Within that argument Murray was a goalie that was consistently good until, according to Woodley, the pens defensive structure exposed his weakness and possibly mental issues when his father passed. In the same interview Woodley said Murray has addressed his stylistic weakness and was trending well until injury last season. This season he seems to be on the same track of improvement, so in this case it would be more likely for Murray to be able to sustain a high level of play than for samsonov to achieve it, just looking at it from a odds perspective.
From that view Murray is the safer bet, no?

Samsonov looked like a world beater before he went down to and I'm still inclined to prefer the younger guy without Murray's injury History

If we could get 6-7 good years out of Samsonov its a lot of organizational stability at a position like goaltender

Agreed but Imo Murray has looked better this far

I'm sure he did but he's still rfa so we have some control and the qo will be manageable.
Maybe he does a bridge deal?

I think there's a reasonable chance will see him get a two year cheaper deal, unless his agent really tries to push for a 3-4 year deal like Husso.

Either way I'd expect him to be a Leaf in 2023-2024

True Salt but he's also been injured as well which isn't ideal either
That's why I want to keep the duo

I think he will be open to staying here. There has to be some loyalty to dubas for taking a chance on him

I'm open to trading one of them if the money gets a bit aggressive for Samsonov

He doesn't have a great injury track record so I think he's going to want some term if someone wants to give it to him

I hope that isn't us

TBF If this keeps up, I wouldn't be opposed to letting Matt Murray play out his last year here.

With Muzzin LTIRetired and the bottom six seeing an influx of ELC prospects(Knies, steeves) and cheap UFAs (connor brown, andreas johnsson anyone?), I think a 1A and 1B scenario for one more year could be optimum.

It doesn't look like Woll or Petrulezzi are ready, and I'd prefer Kallgren as 3rd stringer, not backup.

If Samsonov got around $4M, I think that would be workable.

Then again, there are some interesting UFA G the Leafs could go after as back-up, like Talbot or Reimer.

Samsonov is an RFA so assuming both are healthy and play well I can't see a reason not to run it back.

We don't need to rush Petruzzelli, but Woll is waiver eligible next year. That shouldn't necessarily concern the Leafs since I don't think it is particularly likely he gets claimed with the contract he has, but he is much more ready for an NHL job than Kallgren ever was.

Murray
Samsonov (RFA)
---
Woll
Petruzzelli
Kallgren (RFA)

+ McKay, Cavallin, and Hildeby.

I don't think the Marlies really care about giving McKay opportunities, so he can just be an ECHL goalie again next year. But you would have to think there has to be a legit shot for Cavallin and Hildeby to get some full time AHL work next year. Then does Kallgren want to stay here when he will start getting blocked and passed by younger and better options? He has another year of waiver exemption, which is valuable, but Petruzzelli has the same thing and he may be a better option for us going forward.

Ultimately, not a bad problem to have and we are not going to need to turn to Hutchinson or anyone like him going forward.

He continues to impress, and I'll happily eat crow on this one. The talent has always been there, it's the durability that will continue to be the question mark.

It's nice though to have a goalie to make some difficult saves, the majority of which I think are going to be sure goals. To say he has been steady and solid would be an understatement based on his play since returning from injury.

Murray looks like a fortress in front of a defensively strong team, Samsonov looked brilliant behind a tire fire defense.

I'm not entirely sure the stats back that up. The Leafs are giving up more shots per game and more high danger chances per game when Murray is in net than when Samsonov is in net. They're also boxing out better when Samsonov is in nets as per the average shot distances each have faced.

Shots Against per 60:
Murray - 33.38
Samsonov - 28.09

High Danger Shots Against per 60:
Murray - 8.74
Samsonov - 8.40

Average Shot Distance:
Murray - 33.25
Samsonov - 35.12

Murray reads and tracks the puck better. I have to say the structure of our defense looks good but Murray has made 10 bell saves often in every game.
In 8 games played samsonov has faced 214 shots and in 7 Murray had faced 234

Murray is a life long leaf from ontario and his mother moved to Toronto not too long ago. I would feel him out to see if he is interested in taking less to be a leaf before i decide (if i was GM) who leafs should go with after this season.

Ultimately you do what you think gives u the best chance at the thing.

What a dominant goalie we have in our net. He's just so reliable and in control in there.

Best goalie we have had in years. I'm trying to think of that last goalie that gave me this much confidence and i'm having trouble coming up with a name. (yes yes i know it's a very small sample size). Maybe curtis Joseph? I would say early Andersen was good, but then he imploded
