Figured this deserved it's own thread.

Wonder if they take an early look at Kostin or if they let him settle in in the AHL.

It’s a good gamble because, like Jesse, there’s untapped potential in Kostin. And Sammy wasn’t ahead of guys like Neimalainen or Broberg in the system nor was he ahead of Ryan Murray. We love our prospects but they all can’t play for us unfortunately! 🤷🏻‍♂️

And a giant mediocre AHL d doesn’t move the needle either. It’s a change of scenery trade for two prospects who aren’t succeeding
True. I often let bias (passionate homerism) decide if I like trades.

I.e. the Reinhardt trade. I thought at the time that an Oil Kings captain and solid D was an awesome trade. Ooooooooh how I was wrong lol

One is a forward who should be succeeding by now. The other is a D, who by nature of the position still hasn’t shown us what he can be.

Some thoughts on Kostin:

Has all the tools to be a very good bottom 6 winger but has struggled to put it together consistently and has been passed by a couple guys on the Blues depth chart. He is a left shooting winger...KLIM KOSTIN IS NOT A CENTER.

Has good top end speed but not great agility. Gets his shot of quickly and can surprise goalies but not a sniper by any means. Hits a lot and can be physical on the forecheck but doesn't seem to cause a lot of turnovers leading to possesion in the ozone or protect the puck well enough. Will occasionally drop the gloves and when he does drop them Kostin is a very good fighter. His hockey IQ and consistent motor/drive have been questioned by many.

Kostin needed a change of scenery badly, hope he does well for you guys in Edmonton. I think he can be a decent bottom 6 wing option, but he is quickly running out of NHL chances.

All in all, seems like a good trade for both sides.
Thanks for the info.

Did he play RW at all?

What is your opinion? A random giant low scoring AHL forward doesn’t move the needle. Might as well keep a depth D
We have plenty of depth D (once again I'm pointing this out to you). We need a low cost, tough 4th liner that has shown some skill (like Kostin). I'm hoping this will work out for both, but this fills a need for us.

I had hopes for samorukov. Liked him for the storm and thought he only got better.

Except these past 2 years. I think he supposedly stayed in Edmonton all summer to train but didn't seem to get much better in camp.

Kostin maybe a bit of size and toughness on a small contract I guess.

Thanks for posting up. With the way the Oilers drop McD or Drai down for bottomsix shifts to get things kickstarted there at times the bolded is interesting. Because Kostin here wouldn't have to be agile with puck. He'd just need to get shots off and the quicker the better. Players here get great feeds staring at wide open nets. Often times we're looking for someone that can even get open or take a one timer or not dust puck off all the time. If he can do something like that its value added here. Also with him being slotted likely to Benson, maybe even seeing some of Holloway or RNH he'll be getting some passes.

When did Eichel have a better start to his career? McDavid scored his first goal in his 4th game and didn’t look back until Manning cheap shitted him and then he missed 36 games only to come back and score at 1.3 ppg till the end of the year.
That's my point.

Add in that McDavid plays best with big, physical north-south wingers and this makes even more sense.

Is this guy tough?

Yes, as a teenager there’s clips of him dummying some AHL goons. He is definitely a physical hockey player.

I don't get this trade. Kostin will never amount to anything, and Samorukov might still end up a bottom-pairing guy. What is the upside of this trade for us? Makes no sense.
I don't know. He's only 23, got drafted in the late 1st round, one year after J-Poo. Good size, 40+ games in the NHL. Could be a decent 4th liner at least who can chip in some offense. One could do worse.

I’m sure Brad Holland had a say in this, and I generally like his decision making process.

6’4 forward with toughness and bit of a skill. We need that in the bottom 6 depth.

This move tweener for tweener actually makes a lot of sense for both organizations. I liked Kostin in his draft year, power forwards take time to develop.

We still have Broberg, Niemelainen, Desharnais, Kesselring, Kemp, etc. in the pipeline.
Makes sense. We gave Virtanen a PTO hoping he would bring a little toughness. He was almost invisible so we traded a extra LD for something we need now.

Agreed. Samorukov seems to have been derailed a bit by injuries. Not sure if/when he will get 100% back on track. We have D depth. The guys that you've mentioned + Wanner and Munzenberger following behind them. I have been pining for someone to provide a physical edge and able and willing to drop the gloves so that Nurse and Kane don't feel obligated to take on plugs. IMO we got that in Kostin. I'm not expecting a lot from him, but something tells me that he will really work well with Benson.

As others have said, big bodied forwards usually take some time. Clearly Holland and Woodcroft see the role as needing to be filled which is why we brought in Virtanen for a test drive. Kostin brings legitimate toughness to face the non elite heavyweights and some scoring ability.
Is this guy tough?
Look on the first page for his fight with Mayfield who is legit tough and on youtube for some AHL scraps. He's not Lucic, Johnston, MacDermid or Reaves tough, but he should be able to hold his own against lower to middle tier tough guys.

He whups some ass here.

I didn't know much about Kostin but if he can regularly play on the 4th line and be effective I don't hate the trade. The bottom 6 needs more muscle and it became clear in the pre season that Samurokov didn't have much of a chance to surpass Broberg and Neimo on the D chart imo.

I doubt that we gave up Samorukov for nothing. Kostin is around the same age, makes league minimum (this really helps our cap situation) and is big and can play physical. This is the player and role that we were hoping that Virtanen would fill. He will get a shot on our 4th line, I'm pretty sure of it.
Someone was saying he is tough. Last time I checked we r lacking in that department
