It was reported by Garrioch we were afraid of his term.

Terrible reason to pass on a mid-20s 2nd pairing RD that is a bargain in terms of assets to acquire and salary over the next couple years.
No cap room later, we need a defender on a 1 or 2 year deal.

Edmonton has a bit of a cap crunch too.

Conflicted as to whether we should make a move for Barrie. Probably would be cheap.

Sens are at roughly a 71 million Cap

Add 6 for these 3 RFAs
Formenton 2
Joseph 3
Brannstrom 1

78 Million going into this year with out making any more changes and we are not yet at 22 or 23 NHL contracts

22/23 is manageable
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2023/24
Getting rid of Zaitsev will be a priority at some point subtract 4.5 million
RD Hamonic 3 and LD/RD Holden 1.5 come off the books but need to be replaced
Talbot comes off the books...needs a replacement or a contract
Watson comes off the books needs a replacement
Zub needs a new deal
Pinto needs a new deal
Stutzle needs a new deal
DeBrincat needs a new deal
JBD needs a new deal

Maybe someone with a calculator can let us know how we are going to improve our D and get all these guys under contract under a 83.5 Cap. Not that much savings of guys coming off the books .. when we need to replace them.
Stutzle and DeBrincat are 8 million players. .. DeBrincat could be at 9 if we just qualify him.

Even moving both Formenton and Joseph wont get it done . Is there a capologist in the house?
Which is why when you look at this roster it could cost a player like DeBrincat to free up enough cash to add a good top 4 D & have a little breathing space in cap room in a yr's time. Or they go with what they have in-house & hope for the best.

I really hope Dorion doesn't acquire Holl as short term help. Engvall signing puts Leafs in cap hell and they need to move someone like Holl or Kerfoot. I'd rather not help them with this situation. Plus, Holl isn't good enough to address our defensive issues.

One player I'd love to acquire, but not sure if he'd be available is Tanev. He's an excellent shut down defender. He's not always healthy, but he only has two years left on his deal and the games he doesn't play, we can give Thomson or JBD a chance to play bigger minutes.

Why make the big spash for Debrincat and lure in Giroux as a result just to move Debrincat.
They can probably fit one D in the 4.5-5 range in I did some crunching in another post past the one you replied to.

Not using Bridge contracts now early does make it tight though and it will mean relying on more ELCs / cheap deals lower in the lineup and on D. Bridge contracts would cost more in the long run but they can get you over a hump until the dead cap gives us some relief.

Resign Zub is a priority for sure. Move Zaitsev is as well to free up some cap to add a D. We probably lose a forward along with that to get it done though.

Next year Greig and Kastelic will be regulars if not sooner. One or both JBD and Thomson should be ready as well.

If Kerfoot were the "fututre considerations", I think it'd be a no brainer at his low 750k salary this year, but I wouldn't want to give up anything of value.

what if we get both Chychrun AND Klingberg?l? That probably puts us right up against the cap but if we did that for 1-2 years, I think we’d be favorites to come out of the east

I seriously doubt we get two when getting one is a dream.

If we were afraid of his term, then we wouldn't have been interested at all anyway, it's not like they didn't know his contract before showing interest.

It's seemingly the most likely that Pittsburgh preferred a different package.

Maybe he’ll like it here so much that he takes a “Johnny Hockey contract”… probably not though.
I think Debrincat will want market value.

I suppose there is a small chance that some VG players would take $8M AAV or less to come here IF they see other top caliber players taking lower salaries to create a SC contender.

Leafs now are over the cap after signing Engvall

Have to think Holl will be on the move
Probably, or Kerfoot,
Hioll is a third pairing , and we have lots of those.

Yep and some think he’ll like the team and slot in , like others with an 8 in front of the number.
None of us know, but we’ll find out. If team plays well, good chance,
