling was a sweetener to get the deal done and he was due for a raise next year. I'm very much on board with the move. Too many fans spent too much time in the trade proposal thread where Petry was getting excellent returns. :naughty:
This is exactly right.

I can't believe Poehling has this many defenders, must be those who voted him above Suzuki in our prospect poll.
WJC MVP and that hat trick game was all it took. Lolol. Even though I thought he racked most of his points in that tournament against weak competition when he was older too. That’s an example of why using these small tournaments as the barometer for the players future path is a very flawed outlook.

Poehling is the same non assertive, low IQ, soft big man he’s always been. Nothing has changed and nothing will. He doesn’t have the IQ to change it.

It’s probably the same people that can’t let go not selecting Wright… 😄😄
Nope. The ones upset about that seem to know what they are talking about.

Extremely high quality post

If you want to watch an AHL club, go find yourself find one near your home. Mr.Molson owe some respects to the people buying seasons tickets and paying 500$ per seast to see a game at the Bell.
Well I absolutely don’t want to be competitive next season, I want to tank for Bedard. After that I agree let’s go full steam ahead. But I don’t agree with this move at all.

I’m liking the way Matheson stands up for teammates while Jeff Petry left his testicles at home (his wife stored them for him in a pickle jar) and resorted to an empty stare whenever teammates got unfairly targeted, like with the Kassian hit on Monty last year.

Here’s Matheson showing that he’s not afraid to mix it up:

I'm assuming Petry doesn't engage Carl Alzner when he needs his testies back.:laugh::laugh:

Addition by subtraction, Petry was an embarrassment last year. Completely quit on the team and you can hear Hughes signaling that in his praise for Matheson (5 Star Human).

Good trade, I've wanted Petry gone since the Cup run. Never seen a guy go from so engaged, to total DNGAF. Pittsburgh will make the playoffs and I hope they enjoy Jeff's 3 points in 12 games.,

Hughes got an experienced and much younger NHL caliber defenseman and managed to keep Pitlick on the team on a team friendly deal. Not bad overall.

Petry and Romanov gone means the choice of coach is going to be critical

Matheson - Edmundson
Harris - Savard
Leskinen - Wideman
Schueneman

I'd move Edmundson to RD

Note that Hughes said at the end of his post Petry trade presser that he sees Barron on the blue line in Montreal this year.

Guhle almost made the team last year. It seems likely he'll win a spot.

I’m kinda interested to see how Matheson-Savard works as a second pairing…

Tire fire or tough to play against? I can’t tell yet.

I'd pair vets with rookies. But I'm sure we'll try that pair at some point.

I think Barron and Guhle will play NHL this year, but not sure they both make the team out of camp

If Matheson is worse, that actually serves the Habs' purpose. It will help them have another high pick next year.
He is not worse, that I am convinced of.

Has there ever been a worst D lineup in the history of the team?

Its fine for the tanking but our best dman this year is at best a #3
Barry Ricthter, Christian Laflamme, Scott Lachance, one of the Shannon brothers...Habs have iced some good ones

Hughes seems to believe in Matheson as a quality asset. We'll see how it goes.

His 4.85 cap hit and age should be easier to move if he plays well.

So it all comes down to how well he plays.
Why would they move him if he plays well?

And at best mediocre number 3. They are more number 4 in a top defense like avs.

Too old for our core. He should be moved before his contract ends.
He's only 28 and by the end of his contract he'll be 32 and they need vets. This isn't a tank job like some people think around here.
