Last year for Tavares if we don't go deep in the playoffs?

It won't be Leafs captain with a full NMC contract that will be the odd man out if things go south this season. IMO

There are a lot of reasons one could present that would suggest change will come elsewhere.

If Dubas is still around and changes are made this off-season it will be Reilly walking for nothing in UFA and possibly a Nylander trade as he is the easiest trade to make and has actually performed at his contract value.

Tavares will remain a Leaf and I am ok with it......I think he will be a 30-35 goal, 80ish points C for a couple more years. I don't see his game dropping of like crazy as he has always been a below average skater in NHL terms and finds a way to produce based on his "power forward" style. I know he is not a traditional power forward but the game has soften so much that he is that type in the current NHL.

Had a dream last night the Leafs won the cup and Tavares scored the game winning goal in a 1-0 game. For some reason I was really busy in the dream and couldn’t remember all the highlights and kept telling myself I’d watch them 50x over when I was done with whatever I was doing. Then I woke up and was disappointed that I didn’t watch the highlights in my dream lol.

Anyway, we’re stuck with Jason Allison but hopefully im Nostradamus and the dream becomes reality.

He was on a 73 point pace last year.

Points aren't acquired evenly throughout the season, so it is unlikely he ends up with 41 points this year.

Of course signed as UFA when the Cap was continuously increasing he got a homerun.

Some warned about counting chickens while there were only eggs, but you know how people like to be in debt ...

marner is the likely candidate if it comes to moving someone for space. Nylander's deal doesn't move enough cap to make a difference.

Moving Nylander would make a difference for sure. It would weaken the team. Back after his holdout, I wanted to trade Willy for either Parayko or prospect Makar. I was never onboard with Pesce, that was awful even then. I wouldn't do Parayko anymore, your loss St Louis, still good with the Makar deal. :D

Tavares has management by the balls with his NMC, as much as some people want him and his contract gone, it's not going to happen. He is retiring here. Also if we're not able to get it done and Marner is a no show again for like the 5th year in a row in the playoffs, he should be the one who is gone, not Tavares. Paying a winger 11M to not show up in the playoffs is what's screwing us. Matthews had the wrist injury, JT was out, Nylander was phenomenal, Marner looked like the worst player on the ice last post-season, not named Thornton.

In a cash strapped league his 11m cap hit and 7.95m in actual salary starting next year and for two more years after that might be tempting for some teams. Of course he would have to waive his NMC - which he might or might not.

I'd love to see him shipped out for the right package of help now and in the future. There's a real stigma associated with 50% of the cap going to four players. Will be glad when that's no longer the case.

Thoughts?
He is not going anywhere man. Da plan is when he can't play centre anymore he will switch to a power left game. He owns many many real estate properties in city. His wife lives and works here. He bought da Marlies org which he is actively involved with. They just settled into a beautiful place in High Park. I hear next kid maybe on da way.

32 team league. There is no supply of quality players waiting for us to use the cap room on. 90% odds we will have to fill it up with overpaid depth players or pay a no.4 D like a no.2/no.3

It's the sad reality of the NHL and why I don't get involved in cap fights here. Player dilution. Casual fans change the channel if your 2-4 lines play too much. You need to catch the depth player BEFORE they breakout. We will always have cap room for that. If you're signing them post-breakout you already lost.

Tavares stays. Look at it this way. If we get eliminated, this means we're still some pieces away. If we then lose Tavares....we're even more pieces away now.

The real core 4 in my opinion is: Matthews, Nylander, Rielly, and Campbell. I think Campbell is legit and is going to put up a huge season for us. The cat will be out of the bag so to speak. But Campbell is the kind of guy that will probably still sign with Toronto under market value. He's a rare breed.

Marner still has huge trade value and we would be wise to move on from him. Not so much because his value will start to go down, but just because he's not a winner and has high value.

Tavares we would have to pay to get rid of. And pay a lot.

It's an interesting idea.

Especially since trading him after July 1 would mean the team getting him only has to pay $16.8m over 3yrs - $5.6m per year - in real money.

Let's see what happens this year first though.

Can we trade a player to a team to take 50% cap retention and trade it right back to us?

Now that Willy is living up to his contract unless Marner can take the next step like Willy has, Marner makes the most sense to be moved on down the road.

This guy has put up 200 points in 205 games, costed zero assets to acquire and is here for 3 more years.

Yet you guys act like he's a broken leper with a gambling addiction that you can't wait to be rid of.

The sheer audacity of it should surprise me, but this is hardly the first nor last thread where a majority of the fan base has lost a grip on reality.

You could have McDavid in Toronto, and he still could not be good enough for you to be happy.

Tavares isn’t going anywhere. He’s riding the contract out with us. It’s Marner who might playing his last year with the leafs if things go wrong.
