Rumor: Dallas Stars have approached Wyatt Johnston's camp with an 8-year contract offer that would pay him slightly over 8M per season.

Should be starting with a 10.

There's going to be a lot of shocked fans with the rising CAP.

8 for Johnston is a massive lowball. Brock Boeser is looking for 8 right now and Wyatt Johnston is a much better player in a much better age gap.
rfa years are worth way less than ufa years…

Johnston is 21 now and if he signs a deal for 8 years it would be 4 rfa years and 4 ufa years. And is a center.

Boesser is 28. Any deal he signs: They’re all ufa years. And is a winger.

Neither of these situations would be used to derive the value of the other.

A better comparable for the situation would be Seth Jarvis who:

Signed at the same age selling the same number of rfa years.

Is also a scoring center

Seth Jarvis signed in 2024 and his aav is 7.420.

In Dallas players do not pay state income tax. It would be expected that there is a slight discount due to this.

I’d guess that the player signs for similar to Jarvis and that the reporting is inaccurate.

My guess here is about 7.6Mx8. A slight discount over the 7.9 or so as derived from Jarvis. Perhaps the contract holdup is not over the aav. I suppose the terms, such as structure of the pay or bonuses could change the numbers if Johnston’s preferences are significantly different than Jarvis but I don’t think this is a case where 9s or 10s will be involved.

Well we've apparently already offered more than that and it's been declined. It'll come it at least 8.5M per.

The fact that this is part of the discussion is a competitive-balance issue for the NHL. Dallas should not be able to sign him for less than other teams would because of where they're located.

Feel free to complain about that in the yearly thread that comes up on the main boards where folks want to make excuses for why nobody wants to sign with their teams. :sarcasm:

Dallas management better not f*** around or they will find out this stud will accept a massive offer sheet because there are a ton of teams looking for a center and the cap is jumping quite a bit.

He shouldn't give them any discount because (unless I'm incorrect), he won't have trade protection for the entirety of the deal. So he could take a 'discount' and be traded to a higher-tax location with no recourse. He should take the market rate.

So over these takes

Texas does not have income tax, BUT they make up for it in other areas.

There are more ways than an income tax for states to get money. Texas uses the if you use it we tax it method.

So. We have high sales tax with local jurisdictions able to add up to 2% allowing the total to be almost %-10 sales tax

Then… Property tax. 5th highest in the nation. For perspective. Texas pays double amount of property tax of 30 other states. Double!

If you average ALL the taxes Texas residents pay, then they average above middle of the road about 12-15 for most tax burden state.

Yep I think there's a difference on UFA taking a discount with a NMC and. RFA

I can see the thought process when someone like Raymond signed $8m/year just a few months ago, but no way that gets it done now with the cap increase announcement

Why are people acting surprised? Negotiations always happen.. a team sends a little lower of an offer to a player and the agent then counters with a too high of an offer and then they meet in between

This is negotiations 101
