I really can't see him asking for that. He'd be hated for asking for that much.

I'm a Flames fan so I'd be all over it, but it doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah thing is, he ain't a UFA...you might wanna brush up on the difference between RFA and UFA

Sure, he doesn't sign unless he gets what he wants. Goes to arbitration, gets $10m/yr. Then he's a UFA at the end of it.

Gets $14m+ on the open market.

Oilers back to being irrelevant.

So what? He saw mediocre guys paid and he actually holds more cards than any UFA ever, since there would be 30 teams offersheeting him with max dollars if it ever comes to that.

That simple is it? Maybe brush up on the CBA before you make silly posts like this

In before report of Matthews costing 18 million, because his superior defensive awareness and intangibles make him "more generational" than McD.

Yeah, what were Monahan and Gaudreau thinking when trash like Brouwer is getting 4.5m, yet here they are settling for less than 7m each.

He's worth a blank check basically, but I'd be surprised if he pushed for 14 mill. That would make it harder to sign the elite talent needed to make Edmonton the team they could potentially be.

Crosby and Malkin could've asked for anything, but they both took discounts (8.7 and 9.5), with the difference essentially letting them add someone like Kessel. 14 mill certainly isn't a home team discount

Not sure what your point is, but neither Monahan nor Gaudreau gave the Flames any sort of discount. Arguably only Brodie did.

Of course Gaudreau gave a discount. Guy leads the team in points, NHL allstar, lady byng winner....could have easily asked for 7.5-8m

I'd be surprised if he asks that much but if he did, what options do Edmonton have? Their entire franchise depends on him, so they just have to pay up and make it work. It would be a disaster for them if he bolts at 25, so playing hardball probably isn't an attractive option.

I figured it would be 9.7 AAV, or around 10 for 5 years

If we're going that high, I'd think we're going for a full 8 year term

Have to do it, I'd think. But christ. Wonder what Draisaitl is gonna ask for then? I mean if his agent breaks it down and figures what percentage less he should make...$12m?

Would you consider McDavid signing for about 13M for 5 years to be a discount?

can you give McDavid $8m a year as a player and a percentage stake in the team?

It's going to get insane for the Oilers...their window could close as quick as it's opening...bizarre!!

$14M for 8 years seems kind of high especially if he wants to bring cups to Edmonton. Look how Crosby took a lower salary to keep the team competitive. I see McDavid doing the same so the $11M someone mentioned makes sense.

He may not be willing to sign for 8 years. Maybe he wants to milk them for all he can and then become a Ranger.

I suspect he will sign for 8 years but at something that will not cripple them. I'm going to guess more like 11-12.
