I keep coming back to the fact that we're not going to sign his next contract. Explore trade options for the next 3 years and make the damn deal when a good one arrives. It's truly negligent to think that this team is built well and can win 4 series in the playoffs.

I'm not saying move Marner at all costs. I'm not saying he sucks, he's obviously very good. I am saying that even if this team beat Montreal, I would stake my house that they would fall apart against the Jets or Tampa in round 3. Montreal found a new gear, we do not have that. We go down a gear.

Mitch would be a fan favourite if he signed the Point contract. He did not. We have to essentially trade or walk everyone else to free agency so we can continually ice the same guys that are the ones responsible for not producing.

It was gonna be a tough series because Danault, Gally, Lek, Caulfied, Byron, Evans and Anderson 7 guys with super fast straight line speed .. and Suzuki and Toffoli pretty good on their edges not quite as fast but can twirl .. it was gonna be hard for many of our guys to skate with that team .. Kerfoot and Willy were able to use their speed to create advantage for us .. so rest of guys had to use skill on puck to create and bottom line they could not get it done .. but most teams don't have Habs speed and can be broken down easier except of course Bolts who can skate with anyone, dangle with anyone too and now they can scrap with anyone but of course they cheat on CAP oh well .. can't beat em join em .. next year with Bolts, Florida and Bruins this division will be ridiculous .. even if we beat Habs out for 4th we will be in real tough for a wildcard at best
Nahhhh because Shanny and Dubas are saying the core will get it

Your predictions have been far from stellar.
Maybe we should give the Habs some credit.
I think I was only 1 on here before season even started who said I expected Habs to be best team because of defense and tending but I thought Leafs would get more points in regular season .. my prediction turned out to be exactly correct as normal .. and I hate da Habs

Pretty sure you meant regular season friend, which you were wrong in spades.
You then predicted the habs get swept by any western team.

That's where someone who's an energizer bunny with finishing ability like Robertson can slide in on the third line. Hopefully he's bulked up a bit since that was one of the weaknesses for Nick last year when he played imo. In terms of Kerfoot, he potentially won't even be on the team next year due to salary reasons (paying 4 guys 40 mill in a flat cap eh). If we don't keep him we could look for a decent 3c guy who can get into the corners and battle.

If Mitch struggles doing this we might just have to run Willy on line 3 with Kerfoot (if he stays)/Galchenyuk. Marner can go with Matthews and Tavares gets a couple grinders to carry like he has. Either way I think it's best for the club to spread the talent around to optimize matchups in a series
I don't think there's necessarily ever a "right" way to build the lineup, but there has to be constant changes and adjustments depending on what's working and who the opponent is. Marner's 1 dimensional game (even though he's really really good at that dimension) really hurts his ability to move around the lineup and be effective.

Overall, you are probably right. Every team is going to have a Danault or a Chara who are really effective at shutting down one player in a series, and they will be focusing on Matthews. If Marner can't help create space for him, he should be playing lower in the lineup or off the top powerplay. And if he refuses to accept being demoted, he should go somewhere else

lol.
That’s a horrible line.

people were bitching all season about Tavares being unproductive 5x5.

imagine a full season with this crappy line
65-47-11 was an amazing possession driving line that could chip in with offence and now you’re upgrading 47 with 91

You worded your response incorrectly. You THINK it’s a horrible line. Nobody knows until
It’s tried, I highly doubt you’re batting 1000 on your decisions

Also Keefe tried that line initially right when he was hired (Mitch was injured at the time I think?) and it actually worked incredibly.

1st team all star

Let's trade him for the 9th overall pick and a gritty 3rd line forward.

It’s clear that Tavares is not a rush player like 34, 88, 16. Tavares excels with the grind and cycle game

could MLSE please hire coaches who don’t have heads in asses all the time

Would that mean his value is actually high instead of low.
Instead of 9th overall pick and a gritty 3rd liner, with being First Team All star, we might get the 8th overall and TWO 3rd liners, lol.

Kadri, Brown Kapanen > Marner

We have zero depth up front

Kadri is good but Brown and Kapanen are overrated. Brown shooting percentage is way high this season and he scored too many SH goals which aren't easily repeatable. Good riddance to both. Well, all three actually.

I've yet to see a very compelling offer by our fellow fans.

If someone was like, 'I wish we could trade Marner for McAvoy/Svechnikov or even Jack Hughes', I would agree.

But there are so many stinkers. Most of whom just want cap space so they can sign 30 year old free agents.

Agree with you. I think ultimately it is how Dubas use the free up cap space and ultimately how the Leafs perform in the playoffs.
Dubas can fill the cap spaces with Loui Eriksson, Antoine Roussel and Ferland, but if the Leafs end up winning the Cup, who cares.

Love this post. I also love Mitch Marner. He's great. But he may end up being the biggest mistake this organization has made since John Kordic. A lot of flash but really not a lot of substance when it matters.

Very complicated I guess.

Wouldnt the other team just focus on Marner and make life even more difficult for him knowing the other 2 guys are min wage 3rd lines, therefore not a threat?

Who Cauflield And Suzuki? If Marner can't eat against those guys while Nylander can take Kerfoot and Gally and produce we have big problems. Marner wouldn't be facing Danault and Webber anymore.

Just spitballing/playing devils advocate but I think the book is out on Marner.. if Im montreal in that scenario Im putting the 4th line Armia, Perry and Stall out there and telling them to hit/lean on Mitch every chance they get and make life very uncomfortable for him. If its some other group of players out there against him like suzuki and Caufield, clog up the middle, hold the blue line, take away his passing lanes and hit when possible or just double team him, they have the speed and skills to make him pay for a mistake. I don't see Mik or Engvall generating much offense or scoring much.

I think if Marner plays with Engvall and Mik. Teams might use their forth line against them and focus on Marner. And if Marner can’t even create space against 4th liners, he really doesn’t deserve to be a 11mil players.
If the other team clog up the middle, then just dump and let Mik to chase, he is faster than most in the league.

So lets say Mitch does dump it in which is not really his style and Mik gets it...then what? Mik doesn't know what to do with it once he does get it. Who is going to score on that line? And as far as whether Marner can generate space/chances/results or not against a 4th line, without a top 6 forward or a goal scorer on his line...that is the 11 million dollar question.
