So what's the gameplan for getting a top 4d? Everything has gone quiet and a few defenseman have already been moved.

It would be a shame to make all these upgrades and stop one move short by going into the season with that defense.
But you also don’t want to overpay, there are offers out there, just the price is still high on a couple.

Yeah, I did the math and It would be extremely difficult. You would have to do a two year bridge for Stützle I think, move both Formenton and Joseph, and probably use Sogaard as the back-up. Even then it’ll be tight.

Might be more realistic to look for an expiring UFA as a stop gap than anyone with term.
Won’t be easy, but possible Zaitsev’s contract needs to move.
Could afford Klingberg for 1 or 2 years max, but that’s it.

I kinda want to grab Andersson or Kylington from Calgary due to their cap crunch, but if they end up trading M.Tkachuk(or Mangiapane) they likely get themselves out of it.

I've said it once, I'll say it again.

I would give up 2023 top 10 protected, Greig and another piece for Andersson.

Guy would be absolutely terrific in our top 4, holy shit. He'll be considered a top 5 D a few times in his career. A D core of Chabot-Sanderson-Andersson would be insane.

Everyone knows how insanely high I have been on Greig (calling him Marchand-lite for a few seasons now), so this is telling of my opinions on Andersson.

Realistically we should be going full throttle after Adam Larsson.

Tbh a protected 1st and Greig is a fair ask for a good young top 4 D. Getting Debrincat this year means we already have 5 (hopefully) long term top 6 forwards, so giving up Greig isn't the end of the world.

Hamonic Zaitsev and Talbot off the books. Replace by JBD, Thomson and Sogaard..
Watson replaced by Greig or another ELC.
I have Gambrell (like) contract extended to 23/34 to make up 13 forwards.
I have Holden extending 1 more year or equivalent cheap D.
If we can get a D for the 4.5 cap space taken by Zaitsev .. We likely need to move someone like Joseph to make it work next year depending how close we want to be the the cap.

I'd love Andersson, not sure Calgary can afford to move him though (regardless of if they keep Tkachuk). Andersson is a top pairing young defender that can help in a rebuild/retool/contention. Flames might want an overpay, but hey if we can snag him without giving up too much, that'd be dope!

Seeing what NJD gave up for Marino, I wonder if Brannstrom and a draft pick would have been enough for Pittsburgh.

Jersey is looking good now. They can afford to move Severson and will have more then enough to sign Bratt, Boqvist, Vanecek and Wood

Brannstrom + 2nd would have been comparable.

We really missed the boat on Marino. Good 2nd pairing defensive defenseman that went for pretty cheap.

Being signed long-term on a reasonable salary as the reason we passed on him is shockingly stupid, even for Dorion.

If we grabbed Marino, you also have to say goodbye to Zub next season (or DeBrincat in 2024.)

I've done the math, that extra 3M for Marino is an absolute backbreaker in 2024. You could obviously deal Marino in 2024, but, any assets you "save" by getting Marino now while everyone is in cap hell, might have to be paid back when you have to dump him in your cap crunch.

I don't think a 27YR old top 4 defenseman is going to be difficult to move on a 4.4M cap hit in two years.

We didn’t pass on him, Pit preferred Smith over Branny.

Unless Dorion manages to move Zaitsev, gives the organization more flexibility to have a player with term and cap hits like Marino in addition to keeping Zub

Most things the team does are shockingly stupid in your eyes Hale.

This morning I was reading a main board thread ranking the Atlantic teams. You had Boston ranked first in the Atlantic. You might have been the only guy in the entire thread that ranked Boston first, many (if not most rankings) had them missing the playoffs.

Personally I don't have much interest in paying a defensive defenceman the 4.4 on Marino's contact. Let alone for 5 years, 3 of which have an NTC clause.

I don't think they missed the boat. I think they're more comfortable with existing assets and contracts than what they'd be post a Marino acquisition. I think they're probably more comfortable seeing the chess pieces line up and thinking we can grow a prospect into that role for less AAV.

4.4 AAV is 71st among defenceman. That's high end anchor a 2nd pair money. Pittsburgh is a team with cap issues and they moved him out. We're a team that's likely to run into cap issues. I don't think we missed the boat, I think we kicked the tires, didn't like the deal parameters and moved along.

Yep, Like yours on, we missed the boat.

It was reported we were interested, so the 2 sides couldn’t agree it looks like.

It was reported by Garrioch we were afraid of his term.

Terrible reason to pass on a mid-20s 2nd pairing RD that is a bargain in terms of assets to acquire and salary over the next couple years.

I think one issue may have been Marino having higher salary over his caphit after this season, even if we move Zaitsev, that extra salary might be a deterrence (which I hope changes asap)
