Team leader Toews did it. I don't see why Connor wouldn't. One injury and his career can end. Why not make the most he can?

Yeah, after they won something. Making this deal before winning the cup is suicide in terms of being able to build a team around him good enough to be a contender. Once you've won everything in the hockey world, then sign the crippling contract. At that point it's worth it

With rumours like this and Toews and Kane contracts it makes you appreciate Sid that much more

You'd appreciate Sid a lot less if someone wasn't smart enough to be sure he could be extended prior to the CBA being changed.

Sid took very close to max on his first deal (17.3% of the cap, max is 20), and got max on his second deal for the first few UFA years (12M of a 60M cap).

12M sounds right, a small savings off his market value. Any less and he's really being nice.

I think you've probably hit the nail on the head.

Dreger already back pedalling, thinks he knows he might've bite more off than he can chew here.

Stamkos was supposed to get $11 mill last year too.

I don't see what the big deal is. 14 mil wouldn't be crippling, the cap has been going up every year and will continue to do so. McDavid turns scrubs like Maroon into top 6 forwards. Obviously if you're the Oilers you negotiate, but they should be just fine with anything in the 12-14 mil AAv range on a long term deal. Anything less would be an absolute gift.

14 mill worth it Get out , hawks won 3 cups and towes make 10.5 , I dont care how good you are to demand 14 mill with out making it past the second round of the play offs is unreal . get real . 12 MILL tops
Ladies and gentlemen... the reason Wayne Gretzky was traded.

You aren't worth ____ so take _____ tops or bye bye.

"Bruce McNall leaned over and said, 'I'll give you $15 million, plus some players.' At that time, $15 million was $18.5 million Canadian," Pocklington told NHL.com. "I said, 'Let me think about it,' and called him a week later and said, 'I could live with that.'"

$15 million was all it took to get Gretzky. $14 million (per year) might be the straw that gets McDavid out of Edmonton.

Take it easy guys, I'm having fun with how cheap Edmonton is with their incredible players.

and if he gets close to that in his second year?

Well he has to do that before we just assume he will get similar money. What if Matthews never pushes into that 90-100 point plateau? Leafs would be in a tough spot if we payed Matthews close to Mcdavid and he doesn't produce at a similar rate.

In your closet
The Hawks really aren't making it work though. They're in cap trouble

Well yeah, but cap wise we're pretty screwed regardless of whether McD wants 14 or 12 or 9 or 25.

Just comes with the territory of having a lot of good players. Point is, I'd want to follow their model of locking in your core at whatever price is necessary and then figuring out everything else after that.

Before people go nuts, Dreger one year ago was saying $12 million per for Stamkos .... he ended up signing for $8.5 mill per.

The Toews and Kane comparisons don't really line up, they made 6.5 on their RFA contract.

How much money did Stamkos turn down to pass on signing in Toronto last summer?

The place where an 80-point scoring cancer survivor can be run out of town because he dared to eat a hot dog? Better hope you never have a bad season, Auston.

Yzerman's best negotiating move was to wait for Stamkos meet the Leafs.
