Last year for Tavares if we don't go deep in the playoffs?

32 team league. There is no supply of quality players waiting for us to use the cap room on. 90% odds we will have to fill it up with overpaid depth players or pay a no.4 D like a no.2/no.3

It's the sad reality of the NHL and why I don't get involved in cap fights here. Player dilution. Casual fans change the channel if your 2-4 lines play too much. You need to catch the depth player BEFORE they breakout. We will always have cap room for that. If you're signing them post-breakout you already lost.

Tavares stays. Look at it this way. If we get eliminated, this means we're still some pieces away. If we then lose Tavares....we're even more pieces away now.

Not sure I'd look at it that way. Think about how the Leafs basically moved out Kapanen, Brown and Kadri in a series of cap adjustments over the past few years and how they make a little bit more than Tavares combined. That's an entire line of lesser players but with Tavares declining out of the elite category, we slowly lose the "quality" over "quantity" over time.

If you could get rid of Tavares and go shopping again with $11 million in cap that would breathe fresh life into this organization which has grown quite stagnant.

Obviously I'm joking. He is struggling and looking older every day but he should still be good for 25 goals and 60 points as a 2nd line center which isn't too bad. I think he works a lot better with Marner and they both will start to produce.

This guy has put up 200 points in 205 games, costed zero assets to acquire and is here for 3 more years.

Yet you guys act like he's a broken leper with a gambling addiction that you can't wait to be rid of.

The sheer audacity of it should surprise me, but this is hardly the first nor last thread where a majority of the fan base has lost a grip on reality.

You could have McDavid in Toronto, and he still could not be good enough for you to be happy.

For the last time, 11 million should give you more than >1.0 ppg. Tavares hasn’t lived up to his contract since his first year here Minimum requirement should be 1.1ppg but Tavares just isn’t that good. I’m just hoping he can give 1-2 more years of top 6 play

The funny thing is that as soon as Tavares is away from Marner, he's actually started to produce. Honestly though, Tavares deserves a little bit of a break, having to come back from a freak injury from last season; I suspect Tavares will start proving his worth soon enough.

Dubas signed him long term with a full no movement clause.

Best to just enjoy the fruits of our GM’s work.

He's not going anywhere. He has a NMC and a young family now. We're stuck with the 40 million crew until Dubas is gone, for better or worse.
John Tavares loves living in Toronto so he won’t do a Patrick Marleau for his cash strapped hometown Leafs. Either trade Nylander or Marner.

The real core 4 in my opinion is: Matthews, Nylander, Rielly, and Campbell. I think Campbell is legit and is going to put up a huge season for us. The cat will be out of the bag so to speak. But Campbell is the kind of guy that will probably still sign with Toronto under market value. He's a rare breed.

Marner still has huge trade value and we would be wise to move on from him. Not so much because his value will start to go down, but just because he's not a winner and has high value.

Tavares we would have to pay to get rid of. And pay a lot.
How does a nonwinner have high value?

Please trade Rielly before the trade deadline to get something, anything.

Does anyone else remember Tavares being dead on the ice last year? He didn’t exactly have the greatest opportunity to help us in playoffs. Seems a little unfair to run him out of town because we didn’t go deep in playoffs lol but these boards are more toxic than ever so what else would you expect..

Anyone remember the gruesome injury he had in the playoffs?

Might take more than a couple of games to get feeling right on the ice again.

Lots of really clueless and heartless posters in here.

He actually hinted he could return for the playoffs.

But then game 7 happened

All fanbases are the same. I'm sure Edmonton fans conveniently forgot but in one of their postgame threads many criticized McDavid for their poor playoff performance.

Tavares's declining play has been happening since 2019. His ability to control the puck and drive a line's offense has fallen consistently.

Tavares is playing heartless on the ice, along with Marner and Matthews. Stop kissing his ass and accept he has been a major reason the offense hasn't produced. Captain bears the most responsibility on the team. He needs to start leading by example instead of going through the motions with the same moves that don't/aren't working. No change-up to his game whatsoever, after 7 games where he has been reduced to a down year Tyler Bozak level contributions.

He needs to wake up quickly. He got clearance from the head injury to play and is playing after being deemed fit. The injury does not impact his play, otherwise, if there were lingering effects of the concussion/head injury he suffered, he wouldn't be cleared to play. There is no justification for his terrible play except for him looking in the mirror and accepting he hasn't been good enough

Nylander isn't the playmaker Marner is. We need to squeeze out every last bit of JT that we can before he becomes a huge anchor down the line. I say keep Marner and JT together and pray JT can be a 20-25 Goal guy going forward because as of right now, he really looks done. Looks likes a serviceable 3C rather than a good 2C

NMC.

Same old, same old problems in Leafs land. They've always tried to buy a team versus build one.

Another example of this is the ill-advised Tavares signing. An $11m/year free agent signing for a forward is not what the team needed at the time. And, the big $ signing was a signal to our young stud ELCs for their own contract demands. And predictably, $40 m tied up in 4 forwards has made it very difficult to add depth to other positions to build a strong team.

Even when the MLSE board decides to go with a different approach around 2014 when Shanny becomes president, and then has the good fortune of drafting Matthews in the 2016 draft, the #1 overall pick (before the draft rules changes that made this even tougher to do), we still manage to blow it. We started to trade away draft picks as soon as we had some success (2017 playoffs versus the Capitals). Talk about counting your chickens before they hatch.

Pyjama-boy is most likely a Leaf until he retires.

Lots of people like to make excuses and have been consistently wrong as well. ;)

There's a real stigma associated with 50% of the cap going to four players.[/quotew]

Who gives a rat's ass about stigma?

Will be glad when that's no longer the case.

Thoughts?

Marner needs to go long before Tavares.

I'd also argue that Matthews isn't likely to re-sign when he is eligible to be a UFA so he should be dealt for a king's ransom while it is still possible.
