"The code" is a stupid argument. That being said it is to be taken as a slight. It's like if a NBA player took a free throw at the end of a blow out game with one hand. He added an inherent risk to a "gimme" shot and that's kinda showing up your opponent.

"The code" is dumb though, acting like there is some unwritten laws how everyone must act and if they don't they are banished is how the bad parts of hockey culture flourish.

The craziest thing here is Biron saying something like : You shouldn't do that, especially in game that's so important, for the Maple Leafs anyways.

How is that of any concern to Greig?
The whole clip is basically comedic relief.

Someone else said it best. Biron is probably still salty Ray Emery kicked his ass.

you are telling me someone takes a slap shot on an empty net goal and doesn't expect anything to come from it? Get real, it was completely unnecessary. Yes the cross check should have been lower, but Toronto had every right to be upset by it.
I absolutely agree with this.. he knew what he was doing and he wanted a reaction. He deserved a reaction! He played the part of weasel perfectly IMO.

The reaction should've been face wash, shin slash, square up and fight or a cross check to his chest or lower... all 2 minute penalties and a scrum.

This reaction was the reaction of his dreams.... Reilly is now going to be suspended and Ottawa won the game. Double win for Ottawa. This could hurt Toronto as Rielly is 24 minutes a night and has 43 points. He's key to the Leafs.

I'm putting my money on 6 games.

I think he will get more than 6 because of when it happened in the game.

Perron cross checked Zub mid-way through the first period. Reilly did his with seconds to go.

In game consequences don't matter with seconds to go because it's not like a PP or game misconduct matters at that point. That takes away the primary deterrent for players to act out. The suspension needs to be very steep to show players that they cannot capitalize on a game being over to try to assault another player.

Talk to the leafs fans blaming Grieg for not expecting to be assaulted. They are sick.
There was like one guy who I already said was wrong and you keep pretending it's many Leaf fans and ignoring Leaf fans disagreeing with the one defending it...and you're just deflecting, that doesn't make your comparison any less insane and gross, and not gross because it's mean to that guy but because you clearly have a lack of respect regarding the seriousness of that crime and behaviour that denies it.

It isn't just Leafs fans, most hockey fans over the age of 30 know that Greig expected a reaction on this. Watch hockey from the 70s and 80s and you would have seen a much greater reaction.

That being said, what you said was messed up in a much worse way. Be a bit more sensitive to comments being made about sexual assault when a week earlier 5 dudes just got arrested for it....

Not that I don’t think Rielly deserves a suspension, he does, but is there any precedence for a player with no DoPS history getting > 5 games as their first and only suspension?
If you want to go way back: Steve Downie got 20 games for charging Dean McAmmond, and not only did he not have a prior (NHL) suspension history, he hadn't yet played one NHL regular season game.

That's the one that immediately jumps out, but beyond that I'd have to spend more time researching it than I care to.

Anything less than 10 games and you know Bettman is in bed with the Revenue machine that is the Leafs
He's not getting 10 games for this, so conspiracy theory away.

Me too. A non hockey play after the whistle to another players head. I Think most leaf fans agree that it should not be tolerated.
Plus it wasn't like it could even serve to light a fire under his team to set the stage for a miracle comeback, what with five seconds left. He was trying to do one thing and one thing only: hurt another player. There are no other motivators behind his decision.

I honestly don't get what's so objectionable about taking a slapshot into an empty net. This is the first I've heard of this being a CODE(tm) violation.
