He should get the max. I'm tired of mediocre players like Clarkson (during his FA year) get almost as much as a guy like Crosby. Lets balance out the salaries so that scrubs stop getting overpaid.

Crosby got max salary on his first few UFA years. 12M on a 60M cap was 20 percent. Not exactly the same thing, but people seem to be naive about what kind of discounts Crosby got. He also took over 17M of the cap on his first post ELC deal that was only 5 years which is a stone's throw from max as well.

Ladies and gentlemen... the reason Wayne Gretzky was traded.

You aren't worth ____ so take _____ tops or bye bye.

$15 million was all it took to get Gretzky. $14 million (per year) might be the straw that gets McDavid out of Edmonton.

Take it easy guys, I'm having fun with how cheap Edmonton is with their incredible players.

Different time my man.

Pocklington needed the 15M to pay off debt from his other business ventures...Darryl Katz is a billionaire and a brilliant business man. I mean..hes paying girl millions for sexual endeavors...he'll pay 14M to his most valuable employee lol

if they don't give that to him then he'll get it via 30 offer sheets which force Edmonton to match anyways

Toews and Kane earn $13.8M per, but Cap $10.5M due to drastic salary declines near the end of their 8 year contract.

McDavid should at least earn more, so $14M seems about right.

That will be bad for the Leafs in a couple of years.

My understanding is 10pts = $1M when new contracts come up. At his pace he's looking at north of $10M/yr but unless he starts posting 130-140pts/season he's not getting $14M aav.

$12M x 8 years is my guess.
8 years and 11 million is my guess.

Its stupid to think that the NHLPA wants one member to be making most of a teams cap as they would rather have the TEAM spending the max and more members benefiting from increased salaries. If the Oilers are handcuffed by having to pay McDavid max money it will probably mean the Oilers won't have a competitive team and that effects revenue which will effect the overall salary cap.
I wish people would just for a second take off their HF Troll masks and think about the business side.

Tell that to Toews who got 10.5 when his 48 points in 47 games is the only times he's been more than a PPG

Putting out a big number works well for McDavid and Chiarelli - when he takes $10-12M it makes McDavid look like a team player giving the Oil a discount and Chiarelli also comes out of it looking good like he had something to do with getting him for a reasonable cost.

He shouldn't accept anything less than $14 million. 33% more than Jonathan Toews-that's a bargain.

1. its not McDavid's job to worry about cap and building a team

2. lets not pretend him leaving money on the table somehow guarantees a Cup. He'll take a huge discount and EDM still doesnt win anything, then what? I'm sure he's thrilled about that possibility...

3. people hoping that he will leave $2M+ per year on the table "for the greater good" are living in a fantasy land, that's not how real life works. Especially when he saw Chia back up the money truck and Lucic and Sekera's homes. UFAs got paid and he should be a nice boy and take less money that he's worth, sure thing.

but you think he could see that 14 million would handcuff the team. Not saying he would take tons less but the kid should realize its not helpful

Is he aware the team needs more than 1 player?

He's aware that no matter how much he will sign for, he and Talbot will have to carry the whole team again. Him leaving money money on the table so Chia can sign some scrub is not going to change that.
