This **** poor day for Edmonton Oiler fans just won't end, Strome trade, Russell re-signing and 14 million dollar ask from McDavid.

That being said I imagine McDavid ends up being closer to 11-12 million.

McDavid should be asking for a blockbuster AFTER he wins a cup or two.

Doing this almost ensures he wouldnt win a cup

All Oilers fans really have to do is remember that this is a problem every other team would love to have. He's been everything he was projected to be and more.

If anyone will get Edmonton into a bad cap situation with a contract like this, it's certainly Chiarelli.

You give Connor a blank check. You sign him at whichever number and you go to sleep well at night.
Correct. Without McDavid, Edmonton would still be a laughing stock.

You could say Edmonton is now the McDavids. You sign him to a 20 million dollar deal if the league maximum is 14 million, and you consider yourself very fortunate you are in such a tough position to put players around him.

Crosby signed a 5 year deal 1 year before his ELC expired. At the time he signed his deal, the salary cap was 50.3M. His deal was for 8.7M. That would mean his extension when signed accounted for roughly 17.3 percent of the salary cap.

And Crosby's second contract was pre-lockout front loaded one, so it's not really comparable. Crosby didn't take any pay cut, though he obviously has earned every penny from that deal.

He should get the max. I'm tired of mediocre players like Clarkson (during his FA year) get almost as much as a guy like Crosby. Lets balance out the salaries so that scrubs stop getting overpaid.

Before people go nuts, Dreger one year ago was saying $12 million per for Stamkos .... he ended up signing for $8.5 mill per.

Yeah, but let's not pretend it wasn't a shocker when Stamkos signed for that little.

There's also the tax advantage of TB that cuts out a huge amount of the difference between what the best offers might have been for Stamkos on the open market and his eventual home town discount contract with TB.

Here's the gist of things. 14M on an 8 year term for McDavid is not farfetched at all given it is almost EXACTLY the same as the money Crosby made 8 years after his ELC when you look at his salary as a percentage of the cap. If McDavid signs for considerably less than 14M on an 8 year term, that's a possibility, but it means he took a home town discount. Good for EDM if he does that, and as a fan of a budget team in Ottawa I certainly won't be complaining about salaries not being pushed forward by McDavid.
