Sure, he doesn't sign unless he gets what he wants. Goes to arbitration, gets $10m/yr. Then he's a UFA at the end of it.

Gets $14m+ on the open market.

Oilers back to being irrelevant.

Might wanna go learn how arbitration and free agency work....lol....Mcdavid can't hit UFA status for another 5 seasons.

I don't see him taking that much just simply because he'll want a competitive team around him. I suspect he'll be around $10M range by choice.

He won't get 14, but McDavid owes it to his peers to attain a high salary as he is effectively going to be the new salary ceiling, like Crosby, Malkin and Ovechkin were before him.

he's almost as important to the league as he is the OIL
so maybe they should subsidize a couple million.

McDavid seems like a guy who will sign a cap friendly contract to help the team win. Katz will also treat him like a King with gifts.

McDavid is a unique case because if he hits free agency next year, he'll be the only player who has ever been worth offer sheeting 4 first round picks and max salary (currently 15M AAV) to get that far.

Now, obviously that will NEVER happen, but EDM knows this. It gives McDavid leverage. Even know almost every RFA can be offer sheeted when they hit free agency, it doesn't give most of them any actual leverage because most free agents aren't worth the inflated salary+compensation+risk of a **** show if the other team matches and comes back for revenge that is required by offer sheets.

14 million for a player who hasn't brought a Cup? Lol

Do it, Chia
14 million for a player that has single handedly turned a franchise the other direction in every single retrospect.

sure he's worth it but not 20% of the cap..need more than one player to win a cup.
20% of the cap isn't 100%. You invalidated your own argument in the same sentence.

I don't care what the number is as long as he's signed for 8 years. Now if Mcdavid is serious about winning a Cup or multiple Cups then he should keep it in the 10,5 range.

I agree. With players like McDavid, all RFA really means is that we can match any deal he signs. There's no such thing as leverage against McDavid, and with a player like him there won't be any kind of honour among GMs to avoid going after him either.

McDavid would cost 4 first round picks if he were signed to an offer sheet.

If Edmonton doesn't open up the checkbook, then they are taking a huge risk. McDavid is worth 4 first round picks.

ooo what would be cool from a human interest/character POV would be if he and Draisaitl make a pact to sign for the same amount/term. Not a cheap one but McDavid has to realize having a second elite player in the forward corps is going to make his stay there much more enjoyable.

Doubt he gets 14. 12.5 for 8 seems about right - be interesting to see what happens though. One thing - the NHL better start taking care of its megastars better. Once guys like McDavid start eating that much cap, teams will be looking to take them out even more

yes its very unlikely but seems weird that dreger would throw out that high of a number without knowing something

in basketball/football/baseball guys make this and much more...

edmonton will be asking mcdavid to sign for 8 years... cap goes up by inflation... and escrow claws back over 10%

in 8 years the cap might be around 90 mill... run of the mill star players might be making 12-13 mill...

if mcdavid locks in at around 10-11 like corey perry and anze kopitar and johnathon toews he is making a huge mistake

14 sounds huge but these owners want the best players and are willing to pay... mcdavid will sell more tickets/merchandise than anyone...

sorry oiler fans... gretzky made more than anyone else and now so will mcdavid

No kidding.

He'll end up getting the max salary (20% of the cap). He's worth every penny of it. The Oilers are **** without him.
