Last year for Tavares if we don't go deep in the playoffs?

Why would he want to waive? He is playing hockey in his hometown, is the captain, received his retirement contract, and has roots and family all established here.

I would be shocked if he accepted a trade.

NMC.

Same old, same old problems in Leafs land. They've always tried to buy a team versus build one.

Another example of this is the ill-advised Tavares signing. An $11m/year free agent signing for a forward is not what the team needed at the time. And, the big $ signing was a signal to our young stud ELCs for their own contract demands. And predictably, $40 m tied up in 4 forwards has made it very difficult to add depth to other positions to build a strong team.

Even when the MLSE board decides to go with a different approach around 2014 when Shanny becomes president, and then has the good fortune of drafting Matthews in the 2016 draft, the #1 overall pick (before the draft rules changes that made this even tougher to do), we still manage to blow it. We started to trade away draft picks as soon as we had some success (2017 playoffs versus the Capitals). Talk about counting your chickens before they hatch.

Pyjama-boy is most likely a Leaf until he retires.
Said exactly this before he was signed and now here we are I hate to say a toad to sew but fna a toad to sew .

Exactly there is zero chance he waives to go to any team that can take on his cap hit

Even if he were open to a move (he won't be), and even if the Leafs are content with the optics of trading their captain after successive years of failure...

....who would even want him? He'll be 32 next year, is already slowing down, and does not provide value for that cap hit.

He has the 6th highest cap hit in the league, but isn't a top 20 center in the league.

You can't move him, even if you wanted to.

Rememer Sundin

5.6 million in real money over the last 3 years starting July 1 is not just fair value its + + value for a salary strapped team who could use a #1 C.

Close thread. Pointless discussion.

Why?

If the leafs are abysmal or even just outside the playoffs this year it would be in John's best interest to consider leaving especially if he wants to win a cup. So unless he was blatantly lieing about wanting to win a cup he would have to consider it if things get that bad this year. Not to mention a few leaked articles to the Toronto Sun, Star, TSN, Sportsnet and leaf fans turning on you i.e Marner it can really put the pressure on someone to leave and waive a NMC. Leaf fans can make your life a living hell. In fact, I would expect this to happen if they replace Dubas with a GM with an A type personality. Nothing against John personally but he's only been worth the money in 1 year so far.

Oh sorry, I wasn't aware he stole a NMC that isn't valid. It doesn't matter what you think he earned or not. He has a NMC and has no requirement to waive it.
That wasn't what you said , you said he earned it in a comparison with Sundin , Sundin earned his by playing for us . JT was given his as a contract demand based on his play with another team .I didn't say he had any requirement to waive it I said he didn't earn it from us . Maybe try a little lotion for the chafing .

OK well. The conversation is about JT being traded. Someone else brought up Sundin, not myself.

I am purely talking from a "trading JT" scenario. In my mind it doesn't matter how or why he received the NMC. He has it, and I cannot imagine he waives it.

He earned it based on his play in the NHL. But yea, I will go use that lotion now.

We are stuck with JT. The only other solution is to buy him out in a couple years. If we buy him out after next season (2 years remaining on contract) the buyout would be 3.6 million for 4 years. But whether we can get someone who is better than him for 7.4 million will depend on how much his play regresses over the next two seasons.

How would you even move JT? Assuming you could convince him to go, where would you send him?

$11M in cap is not easy to move, significant retention would be awful, and he's still producing (well, not this year, but we're 7 games in).

Nylander isn't the playmaker Marner is. We need to squeeze out every last bit of JT that we can before he becomes a huge anchor down the line. I say keep Marner and JT together and pray JT can be a 20-25 Goal guy going forward because as of right now, he really looks done. Looks likes a serviceable 3C rather than a good 2C
I think the difference is that Nylander covers up for his poor defensive play better than Marner. Mitch is equally valuable on either line, but Willie more so with Tavares.

Unless your purpose is just to bolster Tavares' value, I don't see the point. If we could trade him, that might make sense, but we can't.

Teams were only willing to overpay him and give him a high caphit hoping they could win within first half of his contract before he slows down.

We’re halfway through his contract and he’s slowing down. Nobody wants that cap hit.

His play with another is now he earned it from Dubas.

In a cash strapped league his 11m cap hit and 7.95m in actual salary starting next year and for two more years after that might be tempting for some teams. Of course he would have to waive his NMC - which he might or might not.

I'd love to see him shipped out for the right package of help now and in the future. There's a real stigma associated with 50% of the cap going to four players. Will be glad when that's no longer the case.

Thoughts?

He has a NMC in his contract, this right here is a pipe dream friend, not to mention the amount of retention we would have to include wouldn't help us much at all really...

Anyone remember the gruesome injury he had in the playoffs?

Might take more than a couple of games to get feeling right on the ice again.

Lots of really clueless and heartless posters in here.
I remember. He probably doesn’t.

Clueless and heartless? So he hasn’t been trending in the wrong direction and skating in wet cement for well over a year? What does your heart have to do with a business decision?

Ironic you mock people for posting thoughts and opinions instead of facts, but now you’re suggesting hanging on to a rapidly depreciating asset because of emotion?
