I kept refreshing to see if someone else created a thread and then we post at the exact same time.

I'm sad to see Samorukov go but I think his development had noticeably stalled and he's been crowded out at his position. Kostin seems to have the potential to fill an area of greater need for the Oilers.

I don't get this trade. Kostin will never amount to anything, and Samorukov might still end up a bottom-pairing guy. What is the upside of this trade for us? Makes no sense.

I don't think Kostin is very good. Tyler Benson is more productive than Kostin at the AHL level so i don't see what Kostin brings to the table except that he's 6'4.

A guy that makes league minimum that brings physicality and size to our bottom 6. Samorukov was behind Broberg and Niemelainen on the depth chart.

I put it in the main thread but Kostin is very much a has tools no toolbox type. He can bang, he can fight, and he has a decent shot. If he can put it all together he’d be very nice….but it’s a big if at this point. He should’ve been perfect in a Berube system but the drive didn’t always seem to be there.

I hope he pans out for you guys, I was always a fan and hoped it worked out.

Huh? How do you know he’ll never amount to anything? It was a need for need trade where both teams had a surplus of the player they gave up

Both once hyped prospects who have kind of went no where. I think Samorukov has higher potential still but it’s a whatever trade.

Have to say I probably prefer the Russian who plays D and came over to North America as a junior age to develop his game. Unfortunately with two young LD ahead of him on a mature phase organization trying to win deep, Samorukov is locked out.

This shifts some organization depth to forward. Not sure the Oil gain much in this deal.

Our pro scouting for the most part has been pretty good the last few seasons so I'm going to accept that we know what were doing (wow, that's weird to say as an Oilers fan) and be cautiously optimistic.

More the latter. Again, if he put in the effort I’m sure he’d be fine, but that drive is usually few and far between

Who cares what he produced in the AHL. They are hardly trading based on ability to score in the AHL

Kostin can play oh and he’s tough. A lot more suited for bottom 6 than a player like Benson.
