If they don't get a top 4 RD this yr it wouldn't surprise me if they turn around & trade Debrincat for one before the end of the season rather than pay him $9 mil or whatever crazy amount he will be due him after his contract expires.

They’re paying him $9M this season.

They’ll probably sign or trade for a fringe top 4 guy at this point -everything I read leads me to believe Weegar and Chychrun prices are sky high.
Something seems to be holding up the trade for Chychrun and the signing of Klingberg. I suspect teams may be trying to make trades to open up roster, salary and cap space. I would rather we sign Klingberg to a 3 year deal, as was rumoured by one pundit, than spend high quality assets and picks to get Chychrun. A team is likely going to make a decision in the next few days which should start the process.

Everything I read led me to believe the prices for DeBrincat and Fiala were going to be sky high, turns out they were very modest. I think the reason Chychrun and Weegar haven't moved yet has a bit to do with Arz and Fla not being willing to accept how bad the market is for sellers right now.

I'd buy it with Arizona, but with Florida I've heard they're no longer as keen to move Weegar. Might just be a case of "we don't HAVE to move him, so we can wait for a higher price."

I mean, every team does that. Dorion said he was fine starting the year with 3 goalies before moving two of them.

Yeah, and it definitely needs to be taken with a grain of salt. But I think there's a grain of truth in there, too — look at that depth chart. Are they really in a rush to make room for Marc Staal? Is Matt Kiersted or Calle Sjalin knocking down the door? It wouldn't surprise me one iota to see the Panthers hold Weegar until the deadline, assuming they can't get him re-signed.

Sens are at roughly a 71 million Cap

Add 6 for these 3 RFAs
Formenton 2
Joseph 3
Brannstrom 1

78 Million going into this year with out making any more changes and we are not yet at 22 or 23 NHL contracts

22/23 is manageable
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2023/24
Getting rid of Zaitsev will be a priority at some point subtract 4.5 million
RD Hamonic 3 and LD/RD Holden 1.5 come off the books but need to be replaced
Talbot comes off the books...needs a replacement or a contract
Watson comes off the books needs a replacement
Zub needs a new deal
Pinto needs a new deal
Stutzle needs a new deal
DeBrincat needs a new deal
JBD needs a new deal

Maybe someone with a calculator can let us know how we are going to improve our D and get all these guys under contract under a 83.5 Cap. Not that much savings of guys coming off the books .. when we need to replace them.
Stutzle and DeBrincat are 8 million players. .. DeBrincat could be at 9 if we just qualify him.

Even moving both Formenton and Joseph wont get it done . Is there a capologist in the house?

what if we get both Chychrun AND Klingberg?l? That probably puts us right up against the cap but if we did that for 1-2 years, I think we’d be favorites to come out of the east

Don’t forgot we have 5mil in dead cap that’s gone in two seasons

Replacing Zaitsev with a dman under 5 mil is doable

"Dorion absolutely still needs to find that top-4 defenseman. Shoring up our offense in such a big way and leaving the back end with a big hole in it is such a waste."

Pretty sure we're allowed to discuss the possibility that Dorion won't be able to snag one of the few remaining top-4 Ds on the market, guy. That is unless you're the time traveller here and you know getting one is a guarantee.
I thought it over and I don't need to be a time traveller to see you as the drama queen you are.

You'll never admit it but I'm pretty sure that if Dorion had happened to improve the defence first, you would have complained that Dorion would be incompetent for not taken care the offence.

Do not go gentle into that good night

We’re paying him 9 million this upcoming season as well.
Players do sign below their QO offers, I think Boeser was the latest, or one of the nucks.

So what's the gameplan for getting a top 4d? Everything has gone quiet and a few defenseman have already been moved.

It would be a shame to make all these upgrades and stop one move short by going into the season with that defense.

Yeah, I did the math and It would be extremely difficult. You would have to do a two year bridge for Stützle I think, move both Formenton and Joseph, and probably use Sogaard as the back-up. Even then it’ll be tight.

Might be more realistic to look for an expiring UFA as a stop gap than anyone with term.

Small but with a high salary.

If Debrincat meshes with our top players and produces 40+ goals, a high salary of $8M+ AAV would be warranted & hopefully affordable.
Maybe he’ll like it here so much that he takes a “Johnny Hockey contract”… probably not though.

It is not the end of the world if Dorion doesn't get a top 4 dman.

In my eyes, next seasons goal should just be in the playoff race by the end of the season. If they miss by just a couple of points, then that is ok.

I really don't think people should call them cup contenders yet (yes, i have seen some people saying that). That is just setting you up for disappointment.
