Last year for Tavares if we don't go deep in the playoffs?

Tavares has steadily declined since his knee injury in 2014 at the Olympics. He has never been the same and the declined has increasing since he signed in to. It was a bad signing at the time and now looks horrible.
Yeah it's almost as if Lou had him figured out when he didn't offer him a deal he would take .

I sure hope so, but how? No team is taking him without significant retention, so that's almost a non-option. If things got ugly enough I could see him waiving his no move though. Doubtful teams get gifted a compliance buyout soon since they weren't after the cap froze initially.

I truly believe this contract is a massive detriment and will continue to be.

This guy has put up 200 points in 205 games, costed zero assets to acquire and is here for 3 more years.

Yet you guys act like he's a broken leper with a gambling addiction that you can't wait to be rid of.

The sheer audacity of it should surprise me, but this is hardly the first nor last thread where a majority of the fan base has lost a grip on reality.

You could have McDavid in Toronto, and he still could not be good enough for you to be happy.

Bingo. Johnny has been all around it this year, and the pucks just haven’t found the back of the net. He could have 5 or 6 goals with a little better luck.

the whole team is struggling. The hyperbole in this thread is wild.

It's a perfectly fine option - this team needs a short rebuild under new management. Maybe 4 seasons of tanking.

His play with another is now he earned it from Dubas.

I think of it like any other business move.

If the CFO of Amazon goes to Tesla, he gets a huge salary a ton of perks and a corner suite.

He earned that through his performance at Amazon.

I find myself defending Tavares, not because he's the greatest but because he's sure far from bad.

I did a very superficial check of points on the nhl's stats board.

I looked points per game for the past 5 years for the Leafs.

The top 12 leaders (who played full seasons) are:

Matthews (4 seasons)
Marner (3 seasons)
Tavares (3 seasons)
Reilly (1 season)
Nylander (1 season)

FWIW the Reilly and Nylander seasons were a hair less productive than Tavares' lowest season.

I don't think he sucks as much as y'all are thinking.....

JT has been playing WAAY better than Marner. Which isn't saying much I know, but I feel like he's actually been getting chances, been in the mix a bit. I think JT's footspeed makes it easier for people to jump on him, because his straight-line speed really does make him look slow out there.

He needs to play better and bury some chances, but he isn't some unplayable player currently.

It's not that he sucks, it's a few factors.

1. His production is trending negatively. 2. He isn't close to an 11 million dollar caliber asset. 3. He's on the wrong side of 30 so things aren't likely looking to improve for him.

Add to that the team hasn't seen any positive growth under his 'leadership'. I like the player, think from all I know he's a great person. Right now though he's a detriment to the organization, due to his cap hit.

What would a JT buyout look like to our cap?
I’m not up on how they calculate it all.

There is some ridiculous crap on this thread. Hate the man's cap hit but don't hate the player, especially when his replacement would be David Kampf, Alex Kerfoot or Jason Spezza if he were to leave. Go ahead, explain to me how a team rolling with Kampf instead of Tavares centering the second line is better because it has 11 million to play with. This is complete nonsense.

excellent game from jt

leader led the team

Tavares was really great against Detroit. The thing that's frustrating are those games where it looks like he's playing in tennis shoes, and then he's capable of this, albeit a team you'd consider to be on the softer opponent end of the spectrum. Like everything with this team lately, you just hope the good snowballs into something that looks like sustained success.

Also kind of strange that the Leafs Big 4 never seem to fire on all cylinders at the same time. Now that Tavares is playing well, of course Matthews goes cold.

Tavares plays out his contract here unless there is a full rebuild and even then he’s 95% likely to be here.

He’s from Toronto, with young kids.

He’s staying

and will probably have some role after his contract

Threads like this are a complete waste of time

No I don't think he's going anywhere. I'm also cautiously optimistic about his play going forward, even with his supposed decline after the first year with the Leafs. He's still giving us basically a Mats Sundin level of point production (though he seldom takes games over in the same dominant way). It is in any case on Matthews to do more of the heavy lifting. I can see JT falling to a 20-25 goal/60 point player in the last couple of years of the deal but we'll just have to live with that and hope the cap going up can soften the blow.

This is pure garbage.

I posted this on the main board in the Tavares thread. Here's his last 10 seasons points per game:

2020-210.9
2019-201
2018-191.1
2017-181
2016-170.9
2015-160.9
2014-151
2013-141.1
2012-131
2011-121

Where's the decline? Same production. It's almost insanely consistent. You say he declined after 2014, and then again after he signed in Toronto. Yet he matched his 2013-14 peak after signing in Toronto. How can he have a "steady decline" followed by an "increasing decline" and then end up higher than he was? A slight variance season-to-season isn't a decline. He's done great since signing here.

Complain about the cap structure, discuss the team's playoff failures, lament Tavares' age or possible future decline. Sure. But stop lying about his current production or some made up "steady decline". He hasn't had a steady decline. It's the exact same production he's had for a decade.
